DLM: Babers the Explorer

0

To begin, in case you don’t know what a “babers” is, it’s my daughter.  As I understand, most significant others call each other “babe” or “baby” or some form of that but that’s not something my husband and I ever did.  But when our daughter was born, I thought it made sense to call her a “babe” since that’s actually what she is.  Somehow it developed into Babers, pronounced babe – ers.  Babers.

Now that you know what a Babers is, I can tell you that she is an explorer.  She spends most of her awake time roaming around the house, exploring undiscovered territory, learning about things, and trying so hard to get into the 25 pound bag of flour in the pantry.  There’s just no stopping her.  At times I try to put her in her room and close the door just so I know where she is and that she’s safe while I cook dinner but suddenly she becomes a puppy, scratching on the door and howling.  Yes, she actually makes howling noises … occasionally.  It’s pretty funny.

Her favorite places to be are in cupboards.  She pulls things out of them on a daily basis, especially the ones in the bathrooms.  Those are by far her favorite.  The pantry is probably a close second.  Besides the flour bag, there are all sorts of containers and boxes that need a good chewing on and could always use a little more flying through the air – she loves to throw things these days.

Speaking of throwing, things usually go through a process with her.  When she first picks something up, she examines it with her hands and eyes.  If there are no fun buttons or designs to trace with her little fingers, she moves on to chewing on it.  The duration of chewing varies but it’s usually soaked by the time she gives it up.  Once she’s done, and especially if I’m trying to take it away from her at all, she throws it.  Sometimes she throws it straight down but usually she throws it a foot or two away which is really obnoxious when it’s my phone since one button on my phone is already broken.

She loves to explore the outside too.  When it’s warm (which days are few and far between), we go outside and she explores the grass, the cement, the plants, and anything else she can get her hands on.

It’s so fun to watch her learn!

Oh, and the wet mark on her shirt is from her love of exploring the shower.  It echos and is so much fun to scream into!

DLM: The Up and Down Game

0

I look at all these little newborns and how they just lay so nicely in their parent’s arms.  I mean, it was just a few months ago that I would lay down my little babe, she would just stay still and stare up at me, give me one of her cute smiles, and not go anywhere!  Oh, how I miss those days!

These days, I put her down and she’s off.  It doesn’t seem to matter much where she’s going as long as she’s going.  This new place that we’ve moved into still has a lot more undiscovered areas and everyday she finds a new place or thing to play with.  Plus she loves to be able to stand up wherever she is.  And she takes full advantage of that while she’s in her crib.

As soon as we lay her down, she’s trying to stand up.  Earlier this month, we began swaddling her again.  It’s been off and on for the past couple of months but we realized that if we want her to go into her crib and not stand up for an hour before she starts throwing a fit because she’s so tired, we have to swaddle her.  Unfortunately, that only worked for so long.  As soon as we start to try to swaddle her, she starts wiggling.  She hates every second of it.  As soon as we leave, she twists and turns and turns into a little Houdini.  She can get out of her swaddle in no time at all.  And then she stands up and talks and laughs while walking around her crib.  And it drives me crazy!

Because not only does she not sleep for the hour or so that she refuses to sleep even though she’s exhausted, but she starts complaining a lot – she laughs and then cries.  Each time I walk in to see her standing up in her crib, she laughs and thinks she’s so funny.  I don’t find it as funny.  However, I also frequently find her in her crib sitting up, crying.  I try to help her lay down (even though she knows how to do that) and try to get her to relax.  And she hates that.  She only screams louder in my face.

So if you’re ever around me between 8:30 – 9:30 am or 1:30 – 3 pm as I try to get her to go down for her nap, you can see how stressed I am.  Her sleep is so important to her but unfortunately, she doesn’t know that.  I mean, honestly, if I could take two 2-3 hour naps each day, I’d love it, but she doesn’t love it so much.

Lately I’ve just been letting her laugh and talk, then cry and scream until she sits down and falls asleep.  It’s always kinda funny to go into her room after she’s cried herself to sleep to see her bent over, like she was sitting and fell forward asleep, sleeping so soundly.  I wish there was a better solution but I can’t seem to find one as of right now.  So for now, she’ll get to spend a couple hours in her crib each day, walking around and talking.

But on the flip side, I’m so proud of her that she’s so strong – after spending months just watching her lay on the ground on her back or sitting up but not move and refuse to learn how to crawl, I wasn’t sure if she’d ever try to move.  And now I know – she loves to move!

The Children’s Place, Memorial Day Sale

0

There are three main stores I like to shop at for my child’s clothes:  Target, 77 Kids, and The Children’s Place (TCP).  I can usually get the best prices at these stores when good deals come around and for 77 Kids and The Children’s Place, I can shop online, get a percent off, and get free shipping if I just wait for the deal to come around.

Well, my fellow moms, the time has come again.  With Memorial Day just around the corner, TCP has some great deals as well as free shipping.  If you’ve been itching to buy something new for your little one, I would say now is a great time.

Stoneground Restaurant Review, Salt Lake City

0

My husband and I made a trip up to Salt Lake last night to go visit some friends who are at Primary Children’s Hospital with their 4 1/2 month old who has been there since birth.  We had originally made plans to get together with them to have dinner at our place but since they are at the hospital all the time and would have to rush home to eat with us, we figured it would just be better to go visit them and take them some food.

We had a $25 gift certificate from restaurant.com to use at Stoneground in Salt Lake so we thought this would be a good time to use it.  Our only problem was that on the certificate, it said it had to be used for dine-in only.  With hopes that we could use it even though we wanted to take the food out with us, we went.  We’ve enjoyed the restaurant in the past so maybe they could make an exception.  Besides, up until this point, we have always raved about their restaurant and we wanted to share this with our friends.

We gave them our pity case – our friends were in the hospital with their baby and we really just want to take your food with us to them.  The waitress was nice and understood us.  Plus she was getting a good deal – she would still get tipped but wouldn’t have to wait on us for an hour while we finished all our food.  But the manager stuck to the rules.  We had to eat something at the restaurant before leaving.    He claimed it was all about the dining experience and atmosphere.

Well, to be honest, being made to stay there against our will was not a pleasant experience.  Maybe I’m just being silly but I really don’t understand the point of being there.  If I like the food, I’ll go back and order more food and I’ll tell my friends how much I like their food and I’ll take them there … which I’ve done before with Stoneground.  If I don’t like the food, I won’t be back.  For me, it’s not about the “dining experience” as much as it is the food.  Of course, the atmosphere will always play a bit of a role as to whether I will go back for more food or not (I don’t like to eat when I feel like everything is ghetto), but the food is the main thing that will get me back to the restaurant.  But holding me there like a hostage is not something I enjoy.

We ordered a Caesar Salad, the House Pasta, and the Stoneground Pizza.  In the past, I have eaten their entrees and they have always been really good.  Although the Caesar Salad was spectacular, I was not the biggest fan of the pasta and pizza.

The salad was what we chose to eat there … what we were forced to eat before we left.  It came in a large bowl with full leaves of lettuce with the usual Parmesan and Romano cheeses, a light Caesar dressing, a touch of pepper, and a few croutons.  The flavors were spot on and I could have eaten the entire thing by myself and been satisfied.

We took the rest of the salad, pasta, and pizza with us to the hospital where we could sit and mull over why it was so important that we eat a leaf of lettuce before we left the restaurant.  To dirty more plates?  To make the waitress work harder?  Who knows.

The pasta was interesting.  It was a penne pasta with sun-dried tomatoes, red onions, button mushrooms, and spinach in a smoked mozzarella alfredo.  I generally love all of these things but combined in this pasta, it was a little overwhelming.  I would have preferred a lot less onions and tomatoes because that pasta was packed with them.

The pizza had all the general “combo” toppings with pepperoni, sausage, olives, and onions.  It was a very flat pizza which I would normally enjoy but I felt like there were just not enough toppings.  The sausage was very overpowering compared to the rest of the pizza which made me feel like I should have just bought a sausage pizza since the other toppings just seemed to be in the way.  However the case, I ate the pizza like I hadn’t eaten in ages and enjoyed almost every minute of it.

Overall, I was not very pleased in my experience with Stoneground.  Although our waitress, Selena, was very nice to us, I was not as impressed with the manager and the foods as I have been in the past.  The food is more authentic than an Olive Garden (apparently over 80% of the recipes are from the owners’ grandma … and I always love a grandma’s cooking), but for the price that you pay, I would almost prefer an Olive Garden over Stoneground … not that I won’t be back, however.  Their fries are so yummy!

Mon-Wed 11am-10pm | Thurs-Sat 11am-11pm | Sunday 5pm-9pm

Located on the second floor across the street from the Salt Lake City Library.

This is a urban-chic restaurant with the option of playing pool after enjoying your soup, salad, sandwich, entree, or pizza.  My favorite place to sit is next to the window – I would say it’s the best seat in the house.

From Disposable to Cloth to Disposable

0

Back in January, we began our journey with cloth diapers (CD).  It was a little tough at first to understand how long I can let them go before they leak and how to fit them just right to my little baby but within a week, I felt like I was a pro.  It’s been about four months and I have enjoyed them quite a bit.

However, at the beginning of this month, we moved into a place that had no washer and dryer.  Since we sold the ones we had two years ago when we moved into a place that had a washer and dryer last year, we now have no washer and dryer which has been one of the most miserable things (other than having no stove/oven for a few days, no internet for almost a week, and no power for a day) about moving into this new house.  And we made a tough decision when we knew we wouldn’t have a washer and dryer for a month – we decided to go back to disposable diapers.

Gasp … I know, right?

I thought it would be fine – a lot easier and faster with a lot less laundry to do every few days but really, it has been so obnoxious.  I’m taking the trash out every day or two to keep the stench down from the disposables, I’m filling up our garbage can which must mean I’m helping fill out the land fills, we had to shell out $30 for another 216 diapers (we had disposables left over from when we bought some in January), and although the babe’s bum looks a lot smaller nowadays, I don’t feel like it’s as comfortable for her.

I miss my cloth diapers.  In fact, a few days ago I bought more.  I think it’s just because I’m missing them so much … although I have been really interested in the bumGenius 4.0 diapers so that may have played a part in my buying some.

If there are any of you out there wondering if it’s a good idea to make the switch to cloth diapers, my suggestion would be:  DO IT!  It is so worth it and really helps save money … if you don’t keep buying CDs like I do.

I had a bunch of concerns about starting CDing and here’s what I think about them now:

  • Gross:  just the words “cloth diapering” made me cringe with disgust.  People actually reuse diapers?  Well, yes, and it’s not as gross as I thought it would be.  All CDs go into some sort of pail of your choice and stay there until you’re ready to wash them (every couple of days so the stench doesn’t soak in too much).  I have a pail with a lid so the smell is even better contained and it is easier than doing regular laundry.  I just pour the contents of the pail right into the washer and never touch anything else.  With regular laundry, I usually have to do a bit of sorting and never have the pleasure of dumping – I always have to grab the clothes with my hands since we have a big laundry … thing.
  • Sanitization? So the CDs go into the washer and get washed, but are they actually clean when they come out?  I think so.  It’s all about the hot water.  I was worried that my washer may not produce enough hot water but if I’m really that worried about it, I boil hot water and pour it into the washing machine to make sure it’s up to my standards.  Plus when they come out of the washer and dryer, I would never guess that there was urine on any of it.  Not only that, but there are liners you can buy (or make) to make the disposing of unwantables quick and painless to toss into the toilet.  I bought some but haven’t used them since the first couple weeks of CDing.  I’m sure they’re great but unneeded since my babe usually just uses the toilet.  Besides, let’s be honest, you have to deal with that kind of stuff whether you’re using CD or disposables so really, CDing is no worse, in my opinion.
  • Time consuming:  I thought that CDing would take up way more time than I wanted to give it, but it really doesn’t.  Sure, there’s an extra load of laundry that needs to be done every now and then but it’s not 100 years ago – I don’t have to sit over a washing board for hours on end to get the laundry done.  All I’ve got to do is hit some buttons, make one change from the washer to the dryer, and I’m done.  Plus if I’m really feeling lazy, I throw all of the diapers (the covers and the inserts) into the babe’s clean diaper bin and only worry about putting them back together as she needs them.  Time consuming?  Not at all.
  • The upfront cost:  Okay, this one was pretty bad for us.  We ended up spending a lot more than I had planned on because I didn’t really know many others that did CDs and so I tried out a bunch of different brands and types.  But really, if you want to go cheap, you could spend less than $150, have 24-30 diapers (probably more than you need), and you wouldn’t have to buy more diapers until maybe your 6-8th child.  These things can last for ever.  We’ve spent about $400-450 because I’m addicted to trying new brands but when you figure that a Costco size box of diapers costs roughly $35-40 and that’s what you’re spending every month … well, I think we’ve had a pretty good deal.
  • Leaks:  it all depends on the brand.  Obviously more expensive ones prevent leaks a little better but as long as we’re consistent with changing her, we have no leaking issues.

Any other concerns?  Leave us a comment or email us!

Family Night: Orem & Lehi Trafalga

Okay, so this isn’t really a Monday Night family night activity, but it can be a Thursday family night activity.

One random night last year, my husband and I walked over to Trafalga in Orem since we lived really, really close to it with a few friends of ours.  We were surprised to hear that our total per couple for a round of mini golf was only $6!  And that’s because Thursdays are $3 Thursdays – everything is $3 at both Orem and Lehi!

Walk With Angels Day

0

I attended the Second Annual Walk With Angels today and just got back home.  It was a huge success with lots of activities, food, Star Wars characters, mascots from local universities, a raffle (we won two free meals at Tucanos!), a silent auction, and other things to make the four hours that we were there fly by!

There were so many people that we spanned the length of about three blocks!

These kids are really special and I’m so glad I got to spend my afternoon surrounded by them!

DLM: Cutting My 10-Month Old’s Hair

0

My day in the life of a mom (DLM):

Before

During

The Remains

We did it.  We cut our 10-month old’s hair on Sunday.  It was a lot tougher to do than I thought it was going to be.  I thought the mirror in front of her and the comb in her hand would distract her enough to keep her head still so I could make a few snips, but it didn’t work.  She was all over the place.

But we cut almost 2 inches off of her hair.  She looks so much better without her awful mullet.  It has also made her look about a year older than she actually is.

And the best part?  I didn’t cry once.

Walk With Angels Reminder

0

My great idea was to highlight a Walk With Angels Team every day but I obviously failed miserably with that.  The walk is two days away and I only spotlighted one team.  I blame the big move and lack of internet that stopped me from achieving this goal but really, it was probably just out of forgetfulness and laziness.  All of these kids are great, though, and so if you have a spare few minutes (or hour in my case), go read about these amazing children and families.

The point is, these “angels” are really special and this is a great opportunity to support them and their families.  The walk, held at 500 N. Center Street in Lehi, is this Saturday, May 21.  Registration and activities begin at 9:30 am, the walk begins at 11 am, and more fun in the park (Wines Park) continues until 2 pm.

Please don’t pass up this amazing opportunity.  Not only will you be helping those with special “angels” in their lives, but you’ll also be getting some exercise, some time in warm weather after all this gloomy weather, and a place to let your kids go crazy with all of the fun activities that Walk With Angels is providing.

Although registering online has been closed, you may still register Saturday morning at 9:30 am.  You can pay by cash or check. Individual registration is $15 and family registration is $30.  And remember, all proceeds go to the United Angels Foundation to support parents and families of children with special needs.
