Terra Mia, Orem Review + Giveaway

Authentic Italian food
This is a sponsored post. Please refer to our disclosure statement.

Recently my family had the opportunity to visit Terra Mia Pizzeria in Orem (1050 S. 750 E.). We tried a variety of pastas, a pizza, and a couple of desserts.

After emigrating from Italy in 1996, Ernesto Lo Russo started several successful business in Utah. None of them however fulfilled his desire to share his culture and traditional Neapolitan style cooking. Then, in June of 2009, Ernesto dedicated a handful of cherished family recipes and his bold Italian attitude into the opening of a little restaurant in Orem. Whether it’s through pizza, pasta or dessert, Terra Mia proudly shares its love for Italian food and bringing people together in the best way we know how: by serving delicious and fully authentic Neapolitan dishes.

Back in 2009, I had the opportunity to travel to Italy. We visited a few cities and saw all the sites we could while there for a week. However, my favorite part of the trip was the food. I could have eaten their pizza, pasta, and gelato for the rest of my life and never complained. Coming back from their food was quite an adjustment. I missed the pizza and how they would weigh it to determine its price. It wasn’t drenched in cheese and the flavor was amazing no matter which little shop we stopped at. The pasta was always filled with flavor and the right amount of sauce for the pasta and my bread.k The gelato … is nothing like ice cream. It’s creamy, thick, and amazing. Coming back to Utah meant that chain restaurants who call themselves “Italian food” was about as good as it got. Frozen food sections carried gelato but it was never right, probably because it’s frozen.

Last week when we tried Terra Mia, all of those good Italian food feelings came back and I’ve been craving it ever since. Here is what we tried (note: the pasta in photos are half orders):

Quattro Formaggi
4 Formaggi Pizza
Pesto in Orem
Penne with Creamy Pesto
Marinara
Penne with Marinara Sauce
Ravioli Boccaccia
Ravioli Boccaccia
Chicken Alfredo
Penne Alfredo with Chicken

I was impressed that even with the pizza, they cooked it according to our family. We could have had it crispy but with children, they usually make it a little softer which was perfect for my family. I loved that they had suggestions according to what we like to eat and our tastes.

My favorite was the Ravioli Boccaccia and I loved the Stracciatella gelato. My family loved all the pastas and I accidentally ate almost the entire pizza by myself.

If you’re looking for typical “Utah Italian” food, then this will not do. However, if you want to taste a bit of Italy, food with some real love put into it, this is the place.

Terra Mia is located in the University Mall area across from the Cinemark. By 2017, a new Terra Mia will be located in Draper, Utah.

Disney On Ice Passport to Adventure Review

Pack your bags and prepare to travel the world with your tour guides Mickey and Minnie Mouse with Disney On Ice Passport to Adventure coming to Salt Lake City November 10th – 13th at Vivint Smart Home Arena. Audiences will be taken on a tour through the timeless worlds of Disney’s The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, and the #1 animated feature film of all time, Frozen.

We were able to see the show opening night and the kids loved it! My kids unfortunately don’t know the story of The Lion King very well and have only seen Peter Pan once or twice but they were mesmerized by the stories and music. Peter Pan also had flying so the kids definitely loved that part.

Frozen was a fun story for the kids to watch. We had a great time singing and dancing. Even my husband joined in. It was fun to watch the condensed story but also see all of the ice skating/dancing to go with it.

Giveaway: Hale Centre Theatre’s “Sister Act” 2016

0
Hale Centre Theatre giveaway

Hale Centre Theatre in West Valley is one of my favorite date night locations which is odd because as of three years ago, I couldn’t stand to go to plays or musicals. However, my husband loves plays and musicals and took me to see “Wicked” when it was in town because he knew that I would love it. I went, mostly for him, and oddly enough, I loved it. Then “Les Miserables” was playing at Hale Centre Theatre and he knew I’d want to see that one as well so he bought as tickets and I fell in love.

Hale Centre Theatre in West Valley City is not that close to where I live but we make the journey up there a few times a year to see one of their plays or musicals. Currently, “Sister Act” is playing. Apparently it’s a movie from the ’90s but I somehow missed that and had never heard of the story before we went to see “Sister Act” as a play.

Sister Act

The actors were hilarious, the story was well-performed, and the music was great. I had a hard time sitting still in my seat – I just wanted to keep dancing to the music. I won’t give away the whole story for those of you like me who had never heard of the play before but essentially, a lady needs to be put into hiding and ends up trying to blend in with devout nuns.

HCT will present more than 60 consecutive performances of Sister Act. Performance times are 7:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and matinees Saturdays at 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m through December 3. No performances will be held November 24. No children under the age of five are permitted in the theater. Ticket prices are a great value for this fun production, at only $32 for adults and $16 for children ages five through 11.

For ticket information call 801-984-9000, go to www.hct.org, or visit the box office at 3333 S. Decker Lake Drive in West Valley City. For updates, contests and information on the current theater season, follow Hale Centre Theatre on Facebook. In conjunction with the production, the HCT Applauds recipient for Sister Act is the Utah Refugee Center. The Utah Refugee Center provides resources to meet the unique needs of the 1,100 refugees resettled in Utah each year.

Hale Centre Theatre is also building a new theater in Sandy just off of I-15. It will have two stages, one round stage and one regular stage. It will open in 2017 with “Forever Plaid” from September 1-November 15 and “Aida” from November 17-January 20.

New Deseret Industries Opening in Springville

0
Springville Deseret Industries thrift store
This is a sponsored post. Please refer to our disclosure statement.

On Thursday, October 27, a brand new Deseret Industries will be opening in Springville and you better believe that we are going to be there! I had the opportunity to take a sneak peak at the items and it looks incredible. There are many brand new items as well as gently used items that they will be selling.

I think most of us who live in Utah have heard of Deseret Industries because of one reason or another. Growing up, it was the place I’d go with my mom while she looked for antiques. Now as a mom, it’s a place I go often to drop off all of the things my children have grown out of:  toys, clothes, and shoes. For me, it’s just a good way of getting rid of the things we don’t need anymore and I always knew I was serving by giving it away but I had no idea how it actually worked.

Recommended by Bishops, volunteer leaders in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, people can take a recommendation to Deseret Industries that says that they have been recommended to receive employment through Deseret Industries. Up until a couple weeks ago, I always believed it was disabled people or people who had colorful backgrounds and needed to try to get back into the workplace. NOT TRUE!

Deseret Industries employs those who generally have been out of work for a period of time and are looking to find a job and/or increase their education. These associates may come from any background, even having had a 6-figure income at one point in their life, and helps them become employable again. They help pay for education and help them receive the skills and training they need to get the type of job they want.

Donated items are sold from Deseret Industries at affordable prices helping everyone involved. Because all of the items are donated, new things are coming in constantly so just because you don’t see something you’re looking for while at the store, it might go to the sales floor later that day or later that week, you just never know.

Items generally spend somewhere between 4-6 weeks on the sales floor. If they are not sold in that time, they are put into large pods and sent to the Humanitarian Center in Salt Lake. Those clothes are sorted into groups for different countries according to what they can wear and their needs.

If the items cannot be sent to the Humanitarian Center, they will be sent onto other recycling programs. Everything goes somewhere.

Recenly we wrote about shopping at Deseret Industries for Halloween clothes. Here is more information about the Springville store opening:

Living Planet Aquarium Halloween

We had the chance to go visit the aquarium last weekend which was perfect during Fall Break. We ended up spending a few hours there, enjoying all of the fish and creatures. We also never realized that the 4D movies are included with your ticket price so we watched the 4D movies which was really fun.

The kids had fun finding all of the spiders and spider webs. There were also a lot of skeletons that the kids found. We started counting at first but quickly lost track of how many there were.

We also happened to be right on time to see the sea otter feeding and the penguin feeding. The river otters were fun because it was sort of like an egg hunt with their food. They knew it would be all over the place and ran around quickly to find all of the food, especially the fish. We also got to watch them enjoy their food while floating on their back down the river. Adorable!

The penguins were fun to watch as well. I enjoyed learning about how their molting and how they each have their individual personalities. And if you can see their band on their fin, you can see their name. Uno was my kids’ favorite penguin.

I am not that creative of a person. I really like to go to a store and buy entire displays or whatever the nice worker lady/man tells me goes together. When it comes to Halloween, it’s one holiday where I know that I’m going to have to depend on the creativity of others. I used to feel bad for my kids, that they wouldn’t have some extremely awesome, unique, and totally adorable costume that is Pinterest-worthy.

Here in Utah Valley, we have an array of thrift stores. For my Halloween needs, I chose to visit Deseret Industries (DI). Each time you shop at DI, you are helping fund job training. The employees at DI come from a various array of backgrounds and DI is providing one-on-one job coaching and helping develop a career plan.

There are a lot of costumes to choose from, as well as other Halloween decorations and accessories.

The DI is one store I remember from my youth. We’d go quite often to sift through the various things in the store. Each day, new items are donated to Deseret Industries. If you want to make a donation, pack everything into your car, pull on the side of DI where donations are accepted, and an associate will help you unload your car, you never even have to get out! You can obtain a tax deductible slip for your donation from them and that’s it! Because almost everything in the store is donated, you never know what you will find. It’s better than a yard sale because you can go any day of the week (except Sunday) to find some great finds at really low prices.

This costume cost $22 for everything pictured. The vest was the costume item I found and was only $3.

About a week ago, I went over to my local Deseret Industries and to my surprise, there were a few racks with Halloween costumes! My only regret so far has been not being able to find time to go back to see what other costumes they have because I was shocked by their prices. I have been looking at Halloween costumes that are ranging in the $16-50 range which in my opinion, is outrageous! However, these costumes ranged from $1-10. Even some of the adult costumes were hovering in the $5 which is completely affordable. Each costume was unique and once I found a couple of items for costumes, I was able to go around the store to find items to go with the Halloween costumes. One costume I bought for myself isn’t shown but it’s a gorgeous kimono. I’m Asian and don’t own one so it just made sense to buy it. I also put together a cowgirl costume and another little Asian costume for the kids.

This costume was $13. The top was found with costumes and was $5.

Deseret Industries also has many other things other than costumes. They have designer clothes, shoes, furniture, kitchenware, toys, and more! You can revamp your entire house at great prices.

In Utah Valley, there are 3 Deseret Industries:

  • Provo – 1415 N. State Street, Provo
  • American Fork – 435 S. 500 E., American Fork
  • Springville – 655 S. 1750 W., Springville (opens October 27, 2016)

Have you been to a Deseret Industries before?
