His true identity was a secret to the world…and to the mysterious woman he loved. Named after a red star-shaped wildflower, Pimpernel became the calling card of an elusive and infamous English aristocrat who risked his life to rescue doomed souls from the guillotine during the French Revolution. The Pimpernel’s alter ego, a dimwitted British fop named Percy, helps him hide in plain sight among his enemies, leadings to all the intrigue of a grand epic when the Pimpernel falls in love with France’s most celebrated actress and must keep his secret identity from her at all costs. The Scarlet Pimpernel combines historical fact with dramatic adventure to create an unforgettable story rich with a powerful musical score and a plot filled with romance, mystery and deception. Directed by Jerry Elison. Music Direction by Martha Glissmeyer. Choreography by Penny Colvin.

Young Entrepreneurs Academy

0

Utah County may get a sneak peak at its future business leaders through a new program being created by the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce.

In association with Utah Valley University and the Utah County Academy of Sciences, the chamber announced last Monday that it is sponsoring the creation of a Young Entrepreneurs Academy for Utah County students in grades six through 12.

“We really think that this is a great way for the rising generation of business leaders to get a jump start on their careers,” Donna Milakovic, executive vice president of the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce, said. “Programs such as this help students sharpen their entrepreneurial spirits by teaching them what they need to know to take their ideas from concept to real businesses.”

The program will select 24 students who will then enroll in an October-May course that will teach them how to successfully operate a business. It is expected by the end of the class the students will be able to own and operate a fully functioning businesses that can be carried on after they graduate from the course.

“It ranges as far as your imagination can stretch,” said Milakovic about the types of businesses the students can choose to run.

Milakovic said programs in other states have ranged from candy selling to mobile app designing. The students can team up if they see an idea they like or if they see skill sets in one another that make sense for the students to team up together.

Classes will be held on Thursday nights at UVU. Cameron Martin, vice president of university relations, said the school was excited to participate in the program as it will help capture the innovation, energy and creativity of the valley’s young minds. He noted that the earlier that creativity can be captured in a young person the more successful business practices the students will have in the future.

“I’m really excited about this,” Martin said.

The Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the program. The program will include the opportunity for students to work closely with local business leaders in developing their business ideas, write a business plan, pitch their plan to a panel of investors — Milakovic said this would be similar to the “Shark Tank” TV show — obtain funding, develop their brand, participate in a trade show and launch their enterprise.

Those interested in applying should contact the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce at www.thechamber.org.

Revolt, Week 2

0

I was sore this week.  But it was worth it.  Except for when I had to do any sort of squatting motion while playing with the kids, cleaning, getting into and out of the car, doing laundry, etc. Then I asked myself, “Why did I work out?!” No, I’m kidding. Sort of.

I’m still loving that with Revolt, you get new workout videos every week.  Although, I do wish there was more diversity in each video.  But that usually doesn’t stop me from doing the full workout.

satiation, not over eating

This week I tried really hard to be careful about what I ate and how much I was eating. I read through the Revolt Workout guideline manual and was rereading about eating every 2 or 3 hours, which was what I learned in college in my nutrition class. Smaller portions, more meals throughout the day. It makes sense. Because if I only eat 2 or 3 meals a day, I am so hungry by the time I sit down to eat that I over eat. Hence, the picture above.

It really is amazing how much better you can feel about yourself by eating healthier and better, and also working out.

So seriously, join me in my 8-week workout, feel better about myself journey with Revolt. It will be worth it!

Sponsored: I was provided with product compensation from FlossAndBrush.com and Mom it Forward as part of the #FABsmile blog campaign and the Mom it Forward Blogger Network. All opinions are my own.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve really started to appreciate the little things and the smallest, sometimes most annoying things can make me smile.

I could not be more proud of my little family.
I could not be more proud of my little family.
One day I was getting ready at 4 pm (don't judge) and my daughter noticed the floor was messy. She went and got the vacuum all by herself and cleaned it up.

Revolt Fitness

2

I spent from October 2009 until April 2013 being pregnant or nursing and I am finally done and back to normal. Now that I am able to feel normal again, I am seriously ready to get back into shape.

My husband and I looked into getting a gym membership together at local gyms or our local fitness center, but we just couldn’t justify the price. It’s been a few months, but then I was contacted by Revolt Fitness and after into looking into what they do and their prices, I decided to give them a try.

With Revolt Fitness, new exercise videos are added every week with three different videos for five days of the week workouts. Membership for the program is $10 for one month, $27 for three months, or $50 for a year which is much cheaper than a gym membership. Food menus are provided and there is a Facebook community where you can discuss problems and other things related to getting into shape. You can even try just one week for free to make sure you like it.

My first day was July 1 for the July Uprising and I’ll admit, I have not been doing well.

I thought Revolt would be great for me because as a mother of two little ones, life gets a bit busy and because Revolt is all online, it makes it easy for people like me to work out whenever I have time, even if it is at 6 am. However, I’ve found that it is really easy for me to put off working out. So this week I am going to be more committed. Working out with Revolt will be one of the first things I do each morning, no matter what.

I am going to get in shape. You can follow me each week for the next seven weeks as I work harder at getting my body toned.

Find out more about Revolt here and join!

We received a Revolt Fitness membership in exchange for these posts, however, all opinions are our own. There are affiliate links which help run UCM.

Fireworks in Utah County, July Fourth, 2013

0

There are two places that UCM is currently aware of if you want to see fireworks in Utah County on July 4, 2013.

America’s Freedom Festival, Stadium of Fire, at the LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo. There will be the concert, and following the concert, usually around 10 pm, the fireworks will begin. You will want to reserve some seating to see the firework display early because room to sit and enjoy the fireworks fills up fast!

Where can you see the fireworks from the Stadium of Fire? A favorite location is on the hill in front of the Provo LDS Temple (900 E. and Temple View Drive). The grass in front of the Marriott Center on BYU campus is also a great place to see them. Other locations include Rock Canyon Park, grassy areas near Seven Peaks, the grass in front of Glenwood apartments (University Avenue and University Parkway), and hiking up to the Y on the mountain. Locations we’re not sure about include a school near 2320 N and 650 E. and on BYU campus. Remember, to find a good location, you must stake out your spot early. Many people arrive during the afternoon and early evening and will stay. Also, traffic gets congested after the fireworks so plan in time to possibly sit in a lot of traffic. Know of other good locations? Please share by leaving a comment or emailing us at [email protected]. Your fellow Utah County-ers will thank you!

Independence Day Fireworks at Thanksgiving Point’s Electric Park in Lehi. Concessions, vendors, and activities for a nominal fee will be in the park leading up to the fireworks, which are set off from the north side of the property. Bring a blanket and enjoy a fun evening outdoors. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., fireworks start at 10:00 p.m.

Silhouette Art: Karl Johnson

1

Master scissor artist Karl Johnson of Cut Arts, Inc. has never met a profile he canʼt render, a scene he canʼt capture, or an image he canʼt memorialize.

Silhouette art is a rare craft that was handed down to him by his father when he was a young boy. One of the reasons his work is so exacting comes from being blind in one eye. Because he was born deprived of the binocular vision we all take for granted, he has learned to judge the distance of an object by examining their shadow and rendering images from them.

Each creation is extremely detailed and meant to become a treasured piece to be showcased in any part of the home. From children, couple silhouettes, to pets, to anything imaginable, nothing is out of reach of his scissors. Since the age of nine he has cut hundreds of thousands of images, and worked with both small scale portraits to large projects with big name designers. (Jonathan Adler, Amy Coe, Irvine & Fleming, among others.)

Looking for a unique and talented guest to perform at important events such as weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, or parties? Karl can be booked to create meaningful and useful keepsakes for any private  occasion. His wedding silhouettes are a beautiful and touching gift for a happy new couple, and his silhouettes of guests are a hit as favors. In addition, the host is given a scrapbook with every guest’s  silhouette mounted inside.

He was recently selected by Martha Stewart as one of the best wedding ideas in 15 years. A recent Appearance request came from Marc Anthony to create silhouettes of Jennifer Lopez, and her guests, at her 40th birthday party in NYC. In addition to celebrity homes, he has been asked to create silhouettes of guests at events held at both the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Universal Studios, 20th Century Fox, movie premiers, Galas, Charities, etc.

Karl’s work may be seen adorning the walls of many Hollywood notables such Masterful Silhouettes from a Master Craftsman as Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Jennifer Garner, Alicia Keyes, Leah Remini, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Tori Spelling, Tom Hanks, and the entire cast and crew of the hit show “How I Met Your Mother.” His work has also appeared in numerous TV shows and movies, including the current Natalie Portman film Black Swan.
