Campbell’s Address Your Heart

0

Health is foremost on people’s minds, keeping your family in tip top shape can be a challenge in these busy times. Campbell’s Soup wants you to “Address Your Heart” with Heart Healthy Tips, recipes and more!

Being Heart Healthy is very important to me. I studied Exercise Science in college which actually doesn’t mean that I exercised a lot in college. Many people think when I mention that I studied Exercise Science that I got to do all of the fun fitness classes and sports, but it was exactly opposite. I spent a lot of my time in labs and classes learning about anatomy, physics, chemistry, and biology. Yes, it was torture. But what I really took from all of the pain and suffering is how amazing our bodies are and how important it is to keep them healthy. One way that I encourage my family to stay healthy is to eat healthy and get plenty of time to play outside.

My family loves to eat and so it is important to make sure they are getting good foods into their body before reaching for the chips and cookies. Here are 5 of my favorite recipes from the “American Heart Association Certified Recipes:

Campbell wants us to be Heart Healthy and is even offering some great coupons so we can get some great deals on healthy foods. Visit AddressYourHeart.com to get heart-healthy tips, including 21 Campbell’s recipes that are certified by the AHA and product coupons, as well as Facebook.com/campbellskitchen for the latest Campbell’s recipes and offers.

National School Breakfast Week & ITSMeals at Provo School District

0

“We all know that mornings can be crazy busy and some kids just aren’t hungry before school. But, this is a no brainer — literally! Without fuel for morning classes, students cannot focus, concentrate and learn. At home or school (or even in a car or bus), breakfast changes everything. Any breakfast is better than no breakfast and a bowl of whole grain cereal with milk and fruit can actually be a good source of key nutrients. Even if your kids eat at home in the morning, your support for school breakfast is critical for those children who need it. One kid who is too hungry to learn can disrupt an entire classroom.” -“6 Secrets Every Parent and School Should Know” by Dayle Hayes MS, RD.

The ITSMeals at Provo School District is helping make parents more aware of school breakfast that is served at all of their 18 schools every morning.  They provide a nutrition-packed start to the children’s mornings and we want to remind you that breakfast is essential to the start of every single day.

Tips for Preventing and Recovering from an Injury

This article was supposed to be about training for a 5K. Unfortunately, a day into training, I overworked my Achilles tendon and developed tendinitis. Let me start off by telling you, I’m not much of a runner. Because I tend to walk on the outsides of my feet (a lovely little condition that Google informs me is called underpronation) I’ve never been able to run for a sustained amount of time without getting shin splints.

Really, this means that I get very little exercise. During my undergrad, when I lived a mile from campus and walked everywhere, this was okay. My healthy living was eating light and walking to and from school. But, after I graduated and got a desk job, things quickly changed. I’ve gained a lot of weight in the last year, and since I’ve always wanted to be better at running, I decided to start training for a 5K on a treadmill. Luckily, my office has a Sole Treadmill, so this shouldn’t have been too hard, right?

Where I Went Wrong
Enter day one of training. I’d googled a training schedule for a 5K and decided I could plausibly run one in about a month and a half. And, luckily for me, my office is also equipped with a couple Sole treadmills. Unluckily for me, by the time I actually convinced myself to get on the treadmill, I’d forgotten what the schedule told me to do on the first day of training.

My brain: I’ll run half a mile and then walk half a mile, and I’ll do that for thirty minutes. Thirty minutes is not too much time, right?

Wrong.

Well, not entirely wrong. But I hadn’t considered two things. One, I hadn’t truly gone for a run in about…ten years. And, I’d forgotten to warm up. Not forgotten, really, since I actually didn’t know I needed to warm up before using the treadmill. I thought that’s what the treadmill was for. Did I mention I’m not into running?

The actual run wasn’t bad, but toward the end I noticed the tendon behind my right heel was sore. By the time I stopped and sat down to actually start stretching, my tendon was swollen and burning. But at the time, I literally thought it was just workout pain. Oh yeah! Rub some dirt in it! I thought I was awesome and all worky-outy. Until the next day, when it was still sore.

Taking Care of the Problem so You Can Keep on Running Like a Total Bad A

Tip #1: Rest Up
When I went to have it checked out, the first thing my doctor recommended was rest. Great, no working out, after just a day of working out? I wanted to laugh at the irony, but I also really wanted to get into shape. Ultimately, what I needed to do was switch from high-impact exercise (like running) to low-impact exercise (like swimming, biking, and elliptical training) for a few months, and build up to longer lengths of time. “Rest” for my body just meant not pushing it in ways that could cause injury.

Tip #2: Ice and Ibuprofen
I also had to ice the tendon for twenty minutes at a time and take ibuprofen when it was sore, and work on stretching out my calf muscles. There were two basic exercises my doctor gave me to do, which you’ve all probably tried before anyway.

Tip #3: Stretch
The Strange Push Up
The first involves simply leaning against a wall with your hands in front of you and extending your right leg straight behind you, heel on the ground. Your left leg should be bent in front of you, putting slight pressure on the achilles tendon in your right leg. Push your hips toward the wall and hold for ten seconds to stretch out your calf and tendon. Sort of like a strange push up, but against the wall. Repeat on each leg twenty times.
The Step Bounce
The second exercise involves standing on the edge of a step with just the front part of your feet on the step. Dip your heels down and come back up again, slowly, twenty times. Be sure not to go too quickly with this exercise, and hold onto a railing if you need to. Remember, you just want to stretch these muscles, not injure them further. (Also, I totally made up the name for this and all previous stretches mentioned, just so you know).

Preventing the Problem in the First Place So You Can Keep on Running Like a Bad A
So, you guessed it, achilles tendonitis is caused by a sudden increase in exercise (read: running when you haven’t run in years) and tight calf muscles (read: serious lack of stretching).

Tips #1: Stretch (Again)
To avoid any problems with your achilles tendon (and a variety of other problems) stretch when you wake up, and before and after you exercise. Remember when you’re stretching that’s exactly what you’re supposed to do: stretch. You don’t want to be in even more pain from stretching out. You just want to warm up.

Tip #2: Get a Good Pair of Shoes
You may also want to invest in a good pair of running shoes with arch support, especially if you’re having problems with your achilles tendon. This part is obviously trial and error. Find the best pair that works for you. Whatever you do, don’t run with shoes that are really worn, as that can lead to further damage (trust me on that one).

No Matter What, Keep Going
Don’t let injuries keep you from reaching your fitness goals. Warm up before they happen, and don’t be discouraged if they do happen. Just take it easy and try something else. Even though I may not be able to get on the treadmill for another month or so, I’ve been having a fun time finding out what other machines work well for me. Okay, “fun” is a stretch, but it has been helpful. Mixing it up keeps me from getting bored (I am told by my good friend Google this is called cross-training). No matter what, just keep going. You’ll only reach your goals if you try.

Review: EEME – A Fun Resource for Teaching Kids Electronics

0
utah valley moms

EEME makes hands-on project kits paired with an online video curricula to teach 7-12 year old kids electronics. The goal is to nurture the curiosity & critical thinking kids need for the science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) opportunities of tomorrow.

I tried the first of five project kits and it was fantastic. After receiving the box, I signed up, it sent me an email, I clicked the link, and I was in my first lesson! It walked me through each step and helped me understand what was going on.

Jack is the owner of EEME. He began this huge project because after becoming a new dad, he wanted to instill education at a deeper level than the other toys that he was seeing on the market. He wants kids to ask “why?” He wants kids to be excited about learning. And I think he’s done it.

I am so impressed with EEME. It really does encourage curiosity, communication, and critical thinking. I wonder if I had something like this in my youth if I would have become even more fascinated with electronics. I mean, it’s interesting but I had no reason to be excited about it – unless I really thought reading chapters in my textbook was exciting … it wasn’t.

We received the Builder pro version of Project Genius Light. It includes the top enclosure cover, thumb screws and nuts. The Builder basic does not include those but it has the same exact educational offering.

You can subscribe to the EEME 5-month subscription box and sign up for free electronic lessons in your email.

Karen Johnson Memorial 5K/10K + Discount

1

On the afternoon of October 19, 2010, a Cyprus High girl was traveling in her truck when some balloons in the back of her car shifted. It was her birthday. As she attempted to clear the balloons out of her view, her truck drifted to the side of the road and hit Karen Johnson, a woman who was biking along the side of the road. Karen passed away on the way to the hospital.

Karen’s family described Karen, an electrical engineer as a world traveler, an avid bike rider who did 100-, 200- and 500-mile rides and even built her own bicycle. She was a graduate of the University of Utah and was active in the community.

In her honor, a race is being conducted by Cirris Systems, who was a beloved employee that tragically lost her life that day. Karen actively participated in the community, delivering Meals on Wheels and with the Assistance League of Salt Lake. The proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to the Assistance League of Salt Lake.

The Karen Johnson Memorial 5K/10K will be held at Redwood Park, 3060 Lester Street, in West Valley City at 9 am on March 29, 2014.

Review: Create Your Own Money-Saving Adventure

1

Over two years ago, my husband and I decided to make a serious decision about our lives.  I was new to being a stay-at-home mom and was just starting this blog.  We were serious about buying a home of our own.  Our little girl was only about one year old and I knew another little babe was coming to our family within the next year.  My husband made plenty of money.  It was stable. It was secure.  Yet here we were, in this “perfect” little life of ours, and we decided that my husband should follow his heart and his dreams, quit his job, and create his own businesses.

It was depressing – not something we wanted to share with anyone.  We were self-sufficient and didn’t want anyone to think any differently of us.  We didn’t want family to “help” us or to give us any sort of slack.  My employer who I had just quit from a few months back graciously hired me back but I made just enough to cover our rent and utilities – certainly not enough to actually live off of.  I immediately learned how to start saving money and Freebies2Deals.com was one of the places I turned to first.

Melea, the owner of Freebies2Deals.com, has done an excellent job of keeping all of her followers and readers informed as to where the best deals are and how to go about getting them.  Lucky for us, she has just released a book, Create Your Own Money-Saving Adventure (The Standard Edition) (Volume 1).

I sat down with the book while watching a television show (this is also how I studied which might explain some of my poor grades) and nearly finished the book in that one sitting.  I was fascinated and it took me back to those days right after we decided to make our huge life-changing decision.  Melea reviews all of the start up concepts of couponing, as well as all the problems that can come with couponing, like different store policies and when a cashier won’t honor the coupon.  My personal favorite part of the book is the end where she talks about other things other than groceries.  She talks about budgeting and how to save on many aspects of life.

Melea stresses that you can create your own money-saving adventure.  Not everyone needs to save money the exact same way.  And that’s the great part about this book.  She gives you what you need to know about saving money and then you get to decide how you would like to save money.

This book is a great resource for beginners and seasoned couponers alike.  It provides the ins and outs of couponing and serves as a great reminder that there are always more ways we can save.  Melea has done an excellent job of making her readers feel empowered to save more money!

Now through February 26th, 2014, the price of the book will only be $7.00. (Reg $12.99)

**If you are an Amazon Prime member, the book will ship completely free. If not, Create Your Own Money-Saving Adventure (The Standard Edition) (Volume 1) ships free once you hit $35 in one order.

Utah Valley Moms was given a copy of this book to review. All opinions are our own. This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for you support.
