Winter Planning

0

Author: Whitney Hollingshead

When the weather station reported that today’s high was in the 70’s or 80’s, the last thing on your mind is creating a to do list for winter.  In fact, getting ready for winter a few months in advance seems a little crazy; however, you can take advantage of some great benefits if you make good use of the coming weeks.  Here are some key reason to act now:

  1. Preparation saves time, money, & frustration.

Stock up now on the basics that you will need to tackle winter tasks.  Do you have a good snow shovel?  If you want until the first snow, odds are you will be competing with everyone else who needs a shovel and the local stores may not have the stock to meet the sudden demand.  Purchase a snow shovel now.  If you prefer to buy items online, you have plenty of time to wait for the item to be shipped to you and you can most likely snag a great deal too.

Consider purchasing an ice scraper and snow brush for each of your vehicles.  Again, you will most likely find a better selection in your local stores now.  Check online to get the best price.

Does every member of the family have a good coat, hat, gloves, boots, and a scarf?  Make a list of the items your family needs and start watching for these items to go on sale.  Don’t buy them at full price now, but start watching closely for a great deal on anything you need.

Think back to last winter.  Are there items you wished you had, but still have not purchased?  Include these items in the family budget for the coming months.  Consider everything from bedding to cookware to holiday decorations.

Focus on any indoor or outdoor activity that needs to be completed and would be especially difficult to complete when the weather is cold.  For example, you can hang the Christmas lights now and wait until later to turn them on.  Make sure your garage is cleaned out so that you can park your cars inside, etc.

  1. Discounted skiing/snowboarding season passes are available now.

If any member of your family loves to ski or snowboard, you need to act now to get the best possible deal on a season pass to a local resort.  Many resorts run special promotions in the late summer and early fall for discounted season passes.  If you can’t find any information online about the resorts nearest you, call and ask about season pass discounts.  Several resorts even offer specific promotions for season passes for kids.  Going a couple of times during the winter season typically pays for the full cost of the season pass, making season passes a very attractive option if anyone in your family plans to go multiple times this coming winter.

  1. You can take advantage of discounted gear and better customer service.

If you are planning on participating in any kind of outdoor winter activity, odds are someone in your family will need some new gear this year.  You can find deals at the local stores and online for winter gear now.  For example, if your child is begging for a new snowboard, you should check out this Never Summer snowboard currently listed online at 40% off.

Another key reason to start scoping out the gear you need is that you can take advantage of more attentive salespeople.  During the busy winter season you will have a hard time finding people to patiently listen to your questions and help you find the gear you need.  If you utilize their services now, you will appreciate the extra attention.

  1. Buying your holiday plane tickets now will save you money and reduce stress.

If you are planning to travel for any of the winter holidays, get your plane tickets purchased now.  As the holidays are the busiest time of year for air travel, the sooner you purchase your tickets, the better.  If you wait, you will have limited flight options and end up paying more for each ticket.

To save some additional money, consider the following tips for airline travel:

Look at all of the airports within a reasonable distance of your destination.  Flying into an airport an hour or two away, may end up saving you a lot of money.  Of course, you will need transportation from this location.  If a friend or family member is willing to provide a ride, you will be in great shape.  If not, make sure you can rent a car and still enjoy a significant savings over flying into another airport.

Test out multiple dates for both ends of your trip if possible.  Leaving a day or two earlier than you originally planned may save you more than you expect.  Don’t assume flying on certain dates will be more or less expensive.  Do your research and make sure you know you are getting the best possible deal.

Research multiple airline websites, as well as various travel websites to look for the best deal.  You may find a great deal on a travel website, only to find that booking directly through the airline’s website is actually cheaper.

Check on additional fees before you book, including baggage fees.  Consolidate your luggage to reduce baggage fees.  Cut down the amount of stuff you plan to take on the plane, and have family members share luggage as much as possible.

By following these tips, you can save time and money this coming winter.  Act now to ensure that your winter is as enjoyable and stress free as possible.

Fit Made Fun Party with LeapFrog & Clif

0

LeapFrog declared September 6th a Fit Made Fun day.  LeapFrog wanted to set a new world record on Fit Made Fun Day to get kids moving and having fun while doing it.  We got to try out the latest LeapFrog activity trackers called LeapBands.  LeapBands tracks kids’ movements an suggest 50 different fun activities and challenges to them to keep them moving.

Utah Valley Moms received free products in order to host the LeapFrog and CLIF Kid sponsored MommyParty. The opinions expressed here are our own.

My kids and their friends have had a blast this past week playing with the LeapBands.  I find my daughter randomly dancing, hopping, and doing all sorts of fun things at the most random times with her LeapBand.

One of my favorite features of the LeapBand is that the adult can set school times and sleep times which will stop the LeapBand from playing during those times.  The first night she was playing and suddenly the screen went to just a clock showing what time it was.  When my daughter and her friend noticed that neither of theirs was working and came running to me to get it to work, I realized that it had stopped because it was bed time!  And oddly enough, they were both okay with that!

Child & Family EyeCare Center Special Presentation

Join the Child & Family EyeCare Center tonight at the Orem Public Library (58 N. State St.) for a special presentation with Find Your Focus Foundation about the importance of good visual skills for learning. Event starts at 6:30 pm. There will be a short presentation followed by question-answer sessions and free screenings for binocular vision disorders. Please share this with anyone you know that has a child who may be struggling in school.

25 percent of school kids have vision problems; many go undiagnosed and untreated. That can leave too many kids behind, wasting years of education and money. Requiring comprehensive eye exams can help more kids succeed academically and graduate.

It’s an investment we can’t afford not to make.

Don’t delay scheduling your child’s exam. Call us today for an appointment. 801-492-6393

Learning for Life

0

Author: Alyssa Craig

Education in the most formal sense of the word typically ends after years of lectures, homework, essays, and exams. We receive a piece of paper indicating we have fulfilled the requirements set out and we are sent into the world to chase our dreams. But the truth is, education can, and should be, a lifelong endeavor and should not be limited to our youth. There are many ways to keep learning throughout our lives that could enhance our careers and enrich our lives.

Here are just a few of the many opportunities you can take advantage of to continue learning throughout your life:

Distance Learning – Many colleges and universities now offer courses through their distance learning programs. What this means is the classes you take will most likely be online, rather than in a classroom. For adults, distance learning has many advantages:

    • Flexibility in both time and location since it is all online

    • An opportunity to learn the most current information available

    • Allows the learner to go at their own pace

Distance learning programs are a great option for working adults looking to advance in their careers or enter a new field.

  • Community Classes – Have you ever thought “I would really love to learn French” or “I wish I were a better cook.” There is no reason why you should not pursue learning in a new subject matter. Community colleges and community centers offer a variety of classes to the general public such as art, foreign languages, photography, cooking, and music. If there is a skill you wish to improve or acquire, consider looking into what your community college or community center has to offer.

  • Craft and Home Improvement Store Courses – If you have a hobby or a project you are wanting to learn how to do, many craft and home improvement stores offer workshops and classes to the general public. Check their schedules for a chance to learn something new or improve a skill you already have.

  • Private Lessons – While this does take away the social factor a community or public class could offer, private lessons are available on a wide variety of subjects and skills. Search the internet or ask friends and family members for recommendations if there is a talent you would like to develop. This gives you a bit more variety of classes to take, rather than depending solely on what your local college or community center offer.

Continuing learning as an adult and participating in such classes leads to a lot of benefits such as an opportunity to get out of the house and meet new people, gaining more information on a passion you already have, or even inspiring the children in your life to improve their education. In addition, learning throughout your life can have positive effects on your mental and emotional health, too.

Mental Health

Research has shown it is healthy for our brains to have continued mental stimulation throughout our lives. In fact, lifelong learning has been proven to slow the decline of cognitive function we all experience with age. It can also help decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia. More specifically, it has also been shown that learning a second language can help increase your attention, improve your memory and even lead to physical growth in parts of your brain!

 Emotional Health

Beyond having a healthy brain, continued learning can help you to enjoy better overall emotional health. When we learn something new, our brains adapt to store this new information. This can translate directly to adapting in our lives. If we are used to adjusting to changes in information, we will be that much more prepared for changes in our lives. As difficulties present themselves, having the skill set of learning new things will help us to conquer challenges in life, as explained in this article. Having a new hobby or skillset can also assist in reducing stress, offer an opportunity to connect with others with similar interests, and lead to the development of fun relationships. Overall, this will lead to improved self esteem and an all inclusive sense of self fulfillment.

So whether you are looking to become more marketable in your career, take up a new hobby, or just do something fun and healthy for your brain, actively look for ways to continue to learn throughout your life. The benefits far outway any cost and will help you to live a full, well-rounded life.
