Deals

Over a week ago, my sister-in-law asked if I ever put up deals from sites like Screamin’ Daily Deals, City Deals, etc.  I hadn’t done much in the past because, well, I’m a bit lazy.  But as I thought about it throughout the week, I thought that maybe I should think about this harder.  I hate going through my email to see all of the deals and try to pick and choose which ones to look at.  I always wish they were just all combined in one list, especially as there are more “deal” websites popping up all over the place.  So this morning, I decided to start taking on the task of putting all of them up on one site, but it’s taking a lot longer than I expected.  I am hoping to have them all up by the end of the week (and keep them updated since they change so often).

One other thing I should mention is about referrals.  We all know that referrals are a big deal and honestly, I don’t always like supporting big websites in their referral numbers because I’m positive that the owners of the websites that are referring us to these deals are keeping all of the extra cash they’re receiving for themselves.  And that’s why with the referrals that UCM receives from new members to these deal websites, we will be hosting giveaways of some of the deals, obviously dependent on those who sign up through UCM.  So I hope you will let us refer you to these deals and make sure to check back often because deals change every day!

A Day in the Life of a Mom … on vacation

0

My husband, almost one-year old, and I returned home from a short vacation last night.  It was much needed and especially after turning down going to the Caribbean and then regretting it, we were glad to be out of Utah Valley.

We headed down to Cedar City first to visit some family and then went to Las Vegas.  The last time we went to Vegas was just after we got pregnant (so quite a while ago) and it was basically miserable.  Not only did the cheap hotel concierge tell us that the Sahara Buffet was amazing (and it was some of the worst food I’ve ever eaten), but the whole area we were walking through was trashy.  We had no idea where to look in order to avoid nakedness so we walked looking up the entire time.  With this in mind, I was worried about going to Las Vegas again but we wanted to see the Jabbawockeez so we made the trip.

The Aria (hotel) had been recommended to us, especially as my husband loves technology and the Aria is the most technological hotel in Vegas.  And it was amazing.  The first time you walk into the hotel room, the lights turn on, the curtains open, and music starts playing.  Our clock allowed us to change the temperature, change the television, change the curtains, change the lights, change the music, and order room service or anything else we needed.

The Jabbawockeez show was not what we expected but was good nonetheless.  Originally we had planned to leave our daughter at my sister-in-law’s house and not spend time in Vegas but instead just drive to Vegas to see the show – we were worried our daughter would not want to sit through the entire show.  But with our changed plans, we took her to the show.  During the pre-show, she sat on my lap and clapped and danced to the music.  Once it started, she wanted to be held and rested her head on my shoulder for the entire show.  When we tried to cover her eyes from the bright lights that were shone on the audience or cover her ears because of extremely loud sounds, she pushed our hands away so she could watch the entire thing.  I’m so glad she wanted to pay attention because that was the biggest worry of the weekend.

On the way to Vegas, we stopped by the store and bought an umbrella stroller.  It was honestly the single most needed thing on our vacation for the babe.  Without it, life would have been much harder.  It was so lightweight, and so easy to maneuver anywhere we were going.  So if you go on vacation, I would recommend having or buying one!

I was grateful that we took her pack-n-play with us.  It was a bed she was used to and amazingly enough, she figured out the difference (most of the time) between when she was in there for sleeping and when she was in there to play (because we the hotel room was not as baby-proof as needed).  She slept so well each night and I’m sure our neighbors were really glad about that.  One of our neighbors, I’m pretty sure, glared at us as we entered our room with our daughter in tow as they opened up their door to their room.  I could just imagine them thinking, “Great.  We’re stuck in a room next to a baby.”  But luckily, there was no crying from our room at nights!

Also, I realized that as a mom, vacation involves the same duties as at home, just somewhere else and possibly somewhere more inconvenient.  I still had to worry about diapers, baths, naps, and feedings, just outside of the comfort of our home. However, at the same time, it was nice to be able to have my husband there with me to take on some of the responsibility that I’m usually left with from 8 am – 5:30 pm every day.

Here are some of the things my husband and I decided that you can’t leave home without for a vacation for a kid:

  • umbrella stroller
  • O Cereal (like Cheerios)
  • water bottle, sippy cup, etc.
  • something that reminds the child of home (for our daughter, it was a big stuffed black bear)
  • pack-n-play

FastKart Speedway Coupon

0

*Update:  There is currently a coupon for $25 for Go-Kart Outing and Pizza Monday–Thursday or Friday–Sunday. 08/04/11

I went to FastKart Speedway in Salt Lake once.  We went for a friend’s birthday and it was a lot of fun!

We each had 10 minutes to race.  We also got to put on awesome little outfits with the helmets which was fun.  The course is large and the cars were nice to ride in.  I’ll admit, however, I got really motion sick and because I am just under 5 feet tall, I had a really hard time reaching the gas pedal which made all the workers there tell me I had to go faster.

Today, Screamin’ Daily Deals is offering a $20 coupon for only $10 to go to the FastKart Speedway.  And I bought it.  I think it will be a lot of fun for my husband!

University Avenue in Provo.

*UPDATE* Although this deal is expired, Deal Dragon currently has an offer for the same thing.   Find other deals under our “Deals” tab!

Tight Wad in Utah – Low Entry Giveaways

1

Let me start by saying that I’m an only child which means that I am not always too good at sharing.  I never had to practice sharing because I had no siblings to steal my toys or food.  Somehow, however, I still learned to share … sometimes unwillingly though.  Like with this website.  When I find a gold mine, I hate to share it.

But I will.

This time.

Tight Wad in Utah is a website that lists all the low entry giveaways happening within the next week.  And I’m addicted.  I’ve been on a giveaway/freebies kick for the last few months and it’s hard not to enter into every sweepstakes, whether I want the product or not.  There’s just something so amazing about winning.

I’m hooked.

So join me in going to Tight Wad in Utah and start entering into the sweepstakes of your choice!  There’s so many and they’re updated frequently!

Fireworks in Utah County – July 4

0

Update:  July 4, 2013 fireworks

The 4th of July is almost here which means planning where to go to see fireworks is upon us.  My husband and I will be heading to Sugar House Park up in Salt Lake but there are other places in Utah County to see fireworks other than the big ones in Salt Lake.  (Did you know that Sugar House Park’s fireworks were cancelled due to lack of funding?  Thank you RC Willey for donating $25K to keep the tradition of Sugar House Park’s fireworks going!)

  • Orem Owlz Game, Friday, July 1 – Orem Owlz Ballpark, 970 West University Parkway – Game begins at 7:05 pm; fireworks are immediately after.  Tickets are $2-10 for the Owlz Baseball Game, children under 3 years are free.
  • Stadium of Fire, Saturday, July 2 – LaVell Edwards Stadium, 1650 North Canyon Road, Provo – Concert begins at 8 pm, fireworks will begin at roughly 10 pm.  In the past, I have gone to a field around 900 E. and Stadium Avenue (just West of the LDS Temple) to watch the fireworks, however, there are plenty of parking lots around the Stadium to park at to enjoy the fireworks.  Just make sure you plan to stay late or leave just before the fireworks are over or else you may be stuck in traffic for a long time (in the past, friends who lived 5 minutes away from the stadium were stuck in traffic for an hour).
  • Pleasant Grove, Monday, July 4 – Pleasant Grove Jr. High School, 810 N. 100 E., Pleasant Grove – Fireworks will begin at dark around 9:30 – 10 pm.  The fireworks can be seen from many locations in the area other than the junior high school.  Parking is unpleasant so make sure you arrive early or are willing to walk.  Free admission.
  • Lehi, Monday, July 4 – Thanksgiving Point, 3003 North Thanksgiving Point Way, Lehi – Gates at Electric Park will open by 6:00pm and concessions will open at 7:00pm.  Fireworks start at approximately 10:00pm and this year will be set off from the North side of the property.  Make sure to bring a blanket and to be patient with all the traffic at the end of the fireworks display!  Free admission.

These are the firework displays I know of in Utah County.  If you know of any more, please share!

Spotlight: LilyBelles Designs

0

“I never dreamed or thought I would be creating hair accessories but I guess your whole life changes [for the better] when you have a little one in your life. My crafting kick happened when I was pregnant and creating things for my little girl’s room. When Lily, my beautiful 18 month old Baby Girl was born I started experimenting with making headbands for her and that’s how I ended up opening my own Etsy Shop. If I am not creating, then I am thinking and dreaming about creating.

I hope you enjoy my creations as much as I have had designing, making and creating them.
Please stop by my shop often to see new and exciting creations.”

Top pilots from around the nation come to compete in this unique and difficult event.

Stadium of Fire featuring Brad Paisley and David Archuleta is Saturday, July 2, at 8 pm.  Fireworks follow the performances so if you don’t have tickets, you can still watch the fireworks.  One good location is on the lawn just West of the LDS Provo Temple, right off of 900 E.

The parade will follow the same route that it has in previous years. It begins at 960 N. University Ave. and proceeds south to 100 S. and then turns east to 200 E. From there it turns north to Center St. and then turns east and ends at 900 E.

Reserved bleacher seats for the Grand Parade may be purchased at the Utah Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau starting June 1. Tickets are $7.00 each. The offices of the Utah Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau are located in historic downtown Provo on the corner of University Avenue and 100 South.  Spectators may “stake out” their claim to a spot along University Avenue no earlier than July 3, 2011 at 3:00pm per Provo City Ordinance. All other portions of the parade route can not be claimed or reserved until July 4, 2011 at 5:00am.

Family Night: BBQ

0

Saturday we missed the big Kid’s Karnival at Macey’s and I was really bummed.  Plus I was craving a hot dog or burger, especially once we got to Costco and their $1.25 Hot Dog combo was just screaming my name.  And the genius that my husband is, suggested that we should just buy a grill.

So we did.

Isn’t she a cute little one?

And we have been grilling ever since.  Tonight, we have big plans to try our hand at some pork chops or other meat we rarely eat with some Herr’s Baby Back Ribs Chips (they are so tasty!  I’ve only found them at Winco), some fresh fruit, and maybe a baked potato.

Yesterday, my husband made some chicken with some homemade BBQ sauce.  This is the best BBQ sauce I’ve ever tasted, and I don’t like BBQ sauce much.

Saturday we grilled up some Polish Dogs from Costco with some friends.  There’s nothing better than Polish Dogs with High-Fructose-Corn-Syrup-Free Hot Dog Buns, chips, friends, and some Mario Kart!

BBQ Sauce Recipe, courtesy Big Al

Ingredients

2 cups ketchup
2 cups tomato sauce
1 1/4 cups brown sugar
1 1/4 cups red wine vinegar
1/2 cup unsulfured molasses
4 teaspoons hickory-flavored liquid smoke
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon celery seed
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper

Directions

In a large saucepan over medium heat, mix together the ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, wine vinegar, molasses, liquid smoke and butter. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, paprika, celery seed, cinnamon, cayenne, salt and pepper.
Reduce heat to low, and simmer for up to 20 minutes. For thicker sauce, simmer longer, and for thinner, less time is needed. Sauce can also be thinned using a bit of water if necessary. Brush sauce onto any kind of meat during the last 10 minutes of cooking.
