Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Presents Legends Review

0

Utah Valley Moms had the chance to go see Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey presents Legends on opening night and honestly, it has been the best one yet.  The acrobats were amazing.  The animals were exciting.  And the entire presentation kept my children entertained and on the edge of their seats.  In fact, with almost all of the acrobats, my husband and I held our breath most of the time.  It was incredible!

Utah Valley Moms is a Feld Family Ambassador, and in exchange for UVM’s time and efforts in attending shows and reporting my opinion within this blog, as well as keeping you advised of the latest discount offers, Feld Entertainment has provided UVM with complimentary tickets to Feld shows and opportunities to attend private Feld pre-Show events.

BYU museum to hold Amazing Race and train junior curators

1

This “Amazing Race” will be a great event for families.  This event is free for kids 5-11 and their families!

Here’s your chance to go behind the scenes and be a museum curator for a day. BYU’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures is hosting two exciting events on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., for students, children and families.

College students and young adults will enjoy competing in the Museum’s second annual Amazing Race: Campus Edition. At the same time, children are invited to join us with their families at the museum as Junior Curators.

The Amazing Race and Junior Curator programs are being held in conjunction with the Smithsonian’s nation-wide Museum Day Live! celebration, an annual event that offers free admission to participating museums across the country.

Amazing Race: Campus Edition

For the Amazing Race: Campus Edition, teams of college students will sprint to the Museum’s many exhibits across BYU campus, competing in challenges. This year’s race will feature new locations and challenges with prizes for the fastest teams.

College-aged young adults can participate in the race by signing up in teams of four to seven at the Museum (located at 100 E 700 N in Provo) from Sept. 17-25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Tuesday and Thursday until 7 p.m. A registration fee of $10 per team will be required.

Junior Curators

Kids can participate in the Museum’s first Junior Curator program for children, ages 5-11, and their families. The kids will have fun digging for artifacts, creating a beaded bracelet and making a replica of a Native American wallet. Throughout the event, kids will get to act as curators as they complete an activity booklet, experience the museum’s exhibits, give mini tours to friends and parents and design their very own take-home display for their artifacts. The Junior Curators event is free and no registration is necessary.

BYU’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures is the University’s museum of archaeology and ethnology. An integral part of the Museum’s work is to provide professional museum experience for BYU students. Current exhibits include “Nuchu: Voices of the Ute People” and “Monuments of Faith: Provo’s First Tabernacle.” The Museum is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

New Outpatient Building for Primary Children’s Hospital

0

Utah Valley Moms had the opportunity to preview the new building for Primary Children’s Hospital.

Primary Children’s Hospital is an absolutely incredible place.  It’s hard for me to hear any story about Primary Children’s without welling up with tears because of the extraordinary way that they work there.

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are our own.

Aerial of Eccles Building

One thing I loved as I passed through the new building is the colors.  Hospitals can be so scary and so monotone with those colorful yet old-looking chairs.  But not at Primary Children’s.  The whole place is filled with relaxing, soothing colors to help direct people but also to make it fun for the children.  Each area of the hospital is colored a different color and with some fun drawings on the floor to help with direction as well.

Clinic Waiting Area - Level 3
Colors!
Clinic Hallway
Pictures on the floor to help kids “discover” as well as help with direction.

Other things I love:

  • children’s play area for siblings who have a brother or sister who has an appointment – volunteers are staffed to play with the children – siblings can be there for up to two hours unless there is a special circumstance
  • touch-screen games
  • huge jumbo games in waiting areas
  • tubing system for prescriptions and other things to quickly pass between buildings (reminds me of a drive-thru bank)
  • benches in exam rooms instead of two chairs to fit more kids
  • brand new kitchen with amazing food – the cooks have done an excellent job
  • made-to-order food in the kitchen to give a different feeling instead of the normal hospital food experience … I might go eat there without kids at the hospital
  • the sky bridge is temperature sensitive which means that windows will automatically open at certain temperatures to allow air flow

This will be the first expansion for the hospital in 22 years.  It will have unfinished areas to allow room for growth.  And in case you are not sure as to whether you want to take your children to Primary Children’s Hospital, it’s ranked among the top in the nation for children’s hospitals.

Personally, I am so grateful for all of the amazing employees that work at Primary Children’s Hospital.  They truly put children first and are willing to do what they can to help every patient, even despite whether a parent can pay for the bill to treat their child or not.  This place is incredible.

Master Muffler

0

I don’t know about you but servicing my cars is one of my least favorite things to do.  I think it is so important to find a mechanic that you enjoy going to and can trust.  I want someone that can get your car fixed quickly and won’t try and over charge you or tell you that you need to fix more than you need.  I was really excited to have an opportunity to try Master Muffler so see if they are a place you could feel confident taking your car to.

I took my car to the Master Muffler shop in Provo to get the oil changed. Ed, the owner, was very accommodating and he took the time to explain the different oil change services they provided and respected the choice I made. I knew there were some other things on our car that we would need to fix in the near future and they took the time to take me back and show me exactly what the problems looked like and made sure I understood the different options I had for fixing them.  They didn’t pressure me into getting them fixed right then but Ed gave me several different quote options for fixing the problems they encountered if I did decide to get them fixed through them.  They spent time making sure I understood everything well.   I left feeling very informed of what my car needed and when I should get things replaced.  I would feel comfortable taking my car to them in the future and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a quality establishment to take your car to.

So if you need a place to have your car serviced check out Master Muffler.

Utah Valley Moms received a gift card to Master Muffler in exchange for this post.  All opinions are our own.

Refashioning and Thrifting for Kids #tagsthrift

1

Refashioning and thrifting for kids is something that is actually easy for me to do.  As for me and my clothes, I’m more of a go-to-the-store-and-just-buy-it kind of girl.  But for my daughter, I can see potential in a lot of things.  I had the opportunity to stop by TAG’s, a new local thrift store last night and didn’t remember that I should thrift for my daughter instead of me.  So feeling not creative and unmotivated, I chose a couple of items.  It wasn’t until I was walking out of the store that I thought of my daughter and realized that I might be able to make something that she loves.

Utah Valley Moms received two items in exchange for this post. All opinions are our own.

But first, let me tell you about my daughter.  She is a fashion girl to the core.  I don’t know where she got her fashion sense but it’s strong and she’s very precise about the things she wants to wear.  Every now and then I’ll have her pick me out an outfit and she’ll tell me daily how she feels about what I’m wearing.  So going to a store to pick out, essentially fabric, so that I can recreate something for her scared me a bit.  But when I got home and showed her, she was really excited.  So excited, in fact, that she gave me specific instructions about how to wake her up in the middle of the night when I finished her outfit.

So last night I started unstitching all of the threads I didn’t want and started imagining how I was going to do what I wanted to do.  Because here’s the thing – I have no idea how to actually sew.  No one has ever taught me.  Tutorials make no sense to me.  And following instructions is one of the hardest things for me.  So I usually just sit down at the sewing machine and go at it.  … It’s a little scary.

This is the original dress.
This is an original dress.

Once everything was broken down, I realized that it might actually fit me.  So why not try it on?

Well, after taking everything a part and redoing a couple of things, I created this whole new outfit for my daughter.  She loves it.  I’m happy with it.  I’m going to call it a win.

The headband is taken from the shirt part of the dress.  The scarf is from the grey dress.  And the skirt was fitted and changed to make a new skirt.
