Ubooly

0

Have you heard of Ubooly before?  If you haven’t, it’s about time for you to meet Ubooly:

Ubooly is a lovable stuffed animal where you can put your smart phone and suddenly a stuffed animal comes to life and interacts with your child. Ubooly plays games, does activities, and tells stories. My daughter says about Ubooly, “I like him to talk and play games with me. He says, ‘Let’s come dance. Throw me on the floor. Throw me up the sky.'” And she’s only three. From Ubooly, she has been reviewing numbers, letters, words, the ocean, the body, and many other things.

This Ubooly is unique because it is built to be interactive and different for a long period of time. It also lets a child play while learning. I personally enjoy that it keeps my phone safe from being thrown, dropped, etc. and I love watching my kids cuddle with Ubooly while he’s telling a story.

There is currently a Kickstarter campaign for Ubooly. By backing the Kickstarter, your pledge will provide you with one of many fun products including a limited edition Blue Ubooly in regular or jumbo size!

Here are some reasons I love Ubooly:

  • Ubooly Inc is on a quest to build a toy that matters.
  • It’s not about selling a product to your kids, it’s about giving them a toy that will last.
  • The average retention of a toy is 4 days. Ubooly’s average retention is at 35 days & growing.
  • Ubooly is an ever changing toy that your kids will want to continue playing with.

So, you decide to buy an Ubooly (it’s worth it). Here’s what happens:
First, you download the Ubooly app. After it installs (it’s large, so it might take a while), you can set up your children’s info (name and age) with Ubooly. There are various learning packs online that you can purchase for expanded learning for your children. They vary between topics and are built to accommodate different age groups. All of this content is written by elementary teachers and educators. Once you are ready, your child may enjoy Ubooly. Ubooly will learn the child’s name, favorite color, and other interests and will remember them!

So don’t forget to head to Ubooly’s Kickstarter, donate to a great product, and expand your child’s learning!

The Perfect Zulily Thanksgiving Outfit

0

This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for supporting UCM.

Usually by this time of October, I haven’t even started thinking about Halloween costumes yet, let alone Thanksgiving outfits, however, this year, I’m on top of it. I’ve already got Halloween costumes in the works and all I’m waiting for is for one package to arrive and then for Halloween to actually come so I can put the clothes on the kids. After working furiously the morning of Halloween and right up until it was time to leave to go trick-or-treating on my daughter’s costume, I decided to go low-key this year. Here is my perfect zulily Thanksgiving Outift.

I am in LOVE with this cute little dress!
A cute little necklace to go with the adorable dress.

And of course, some boots to keep those little legs warm.

This year has been a tough one for us, however, I am so grateful for my sweet family who gets me through each day. Without them, my life wouldn’t be half as exciting and, without my daughter, I couldn’t buy cute outfits like these to dress her up!

Rollick! Game & Giveaway

36

We recently had the opportunity to play the game “Rollick!” from The Game Chef.

The game Rollick! is based off of the well-known game Charades so the learning curve is short and quick which is nice, however, Rollick! has additional rules that make the game quick and fast-paced. The more people the better, however, my family and I played and there were only four of us. Well, really, there were only three of us with a three-year old who wanted to play, too.

The three of us played for about 45 minutes before we needed to put the kids to bed. We laughed a lot as two people tried to act out a “cactus” which just wasn’t working at all. Or the time my husband and I were pretending to be beavers except neither of us understood what the other was doing to act like a beaver. And there were many times as I was supposed to act out a word where I just stood there, trying to wrap my head around how to even go about acting it out. A couple of times I even used props which was so fun because for someone like me who has a hard time deciding how to act words, using props is a life savor!

Rollick! is for kids/people 10 years plus, however, my three-year old definitely thought it was fun to act out words, if we told her what to do. It is also recommended for at least six people, however, we made it work just fine with three people.

After, we also played “Long Story Short” which is also made by The Game Chef. Long Story Short reminds me of some of the games I used to play as a teenager because we loved making up stories or telling real stories and playing a game. Basically, one person tells a story and then everyone else has to rewrite the story as a headline, tweet, text, or comic strip/picture. You can retell the story differently, add parts to it, or adjust it however you want. I just felt like this game is so perfect for this day and age becuase of its use of text and tweet ideas. This game is for four to eight people (even though we only played with three) and is for those 13 years and older, however, I’m sure that younger people could play as well. We ended up playing for over an hour. I soaked it all in and am anxious to play again!

Giveaway: The Game Chef is giving away one game of Rollick! To enter, you must be 18 years or older and enter in the form below. Personal information is required but will only be used for giveaway purposes and will count as one entry. All others are optional. This giveaway will end on Monday, October 14, 2013 at 11:59 pm MDT.

Vivesque at Brick Canvas

1

Update: Brick Canvas AVEDA is now open and Vivesque is closed.

Vivesque is a salon at Brick Canvas located in the heart of Thanksgiving Point.

So the question is, do you enjoy being pampered? Because if so, this is seriously the place for you.

The receptionist wil get you something to drink as soon as you check in. Then you’ll be offered frozen grapes and chocolate-covered almonds. And they’re unlimited. I was there for over two hours and I was asked multiple times if I would like more.

I first had my hair done. My styist took time to learn about my hair and my habits with my hair and gave me suggestions throughout the time I was there to help me with my hair. However, after talking, she took me back to a room with sinks to wash my hair but it was the most relaxing room. Nice classical music was playing with a beautiful view and as I was taking all of this in, Rachel, my stylist, took time to give me a pressure point and facial massage. It was heaven.

Rachel did an amazing job with my hair. She taught me tricks to keep m flyaways down and made sure I understood all of the products that were going into my hair.

Afterwards, I enjoyed a little pampering with a pedicure which was fantastic.

There were a few things I really enjoyed about Vivesque: everyone was extremely friendly, you are treated as royalty, the salon is spacious and there is plenty of room between chairs, and I loved the little massage that is included with every cut.

For more information, visit Vivesque (their pricing is a little unique) and for general infromation about Vivesque and Brick Canvas, visit our original post.

Our Brick Canvas series is still going strong as we continue to bring you reviews about the various things Brick Canvas has to offer.

Congratulations to Emily S. who has won our Brick Canvas giveaway. She has already been emailed. We truly hope she enjoys her massage and one-month membership to Lyceum or Bikram Yoga.

Lyceum at Brick Canvas

1

I had never heard of Lyceum before but I love the idea of it. They train strength, endurance, and movement. They are about functional training. When you train here, you use TRX suspension trainers and kettlebells. Battle ropes are also used. I had only ever seen them on “Biggest Loser” so it was pretty interesting to use them.

Workouts at Lyceum usually consist of a good mix of kettlebell complexes, interval circuits, pure TRX classes and TABATA workouts.

When you first arrive to Brick Canvas, you can check in at the front desk and they will direct you where to go. From then on, you will have a scan card that you can scan at the front desk. If you have a lot of things, you can go to the locker room and use the free digital lockers to hold your things. Down the stairs you will find the Lyceum training area. The trainers are friendly and willing to help newbies learn the moves. Jesse, one of the main guys, helped me for five minutes to make sure that I wasn’t hurting myself as I did kettle bell swings and squats. Rachel, another instructor, helped make sure that I was using the suspension trainers correctly each time and helped me know how to not injure myself in them.

After your one-hour workout, you can head back up to the locker room to shower off and/or change. The women’s bathrooms also have hair dryers which is fantastic. Also, there are Q-Tips, just a random little perk of the locker room.

Just a warning, you will be sore after your workout, unless you are already fit and/or stretch a lot. After my first workout, the soreness started setting in just hours after class ended. The next morning, I couldn’t move my upper body. But I take it as a good sign that I was actually working out my body. Next time I’ll remember to stretch more.

Trish, the wife of Jesse, who is also an instructor, offers healthy living classes each month.
Dates: October 3, 10, 17 and 24 (Thursday)
Times: 9:30-11am or 7-8:30pm (The same content will be provided at both sessions)
Classes: Eat This, Not That
Cravings – Where do they come from? How to deal with them.
Stress Management (guest lecturer to be announced soon)
Cooking Class – Fall Favorites! (Trish is in charge…pumpkin will be on the menu.)
Class size is limited to 15 people so sign up quickly!

And by the way, in November, there will be one all-day event/class with speakers and lunch included so look forward to more information about that!

If you have wanted to try Lyceum, you may purchase any two 60-minute services at Sage Leaf Spa or more and you will get a free membership the studio. For more general information on Lyceum and Brick Canvas, read our original introduction post.

Sage Leaf Spa at Brick Canvas

1

Sage Leaf Spa at Brick Canvas offers a variety of massages, as well as some that are rare in Utah.

When you first arrive to Brick Canvas, after being checked in, they will give you a robe and slippers to change into in the locker room. Then you will have opportunity to relax in the waiting room.

This place is truly heavenly. The lighting is dimmed, there is a fireplace, and peaceful music is played. You can also enjoy ice water and snacks while you wait. Your esthetician will greet you there and show you to the next room.

From there, you get to enjoy your massage. I had the opportunity to try the Vichy Shower. The basic idea of it is that you lie on a bad with shower heads running water over you while you get a sugar or salt scrub. If you like relaxing in showers, this one is for you! After that, I was taken to a different room for rehydration of the skin. However, that is not your only option. They vary from massages to esthetics to facials, waxing, and other body treatments.

Don’t be scared of this one. They glide across your back like elegant ice skaters … without the skates.

After your treatment or massage, you may go back to the waiting room and relax. If you are ready to leave, you can go back to the locker room and change. There are showers with changing stalls as well so if you need to freshen up before going back to your life, you may.

During the month of October if you purchase any two 60 minute treatments you will receive one free month of unlimited classes at Bikram Yoga or Lyceum. The free membership can be transferred to someone else if you wish. This is a great value as you are receiving a $99 membership, from simply purchasing 2 spa treatments. You won’t want to miss out on this amazing special. For more basic info on Sage Leaf Spa and other places at Brick Canvas, read our original post.

Bikram Yoga at Brick Canvas Fitness

1

Have you ever attended a hot yoga or Bikram Yoga? The Bikram Yoga studio at Brick Canvas is kept at 105 degrees Fahrenheit and 40 percent humidity. Each class consist of 26 poses, each of them done twice, and the class lasts 90 minutes. By the end of the class, your body will have cleansed itself of many impurities and all of your organs will be massaged and functioning in peak condition. Bikram Yoga helps cleanse the body and has many healing benefits, both physically and mentally. It works every tendon, joint, and muscle in your body and does not leave you sore and uncomfortable. Instead, it releases stress and creates a sense of well-being. There are also many other benefits.

When you arrive to Brick Canvas for Bikram Yoga, you will be greeted by a very nice receptionist and then will walk back to the yoga studio. There, you will check in and may leave your things in cubbies between the double doors to the entrance of the yoga studio or you may leave your belongings in the locker room located nearby. In there are digital lockers that are available free for your use.

As a first timer, make sure you speak with the instructor beforehand. He or she will give you instructions on class, where to set up your yoga mat, and what to do if you are not sure what to do or if you need to leave the room. Make sure you bring a yoga mat, a full-length towel, a hand towel, and water.

Frequently asked questions that friends have asked me:
Was it uncomfortable with the heat? When you first walk in, it is obviously very warm. I would recommend arriving early so that you can lie on your mat and let your body start getting used to the heat. Once your body is used to it, I don’t think it is as bad.

Were you sweaty the whole time? Yes. Sweat drips off of you. Your clothes get soaked. Take a hand towel and some water. It will help.

Was it smelly in the room with all of the heat and sweat? No! I don’t know how they do it but I don’t think it smells bad at all.

Were you sore afterwards? No. Drinking a lot of water will help. But the workout helps stretch and strengthen your body and it does not hurt when done correctly.

Does time go by slowly? I don’t think it does. It is a long class but squeezing 26 poses in, doing each of them twice, with some resting, time seems to go by quickly.

What should I wear for such a hot room? Women seem to wear tank tops and shorts, men seem to wear just shorts. But honestly, it’s warm, so the less, the better. One man that did Bikram Yoga in California said that everyone wears just underwear to Bikram Yoga. Here in Utah, I think women cover up more than that. But if you wear underwear type clothing, you won’t look out of place. 🙂

For the month of October, Bikram Yoga at Brick Canvas has some great things going on, including $3 for their 3 pm workout on Saturdays. This is a fantastic deal!

For more information about Bikram Yoga, Brick Canvas, and specials, visit our introduction post.

SLC Jingle Bell Run 2013

0

On Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the Gateway Mall, the SLC Jingle Bell Run will be held! For discounted tickets, use the code “UTAHMOMS” to get $5 off regular priced tickets. But hurry! There are only 50 so you will want to sign up soon!

Saturday, December 7, 2013
Gateway Mall –Grand Hall

The Jingle Bell Run/Walk is the Arthritis Foundation’s nationwide holiday run and walk event to raise both awareness and funds to fight arthritis – the number one cause of disability in the United States. Participants are provided with jingle bells to tie to their shoe laces and are encouraged to dress in holiday costumes – making the Jingle Bell Run/Walk a festive holiday tradition for individuals, families, companies and community teams. We are really striving to make this event a Salt Lake City tradition and give it the foundation to grow exponentially each year!

This year’s Jingle Bell Run will not only include the timed 5K event, but a Kids’ 1K Race with Rudolph, an Elf Village(with kid’s crafts and games), a Health and Wellness Expo, and a Jingle Bell Boutique. Local musical groups will be performing, prizes given away throughout the day, and even a special visit from Santa himself!

JBR Shoes Spokane

The fund raising aspect of the Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis is driven largely by the participating individuals. Participants are asked, but not required, to raise a minimum of $100 to help support the mission of the Arthritis Foundation. The creation of Jingle Bell Run/Walk Teams is also an integral part of fund raising. Families, friends and co-workers join together to walk in honor of a teammate with arthritis while also raising funds as a team. The Arthritis Foundation provides both staff and online support to those raising funds through the creation of their own fund raising web page. Corporate sponsors are also secured to help raise funds for the Jingle Bell Run/Walk, but to also help raise awareness for the #1 cause of disability in the United States.

In most situations being #1 is a reason to celebrate – however, when it comes to arthritis many aren’t celebrating. Over 50 million Americans, 1 in 5 adults have arthritis, and nearly 300,000 children age 17 and younger live with arthritis. Arthritis affects people of all ages, races and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Arthritis Foundation is the only nationwide, non-profit health organization helping people take greater control of arthritis and their lives. Thanks to events like the Jingle Bell Run/Walk, individual support and corporate support, we are able to fund research, health education and government advocacy efforts to improve the lives of those living with arthritis. These services include, but are not limited to:

• Hosting of a number one ranked comprehensive arthritis web site, www.arthritis.org
• Management of a toll free information helpline
• Creation and distribution of nearly 100 consumer educational brochures, booklets and books
• Publishing of Arthritis Today, the Arthritis Foundation’s bi-monthly consumer magazine
• Hosting of water and land-based exercise classes, self-help courses and support groups
• Development and management of physician referral lists
• Extensive funding for arthritis research
• KAT Programs (Kids And Teens Get Arthritis Too
• Federal and state advocacy efforts to ensure rights and access to care for all people with arthritis
