Organic?

0

One year ago I would have never thought I would be doing the things I do – making things, baking things, using cloth diapers … and now?  Organic!  I’ve become absolutely obsessed with organic foods.

It all started when my husband decided he was going to not eat any more high fructose corn syrup because of a youtube video.  I rolled my eyes every time when he started looking at looking at all of the nutrition labels on all of our food and I really didn’t want to know whether our foods contained bad things or not.  It’s a little ironic because I majored in Exercise Sciences (learning about the body, nutrition, exercise, etc.) and I took a few nutrition classes (when I wanted to be a Dietician).  I know about some of these bad things we put into our body … but it all tastes so good so I just ignored it all.

Then my husband brought up a really good point – maybe children aren’t becoming more obese because they’re eating more.  Maybe it’s the simple fact that food companies have created all of these things like hydrogenated oil and high fructose corn syrup that didn’t exist 100 years ago.  And that bothered me.  I looked at my little 11-month old and didn’t want to expose her to all of these chemicals and engineered foods so I started looking at organic foods.  And boy are they expensive!

However, we have been able to find some great deals on organic foods and they taste so amazing.  They taste more like home made foods which I enjoy so much.  The flavor is so much better and I feel so much better about the nutrients I’m putting into my body.  The fruits and vegetables have less toxins.  I even understand most of the ingredients on boxes.  Plus I’m supporting some family farms.  And I like that.

Another way I plan to support some farm owners is to attend Farmer’s Markets.  The main one in Utah County seems to be in Provo at Pioneer Park at 500 W. Center Street, right off of the freeway.  It runs Saturdays, June – October, 8 am – 1 pm.

Other Farmers Markets:

  • Happy Valley Farmers Market:  Saturdays, July – October, 9 am – 2 pm, Riverwoods
  • Lindon Farmers Market:  Saturdays, July – October, 8 am – 10 am, 60 N. State St., Lindon

  • The Pleasant Grove Promenade:  Fridays, July – September, 4 pm – 8 pm, 70 S. 100 E., Pleasant Grove
  • Hee Haw Farms Farmers Market:  Saturdays, August, 9 am – 3 pm, 150 S. 2000 W., Pleasant Grove
  • Lehi Farmers Market:  Saturdays, August – September, 10 am – 1 pm, 1870 N. State St., Lehi
  • Thanksgiving Point Farmers Market:  Saturdays, August – October, 9 am – 12 pm, 3003 N. Thanksgiving Way, The Village, Lehi

Macey’s Kid’s Karnival

0

There is going to be a celebration, a Kid’s Karnival, at Macey’s this Saturday.  The time varies depending on location.  There will be free activities such as bounce houses, face painting, and more.  And the best part is that hot dogs will be $0.25, corn dogs will be 2/$1.00, and Kong Cones will be $0.99!

In case you’ve never had a Kong Cone before, these things are absolutely massive! Normally they fill up a huge styrofoam cup and put a cone on top.  I think their price is usually about $1.79 which is already a steal but I’m definitely not about to pass up a $0.99 ice cream!

Spotlight: The Shred Shack

1

Other than the amazing weather, a 45-minute drive from one side of the island to the other, and the amazing water and beaches, there is nothing I miss more about Hawaii than eating Hawaiian Ice … at least once a day.  Hawaiian Ice is different from just the normal shaved ice.  Ice cream on the bottom of all the flavored ice is absolutely amazing. And the Shred Shack offers just a little taste of what I miss of Hawaii – Hawaiian Ice.

The Shred Shack is located at the mouth of Provo Canyon, right next to the Texaco at about 1500 E 800 N, Orem.  It’s a little shack with some outdoor chairs and tables in front of it.  They offer quite a few variety of flavors and you can mix and match how you’d like.

Prices:  $2 for a small, $3 for a medium, $4 for a large, $0.50 for ice cream.

Family Night: Provo Beach Resort

1

Provo Beach Resort (PBR) is a new fun center place with a different activities than the normal “fun center.”  PBR has arcade games, but it also has a flowrider to simulate surfing, a golf simulator, croquet, play areas, a carousel, a “lazer frenzy” game (players must navigate their way while avoiding lasers spanning the room), mini-bowling, and many other activities.  It also has a little eating area – food from other restaurants in the Riverwoods is also allowed to be brought in to eat there.

We went to PBR one night after enjoying a yummy meal at Tucanos and walked around for a while.  My husband also tried that golf simulator.  For everything there, cards are available for purchase and those cards can get you into any game and you can also add more money onto the card.

Pricing is a bit high but there are a few things that are quite unique for this area, so I think it’s worth the price.

Provo Beach Resort is located at 4801 North University Avenue #210 in Provo
Open Mon-Thur 11am-10pm | Fri 11am-11pm | Sat 10am-11pm

DLM: From Part-time to Full-time

0

As a new soon-to-be mother and then a new mother but still working part-time, I wondered what full-time stay-at-home moms did all day.  I couldn’t even imagine having so much time to just spend with kids and was fascinated with how much they could accomplish in one day.  One friend said she got to do scrapbooking, cleaning, and making food … none of which I really had time for unless I woke up at 6:30 am and stayed up until about midnight.

It has been about a month and a half since I quit my job and worked my last day and being a full-time stay-at-home mom is a lot different than I was expecting.  I’m surprised that some days I am bored out of my mind.  I cannot find one single thing I want to do while the babe is sleeping so I end up sitting around, watching television shows I’ve missed.  Yet other days, I am so incredibly busy that not everything gets done.

I’ve found that being a full-time mom has its advantages and disadvantages.  I love that I get to dedicate all my time to making food, changing diapers, singing the same songs multiple times a day, giving baths, going on long walks to keep the babe happy, and following the babe around the house all day as she learns and discovers new things.  Yet a huge disadvantage to being home all day is that I am the one to always make food, change diapers, sing the same songs multiple times a day, give baths, go on long walks to keep the babe happy, and follow the babe around the house all day as she learns and discovers new things.  When I worked part-time, I got to take a break from all of that between 20-30 hours a week.

But despite any cons to being a stay-at-home mom, there is nothing in this world I would rather do than devote my life to raising children.  I feel like since I’ve quit my job, my daughter has learned a lot more than she would have if I had kept my job.  She’s learning all sorts of new things, developing her personality, and I wouldn’t want to miss this for anything!

Spotlight: Homemade Gourmet Cookie Dough

1

I am always impressed when I find people who, although they are not in the best circumstance/situation currently, are trying to make a better life for themselves.  I strongly believe that if you work hard enough, you will be blessed for it.

A couple of weeks ago, two kids (who looked like they were in their teens) showed up on our doorstep.  They were selling cookie dough.  First of all, my husband loves a good chocolate chip cookie and second, we love to support those who are making an effort so when they asked us if we wanted to buy any cookie dough, it was an obvious answer … yes!  We made the cookies that night and they were the most delicious cookies we had ever bought from anyone – they were nice and soft just like I like them.  My husband prefers crunchy cookies but was impressed with these, nonetheless.

This family-owned business started when the father lost his job about a year and a half ago.  To make ends meet and help a son on a mission, they started making this cookie dough and selling it.  Money earned continues to go towards the mission and helps them stay self-sufficient.

The dough is made with real eggs and butter and trust me, it tastes like they are straight out of Grandma’s kitchen.

They have a food handler’s permit, and have gone through the Department of Agriculture and the State so everything is legal.  Batches are made at Parley’s Hardware in their commercial kitchen.

Their main product is chocolate chip cookie dough, however, special orders can be taken and they will make a custom batch just for you!

Kawaii Diaper Update

1

Back in January we were so excited about starting our new lives with cloth diapers and Kawaii brand.  I was loving my Kawaii diapers and they never leaked.  But then all of the sudden a couple weeks later, they were leaking like crazy.  And I was so disappointed so I turned to bumGenius diapers for some help because I’ve never had problems with them.

I ordered more bumGenius diapers and read a paper that came with them that talked about cleaning them and it talked about stripping the diapers.  Stripping the diapers!  I don’t know why I didn’t think about that sooner!

Stripping diapers is done to get the diapers back to their original absorbent state.  They were already clean so I put them through the washer six times on hot water.  I never used any detergent (not recommended) but some use vinegar.  Then I dried the diapers and now the diapers work amazingly.  There are no leaks!

So this is something to keep in mind – strip your diapers every month or two to keep buildup away!

Family Night: Bridal Veil Falls

0

We did a little Family Night last night because today my husband only works a half day!  Sounds exciting, but it’s not.

See, we recently moved into this home that has the most hideous lava rock wall that you have ever seen.  I should have taken a picture of it, but I didn’t, so you’ll just have to trust me on this one.  It was ugly.  So Mike invited his friend, Brandon, over on Saturday and they went to work on the wall.  There was hammering and smashing for almost four hours straight.  I thought for sure they would be done on Saturday but unfortunately, there is still about 1/4 of the wall left to finish up.

It looks like it was bad lighting but really it was all the dust that makes this picture look so cloudy and grainy.

So my husband leaves work early today to finish the wall and we’ll be working on the house the rest of the day, hence family night last night.

It was a beautiful day yesterday so we decided the canyon would be the perfect place to go.  Now that we live so close to the mouth of the canyon, the drive up there was no big deal at all.  We arrived at the parking for Bridal Veil and other parks within minutes and were lucky enough to get a close parking space.  It seemed as though everyone was up there!

Bridal Veil Falls is located up Provo Canyon and is a beautiful waterfall with a short, easy hike to reach the falls.  We stayed at the base of the falls where there was a little pond/pool where lots of kids and dogs were splish splashing, cooling off from the warm weather.  Some even took the little light kids’ balls (the ones you can get at stores for a dollar or two) to play with in the water.

One of the times I went there with friends, we hiked up to about the middle of the falls (the path is to the left of the falls), crossed the water, and continued on a little trail heading west of the falls.  It was very unsafe and I would not recommend going on the path but being up higher is a lot of fun and I would recommend it.

But if you’re taking kids, or planning to go in the water yourself, I would suggest taking a change of dry clothes and shoes.  I’ve yet to fall into the water but we watched plenty of people slip on a rock and soak their feet, some fall in completely, and well, as you probably know, kids have a really hard time not jumping into water, especially on a hot day!
