Last night we had the opportunity to experience Monster Jam at the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.

As in years past, monster trucks compete against each other to win different rounds of competition. Our favorite trucks include the Scooby-Doo truck and my daughter definitely loves any truck driven by a girl. My son loves all of the trucks and never really has a favorite but he does love to watch them jump and do donuts in the dirt.

Today, January 7, is the last day to catch Monster Jam in Salt Lake City this year. There are 2 times to catch Monster Jam – 1 pm and 7 pm.

Fans are always encouraged to come to the arena early on Saturday for the Monster Jam® Pit Party pre-show experience which provides unprecedented access to the Monster Jam trucks and drivers – you can see the trucks up close, meet the athletes, get their autographs and take photos!

Draper Terra Mia Grand Opening

0

In case you missed our last post about Terra Mia, it’s one of my favorite local spots to find authentic Italian food. It is also very reasonably priced.

Terra Mia is opening a new location on January 2, 2017 in Draper at 12361 Minuteman Drive. This is a great location for those of you who live in Northern Utah County so that you’re a little closer to a Terra Mia!

Terra Mia offers authentic Neapolitan Pizzas, Panuozzis, Pastas, Soups, Salads, and Desserts. There is also a kids’ menu option for the little ones. However, my kids have shared the pizza and pastas with us and have loved them. My favorite was the Ravioli Boccaccia which is a homemade spinach and ricotta ravioli in a boccaccia sauce. The kids loved that one, as well as the Penne Alfredo with chicken.

Gelato in Italy is one of the best foods to eat while there. We have struggled to find gelato here in the States that we like just as much as in Italy but the gelato at Terra Mia is delicious! Yes, it’s pricey, but worth it.

When you visit Terra Mia, make sure you tag us on Facebook or Instagram (@utahvalleymoms) or use #utahvalleymoms so we can see how you liked your food!

Midway Ice Castles is a unique opportunity to visit man-made icicles made into a large castle. Last year, the Midway Ice Castles included tunnels and even a large slide. You can read more about our Ice Castles experience here.

This year, the Midway Ice Castles is set to open around January 11, 2017. Opening and the creation of the Ice Castles are completely reliant on the weather. In years past, it has opened earlier in the year, sometimes later, and sometimes closes early because of warmer weather.

The location of the Ice Castles is different again this year. Make note that the Midway Ice Castles will be able to be viewed at The Homestead at 700 Honestead Drive, Midway, Utah.

Meet Ice Princesses on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-5 pm. Fire performances will be on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30-8:30 pm.

What to wear to the Midway Ice Castles

When you are preparing to head to the Midway Ice Castles, remember how cold it will be and that you will be surrounded by ice. We recommend wearing and taking the following:

  • Snow boots
  • Snow pants
  • Coat
  • Gloves
  • Hat
  • Hand warmers, especially for the little ones
  • To pull little ones, bring a small sled instead of a stroller

The terrain of the Midway Ice Castles

The ice castles, as they are made of ice, can get slick while walking around, especially if it’s snowing at the time you arrive. They do their best to keep the snow on the ground sanded and salted but there could still be icy areas. The ground is not necessarily level and if you’re planning to go down the slide, expect an incline up to the slide. Last year, there was an arch above one section and it narrowed which meant that some people had a hard time getting through. There are large openings, as well as tunnels to walk through.

Midway Ice Castles discount

If you are wanting to see the Ice Castles, you can get a discount.

Mad Greens Lehi Review
This is a sponsored post. Please refer to our disclosure statement.

MAD Greens is located at 50 N. 1200 E. #100 in Lehi, Utah. It has only been open a few months but delivers some great, healthy options for those looking to eat out.

Marley Hodgson and Dan Long, lifelong friends and chefs, founded Colorado-based MAD Greens in 2004. They were intent on addressing the lack of fresh, fast and healthy fare available to the average American consumer. Back in 2004, MAD Greens was a pioneer of the fast-casual salad category and over the past 12 years, it has grown to be a leader in both the region and the category.

Mad Greens Lehi Review

One of my favorite parts about MAD Greens is that it offers children healthy options. Too often when we go out, my kids are eating fries and drinking extremely sugary, unhealthy drinks. The Kids Awesome Box is my favorite with edamame, chicken, apples, carrots, pasta, and ranch. I personally love the Ty Cobb salad and love that bleu cheese dressing.  You can read more about how we ended up really liking our experience at MAD Greens here.

Mad Greens Lehi Review

MAD Greens has fresh-ingredient foods including paninis, wraps, soups, salads, and juices. When you walk in, you can order at the counter, follow your food being made down the line, and pay for it at the end. You can customize any of your food which makes it even more delicious.

Mad Greens Lehi Review

Currently, you can find MAD Greens locations in Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and Texas. You can order online so that you can skip the line and they also offer catering.

MAD Greens Giveaway

We want you to have the opportunity to enjoy a fresh, healthy, delicious meal as well! MAD Greens is giving one lucky winner a $40 gift card which would be perfect for you and 2 or 3 friends.

To enter to win, you have 3 options (you can do just one or all 3):

  1. Leave a comment on this blog post about who you would take with you or if you’ve tried MAD Greens before.
  2. Leave a comment on our Facebook post.
  3. Leave a comment on our Instagram post.

This giveaway will end Wednesday, December 21 and one random winner will be chosen and notified. No purchase necessary. Instagram and Facebook do not endorse or sponsor this giveaway. Good luck!

The Leonardo + Discount Code

The Leonardo Museum

The Leonardo in Downtown Salt Lake City gives guests a chance to experience interactive and thought-provoking exhibits.

The Leonardo Museum

Currently their main exhibit is Flight. It features airplanes, interactive games, and the chance to even sit in the cockpit of a huge plane that they fixed up to be in the exhibit. We probably spent the most time on the flight simulation. You sit in a chair with a little make-shift cockpit with a controller that allows you to maneuver the plane.

The Leonardo Museum

Once you go upstairs, there is a lot to see and do, especially for the kids. There are lots of things to explore and play with. Right now there there is a section of cardboard creations. My son loved those as he loves creating things out of cardboard. These, however, were amazing. The train was probably one of our favorites.

The Leonardo Museum

My favorite exhibit is the “Where Children Sleep.” When you walk in, there are different stations that you can crawl onto and sit and read these books that they have created. At first, I thought it was going to be a cute little story about different beds children have, maybe a princess bed, a fire engine bed, etc. I was definitely wrong, however. The book has a photo of a child from around the world and then a photo of their bedroom. Sometimes it’s a dirt floor, sometimes it’s a couch outside, and sometimes it’s a bed like what we’d expect with blankets, a mattress, and pictures of what the child likes on the walls. It was humbling to experience and I look forward to taking my children back and reading more of the book. The photos and stories are also on the walls around the exhibit in case you don’t want to sit and read.

We spent an hour there and probably only got through half of the museum. Apparently we missed out on some fun exhibits and sections, including one area where you get to draw all over the room, including on the walls.

Luminaria Review 2016

Luminaria Review

We were given the opportunity to visit Luminaria, Thanksgiving Point’s Christmas light experience. In years past, they have had a drive-through car show with music but this year, you get to get out of your car and walk through the gardens that have been transformed into different light shows and categories.

As you enter Luminaria, you get quite the experience with hundreds of lights leading to a tall light tree. Okay, maybe it’s not a tree, but that’s what I imagine it to be. As you start walking down the path, you walk through a Candy Cane Lane and other different sections. There are lights and decorations to match what you’re walking through, music, plus something I noticed that totally won me over was that each section smelled like what we were walking through. It smelled flowery, piney, and sweet when needed. I’m a full-sensory kind of person and the smells just put me over the edge. It was perfect.

Luminaria Review

There are other areas where you get to meet reindeer and where you get to walk through statues of the life of Christ. My kids’ favorite part was the end where there were games, fire pits, and one last place to buy drinks and treats, although we didn’t buy anything.

The amount of lights was incredible. I enjoyed the section dedicated to Christ since it is the reason for the season. We enjoyed dancing and singing to the different music as we walked along. If you’re looking for something new for the family to try this year, this is a good thing to try.

The biggest question we have been asked since going is whether it is worth it, especially as this is a new attraction. If you enjoy Christmas lights, this is definitely a once-a-season experience. I personally would not go again but that’s because we’ve already seen the lights and have been able to enjoy it. Keep in mind that tickets are $20/adult and $17/child. They have other options for packages that you can find here. Thanksgiving Point members get 10% off admission tickets.

Stay tuned to our Facebook and Instagram accounts for photos from while we were there!

Candlelight Christmas discount

Candlelight Christmas will be held from December 9-23, 2016 at This Is The Place Heritage Park in Salt Lake City.

Back in simpler days Christmas was a time of great kindness:  Folks wandering the avenues, caroling for neighbors, gathering and warming themselves by a street fire, children wrote letters to Father Christmas and gingerbread cookies were crafted in an old-fashioned coal stove, storytelling was told as the family settled in around the hearth of the home, an old fashioned Christmas.  Then time advanced and Christmas goes by in a black Friday rush.  Why not slow it down and bring back the magic of Christmas at This Is The Place Heritage Park.  Visit Historic homes and warm yourself by street corner fires while listening to the Heritage singers.  See Father Christmas, and a live nativity.  Kids can enjoy the naughty and nice list, and maybe even a warm meal at the Huntsman Grill.

Healthy Eating Options at Mad Greens, a Review

0
Mad Greens Lehi Review
This is a sponsored post. Please refer to our disclosure statement.

I’m going to take a wild guess and assume that most of you are like me, busy. Or when you’re not busy, you’re tired from having been so busy.

Most of the week I spend in the car, driving myself and children around to and from various things that range from practices, school, and parties/play dates. It gets a little crazy. By the time we arrive home at 6:40 pm, the last thing I want to do is make dinner. Even when we’re out all day, sometimes it’s hard to stop by home to grab lunch, especially when we’re not anywhere near home. And that’s why I’m grateful for places like Mad Greens. They are providing healthy eating options while out and about for us busy moms with fantastic choices for the kids, too.

Mad Greens Lehi Review

Mad Greens recently opened in Lehi, Utah at 50 N. 1200 E. #100. Once you walk in the door, you go down the north side of the restaurant to order. After ordering your salad, panini, soup, wrap, or kids meal, you follow it down the line of fresh ingredients, pay for it, and then you can enjoy relaxing at the restaurant or take it to go.

Mad Greens Lehi Review

We tried the Annie Oakley panini with sourdough bread, Swiss cheese, chicken, avocado, and bacon. It came with a small side salad. We also tried the Ty Cobb salad with avocado, tomatoes, bacon, red onions, eggs, and grilled chicken with blue cheese dressing.

Mad Greens Lehi Review

Mad Greens Lehi Review

I was really looking forward to having the kids try the kids meals. One of toughest things about eating out is that I feel like I’m always getting my kids chicken nuggets and fries. They are not healthy and don’t do much for my kids. Two of the Mad Greens’ kids meals come in a little bento box with 6 dividers for the food which is great so none of the food touches for those picky eaters. We tried the Kids Awesome Box which consisted of grilled citrus chicken, pasta, edamame, apples, carrot sticks, and ranch dressing. It was perfect for them and so much healthier than normal options. This will for sure be one of our top places to find healthy eating-out meals for our kids. Plus they ate almost the entire thing so that was another win.

Mad Greens Lehi Review

The last thing I NEED to talk about is the drink options at Mad Greens. They use maine root. which are handcrafted beverages. They use cane juice to sweeten their sodas which means no extra processing and no additives. We tried all of them. My favorites were the cola and the root beer. Seriously. If you haven’t tried them yet, you at least need to stop in to grab a drink.

We’d love to see what you chose to eat at Mad Greens – use the tags #madgreens and/or #utahvalleymoms.

Discovery Center at Family Search, Salt Lake City

0

We had the opportunity to visit the Family Search Center located at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Downtown Salt Lake City to enjoy the Discovery Center.

If you’ve done any family history, this is the place you’re going to want to be to be able to really get a feel for your ancestors and what it was like when they lived. With your free Family Search account, you can log in at the Discovery Center and explore your family tree.

This experience was perfect for someone like me who has a lot of family history done but who actually has not done most of it. I don’t spend much time on Family Search and don’t do a lot of searching, however, it was fun to go experience my family line through photos and stories on big screens and to see a big picture.

discovery-center-family-search

At one station, you are able to see where all of your ancestors are from. It shows you a map and you can see where the majority of your family was born and resided. At another station, you learn more about what was happening in the world when that ancestor/family member was born. While movie tickets were 5 cents when my grandfather was born, when my daughter was born, the average price was $8.

learn-about-ancestors

The Discovery Center also has rooms where you can record stories. Take a USB with you and you can save them!

share-family-history-stories

In 2017, they will be opening up a new center just around the corner that is 3 times as big and with new interactive programs. For now, however, visit the Joseph Smith Memorial Building (15 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah) on the main floor near the north side.
