Splash Pad Series: Pioneer Park, Provo

0

I had plans to not get wet when we went to the Pioneer Park splash pad in Provo, so I wore long jeans (despite it being 80 degrees at 10 am). By the time we left, I was soaked from my feet all the way up to my waist. I didn’t expect to love this splash pad as much as I did … next time, I’m not wearing long jeans to the splash pad. I also only got one photo of the splash pad because we were having too much fun.

My favorite thing about the Pioneer Park, Provo splash pad is the water layout, how much water comes out of each hole, and the little shower of rain falling from the building just to the north of the splash pad area. The water was so much fun to play in despite there not being any water toys. I should have taken more photos so you could see the water layout but since I was having too much fun, you’ll probably just have to check it out for yourself..

My least favorite thing about the splash pad was how far away the restrooms were from the splash pad. It takes less than a minute to walk to them, however, I enjoy when the restrooms are right next to the splash pad.

Other things about the splash pad: There is no parking lot so when it’s busy at the park, which by 10:30 am, there was only one or two parking spots left closest to the park, it’s a bit of a walk. There is only one pavilion to provide shade but most parents and guardians seemed to be enjoying the sun with camping chairs and sitting on the rocks and flower bed ledges that surround the splash pad area. There is an enclosed playground area right next to the splash pad which is nice because it is so close to Center Street and 500 West, both very busy streets. I was worried about the splash pad area being close to the busy streets as well, however, once we started playing, I realized it wasn’t as dangerous as I had thought it was. The splash pad also turns off every hour for 15 minutes.

Smashburger Opening

0

UCM had the great opportunity to attend a Smashburger opening in Midvale, Utah this past week.

I had the Spicy Baja Smash & Smash fries. It was nicely presented with the jalapenos around the avocado on the top of the burger made it look like a flower. The smash fries with rosemary were fantastic.

Dan, my husband, had the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger Smash and said it was excellent & loved the BBQ sauce. He also had the haystack onions and didn’t like those as well as regular onion rings; he said that since they were so thin, he felt like they absorbed more grease.

We had samples of the milkshake while waiting outside which was good. I liked the location in the Midvale shopping center. The restaurant had high ceilings. The staff was quite attentive. I thought it was a little pricey coming in at $21.61 for 2 burgers, 2 fries and 2 sodas, but Smashburger has a reputation of being a little upscale.

Overall, Smashburger is a great restaurant with incredibly yummy food.

If you don’t want to travel up to Midvale to visit the new location, Utah County has one in Orem at University Parkway and State Street.

Thank you to Smashburger for allowing us to visit you in Midvale!

Splash Pad Series: Shops at Riverwoods

0

We stopped by The Shops at Riverwoods’ splash pad in Provo last night and as always, the kids there were having a blast. There are two splash pads at the Riverwoods – one on the west side near the Provo Beach Resort and Apricot Lane Boutique and one on the east side near La Jolla Groves and The Manor, right next to the pavilion.

The east side splash pad.

My favorite thing about the Provo Shops at Riverwoods splash pad is that there are two splash pad areas. The west side splash pad is for everyone. There are smaller arches are on the outside so the younger kids seem to have a blast venturing out to those and running back to parents, whereas, the older kids run through all the water in the middle. The east side splash pad only has the arches which is really nice for the younger children. Usually there are only young kids at the east side splash pad which is really nice for all the young ones and it’s a safer place for those who are just learning to walk, like my son was a couple weeks ago.

My least favorite thing about this splash pad is the lack of fun toys. They added in the one quite a while later after it was built so I’m hoping they will continue to add to it. However, in situations like these, bringing your own water toys from home works great. Cups and bowls, for the little ones, seem to be great toys as well. Speaking of toys, you can currently also buy water toys from Apricot Lane for $1-3.

Other things about the splash pad: There are no nearby restrooms. The public restrooms are between the two splash pads on the outside of the shops, so not very convenient. There is plenty of space to sit near the splash pads, whether it be on the flower bed ledges, the picnic tables at the Provo Beach Resort, or at the tables in front of Malawi’s Pizza. Shade, on the other hand, is limited. A few trees make up the nearby shade for both sides, while the tables (if you’re lucky enough to get one) with umbrellas are on the west side. There are some food options right next to the splash pads if you’re hungry.

Splash Pad Series: Spanish Fork

0

Spanish Fork’s splash pad is very simple yet kids seem to have a blast at it.

spanish fork splash pad

My favorite thing about the Spanish Fork splash pad is how much water was coming out of the ground for the kids to splash in. It is not pictured in this photo very well, but the water pressure, most of the time, was fairly high and there was a lot of water to get you soaking wet, quite fast.

My least favorite thing about the splash pad is the lack of water toys. It is a simple splash pad.

Other things about the splash pad: There is no shade around the splash pad. Luckily when I went, my friend brought her huge umbrella which created enough shade for the six of us, however, unless you bring your own shade, there is no shade. The restrooms are next to the splash pad and although the floors were really slick from all the water on them (my daughter fell three times), they were clean and nice. There is at least one picnic table close by, however, no shade over it. There are no benches surrounding the splash pad, however, you can sit on a small, grassy hill, a flat area of grass, or the cement. There is also a really nice, fun park just northwest of the splash pad with shade covering the park and two shaded pavilions right next to it.

Splash Pad Series: Alpine

The Alpine splash pad has a great assortment of water toys that splash water. It also has a fence with only two openings, both away from the side facing the street, which is a great feature.

My favorite thing about the Alpine splash pad is that it has a fence around it for the little kids and it has a lot of water toys.

My least favorite thing about the splash pad is the water timer. It’s nice that it has a timer so that the water only stays on a little while and doesn’t run as much when there is no one there, however, I felt like the water turned off fairly quickly – but maybe that’s just because we were having so much fun that time went quickly.

Other things about the splash pad: there is a pavilion right next to the splash pad to provide plenty of shade and a place to eat. The restrooms are right next to the splash pad as well, however, there was no soap which was kind of gross. The playground is fairly close to the splash pad. There are many benches around the splash pad area, however, because there is a fence surrounding the water area, it’s not easy to get to your child quickly if you need to. The whole park area is beautiful and seems to be well kept.

Splash Pad Series: Highland

This morning we went to Highland’s splash pad. It was windy and I was very disappointed that the actual splash pad portion was not currently running. Kids assured me, however, that water came out of the ground there though. 🙂

To the left is the splash pad, the right is the river.

My favorite thing about this splash pad is its uniqueness. The river, the water spraying out of the rocks, and also an actual splash pad makes this area very unique.

My least favorite thing about the Highland splash pad is how fast the water is running in the river.  I could never let my one-year old play in the river without holding onto him.  The water was one to two inches high and going so quickly that I would be afraid of drowning.  However, for the older children, the river is great and not a problem at all!

Other things about this splash pad:  The water to the actual splash pad wasn’t working.  I’m sure it turns on later but we were there at 11 am and it wasn’t on yet.  There are benches around the area and a few small trees but get there early if you want shade.  It seems to be a popular commodity at this splash pad.  The restrooms were nearby and somewhat dirty, but functioning.  There is plenty of parking around the splash pad area.

Splash Pad Series: Eagle Mountain

0

Last week I decided that I would visit all of the major splash pads here in Utah County and document it for all of you here on UCM so that you could see what is at each splash pad and know a little bit about each one.

My first splash pad is Eagle Mountain at Nolan Park.  I have been to Eagle Mountain multiple times but I had never seen this park before.  I took the kids Saturday morning and it turned out to be a packed park due to the baseball games that were going on there that day.  We circled the park looking for parking and luckily found one very close parking space to the splash pad.  Despite all of the people at the park, there were very few using the splash pad.  However, we were there around 10 am and as we were leaving around 11 am, there were more people arriving for the splash pad.

My kids loved this thing but never figured it out.
My kids loved this thing but never figured it out.  *Update, apparently this hasn’t worked in quite a while. 🙁

My favorite thing about the park was how many streams of water coming out of the ground.  Some of them varied as to when they turned on and off but it was fun to watch the kids run from each large water tower to the next and run through the water coming out of the ground.

My least favorite thing about the splash pad was the lack of water coming out of some of the water towers and some of the ground sprayers were not working either.  Only one of the yellow buckets (pictured above) was working.  It would have been fun to see it working to surprise the kids more often as to when it was going to dump water on them.

Other things about the splash pad:  Parking was a little rough.  I happened to go Saturday morning while there were a lot of people there for baseball games.  There is not a parking lot for the park so cars were parked along the streets surrounding the park and down other streets near the park.  There is a playground at the park but it is a little ways away from the splash pad.  The restrooms are right next to the splash pad.  Unfortunately, they were very messy when we were there.  There are no trees or shade nearby the splash pad, although I’m guessing if you go in the evening, you can use the shade of the restrooms building to get away from the sun.

We have everything you need for your children at great prices. We bring shoppers and consignors together in one location two times a year.

Selling is simple. All you do is, price and tag your items and bring them to us at our sale location. We take care of the advertising, location, and sales for you. You receive your check at the end of the following week.

Shoppers: If you are looking for great deals on gently used children’s items, our sale is the place for you! No more hot weekends spent searching garage sales. We have organized everything in one location, just like a retail store – but without the high prices.

KBYU Eleven

1

I grew up watching KBYU Eleven.  My parents knew it was a safe channel for me and I learned some interesting things including facts about animals and stories that I would later read in middle school and high school.  KBYU Eleven’s goal is to help parents, guardians, and teachers help children learn, as well as providing programming and other activities to help children learn.

KBYU Eleven has a wonderful website that has many resources for learning and some great activities for kids.  The activities are something that my daughter has enjoyed.  It even includes a weekly schedule of what is airing on television.  My daughter’s favorite show right now is “Curious George,” which is funny because she has only seen it a handful of times.  But it is on at 8 am and 5 pm on weekdays – it’s so nice having the schedule right there on their website!  Reading is also something that KBYU Eleven promotes which is fantastic.  Reading is such a great way to allow kids to expand their minds and helps in many aspects of their lives.  We received a poster where we have made goals to read books for the summer and will be able to check them off each time we read a book.  If you would like a reading goal chart for your child(ren), you may go here and also find more information about “raising readers.”

The website also offers resources for parents.  I highly recommend it and even offers some “research-based principles and methods to help you build a positive relationship with your child, achieve greater happiness in your family, and optimize your child’s school experience.”  “Ready to Learn” is one of my favorite parts because of how they have broken down a workshop into 12 steps/lessons.  The 12 workshops present key steps in your child’s development, demonstrate how to combine media with reading, and hands-on activities to enhance your child’s learning.  These steps should potentially help any person who is raising and/or teaching children.  Community resources are also available with various programs throughout the area that are helping children and other events going on in the community.

KBYU is truly focused on families and children.  It is a great resource for activities, learning, and parenting.  To learn more about what they do and have to offer, visit their website, follow them on Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to their YouTube channel.

Stay tuned next week for an amazing giveaway from KBYU Eleven, right here on UCM!
