Mikarose, Fall, & Giveaway

15

This post is sponsored, however, all opinions are my own.

As all of my friends and family know, and probably most of you, I absolutely love Mikarose. They have modest, classy, beautiful, fun, and feminine dresses, skirts, and tops. Whenever I wear their clothes, I go from being a mom who cleans up messes, changes diapers, and cooks all the time to a real life woman. It may sound silly, but I feel magically transformed when I wear Mikarose.

I received this beautiful dress, the Charlotte, from Mikarose. Here in Utah County, the weather has already cooled down to the perfect weather so I’m ready to change my wardrobe to Fall clothes and colors. This dress is perfect for me for Fall. For those of you not used to Utah weather, it can change pretty dramatically from day to day. One day it’s cold and rainy, the next it’s hot and humid (for Utah). So I can wear any type of shoes with this dress, or boots, and I can pair it with a cardigan or wear it as-is.

I first had the Julia. I was (and still am) in love with the Julia, however, once I tried it on, I realized it wasn’t for my body shape and height. I am about five feet tall and the Julia would have been absolutely perfect for me if I had longer legs. I love this style of dress I’m wearing (Charlotte) for me because it helps me look a bit taller. I love the shape of the dress. I love the floral top. I love that it has seams that come together in the front. I love that it zips in the back. I love the extra fabric covering the chest, even if my kids do use it for a nose wipe. For me, it is perfect.

IMG_1345_20130922133011233

After wearing this dress for a couple of hours while taking some photos and playing with the kids, I realized that the dress is very easily wrinkled. However, maybe if I had ironed it first, it would not have wrinkled so easily. But I would much rather have a wrinkly, beautiful dress and have time with my kids that have a nicely ironed dress all the time.

If you live near Orem, Mikarose has a store in the University Mall that has most of their clothes from online plus a lot of other great clothes. I often find great deals on some really cute clothes.

The Gift and Curse of ADD/ADHD

0

I had the opportunity to listen to Mark Patey speak about the gift and curse of ADD/ADHD.

As a young child, Mark was diagnosed with ADHD and in school, was put in a class with the troublemakers and special needs children. However, at the young age of 15 (or somewhere close to there), he started his own business, was successful, and by the age of 21, he had hundreds of employees.

Mark stressed the difference between what some people say traits are of ADD/ADHD and how he looks at it:

Having a husband who went to have a test taken as to whether he is ADD or not (he is ADD), I thought this was very fascinating.  I have always thought of him as somewhat scatterbrained, impulsive, and distracted.  But Mark is right.  Mike, my husband, can multitask.  He can listen to music and program while seeming to think of a handful of things at one time.

The real important thing to recognize about ADD/ADHD, is that it has many blessings and it is not an excuse.  Just because a person is ADD/ADHD does not mean that he can not accomplish many things in life.  It is not an excuse to not finish a project.  In fact, those with ADD/ADHD actually seem to have a better working brain than “normal” people.  Out of 50 millionaires that Mark interviewed for his book, 42 of them were self-diagnosed or clinically-diagnosed with ADD or ADHD.

Those with ADHD also tend to have addictions because something stimulates the brain and it just keeps going. For example, Mark, over 18 years ago, had an addiction to video games. Now he runs. My husband likes to have something in his mouth (unfortunately, usually it’s sugar). Because of these addicting behaviors, it’s good for those with ADD/ADHD to have something that has an end. Mark likes watching movies because it helps his brain slow down and helps him reboot.

ADD/ADHD people also tend to like praise and things that are measured in tangible results. I’ve noticed that with Mike. After he completes a task, he likes to tell me about it and I’ve always thought that it’s because he likes the praise and being rewarded, even if it’s something simple like taking a shower for two days in a row. I used to get annoyed. Now after hearing Mark, I get it. He likes the tangible results. He loves watching things download. It has an end and it has a result – something that makes him very happy.

So after reading the shortened version of the basics of people with ADD and ADHD, you may be able to think of someone you know who is always thinking, always multitasking, has high energy, has an addiction, and loves praise … or maybe it’s you. But an important part to having ADD/ADHD or knowing someone who does is for that person to have an “Equal Opposite.” The equal opposite understands the ADD/ADHD person and that person recognizes their equal opposite to be such.

I need to be my husband’s equal opposite. Recognizing that he has ADD and that it controls his brain is important. He has a hard time with time management. It’s something that I’ve always been frustrated about because I like to be on time. But I’m learning how to deal with it. As I mentioned, he’s a software developer and sits at our home computer all day and programs for a living. So when we have an event to go to and need to leave at 5:30 pm, I first put the event on the calendar. Around an hour before we need to leave, I remind him that we are leaving at 5:30 pm. About a half hour before we leave, I might remind him again just to make sure he knows that he will not be able to program all night. And 10-15 minutes before we need to walk out the door, I’ll give him a heads up of the time and that we are leaving at 5:30 pm because guaranteed, he’s already lost track of time and has probably forgotten about the event because his mind is on programming and fixing problems, not being on time for an event. Sometimes we make it out the door at that time and sometimes we don’t. But this works for us. Our time management as a couple has improved with how much we have been able to communicate and understand weaknesses and strengths.

Mark’s main point as he spoke to us was, “Magnify the beautiful things of ADD/ADHD, or all you are left with is the curse.” It’s so important that we work with ADD/ADHD, and not against it. Everyone needs to be understanding and remember that everyone is different. And it’s so important to recognize that someone with ADD/ADHD is not broken. They don’t need to be fixed.

I could go on and on about ADD/ADHD and the realization I’ve had now that I’ve listened to Mark, however, I suggest you learn more for yourself. You could visit ADHD Gift, read his book, follow his podcast, or read his blog.

Brick Canvas at Thanksgiving Point, Introduction & Giveaway

11

This post is sponsored but all opinions are our own.

Update: Brick Canvas has gone through some name changes. They are as follows:
Brick Canvas (sub name is “Discover Wellness” formerly “at Thanksgiving Point”)
Brick Canvas Spa (formerly Sage Leaf Spa)
Brick Canvas Cafe (formerly Cafe Fraiche)
Brick Canvas Fitness (formerly Bikram Yoga at Brick Canvas)
Brick Canvas AVEDA (is the new salon name)
Brick Canvas Venue (formerly The Loft)

Brick Canvas at Thanksgiving Point is a newer facility at Thanksgiving Point. It is tucked away on the west side and is in a beautiful building. Shelli Gardner wanted a place with all of her favorite things so in October 2012, Brick Canvas was opened. It includes a spa, a salon, Lyceum, Bikram Yoga, and a cafe.

Follow UCM over the next few weeks as I explore their services and offer a more in-depth review of what goes on at each place. However, for now, here is a little bit about each studio and service:

Sage Leaf Spa: OUR REVIEW – Here, the goal is is to offer revitalizing spa services that uplift the mind and senses. They also want to help melt away stress and tension, as well as, alleviate joint pain and relax overused muscles. At Sage Leaf Spa, they offer many different services. I am most looking forward to the Vichy Shower which apparently provides a lot of relaxation. Sage Leaf Spa also offers couple massages (or bring a friend) and aims to offer the ultimate relaxation experience beginning from the moment you walk in the door.

Vivesque: OUR REVIEW – At Vivesque, from the moment you walk in, you will be treated like royalty. They offer drinks and gourmet snacks, complimentary scalp and hand massages, full salon hair services, and manicures and pedicures. They also offer some of the most competitive pricing for this area so you can get the best treatment at an affordable price. By the way, there is a grand piano in their studio. The whole place is absolutely gorgeous.

Lyceum: OUR REVIEW – Lyceum trains strength, movement and endurance. It defines movement as the intersection between balance, coordination, flexibility, stability and mobility. Lyceum uses equipment that allows us to train standing up which in turn helps us to perfect the movement patterns needed to achieve optimal physical performance. This is defined as functional training. What I enjoy most about this type of training is that it uses no machines and offers no guarantees. The people at Lyceum believe that success is completely up to you – the work you put into it is the achievement that you will get out of it.

Bikram Yoga: OUR REVIEW – This is a different type of yoga – 26 Bikram poses during a 90-minute class, and each pose is repeated twice. Each class is done in a room that is 105 degrees Fahrenheit with 40 percent humidity. The key to not passing out? Hydrate well the day before and before class. I enjoy that it is designed to help heal injuries, improve circulation, increase endurance, and burns about 1250 calories per class!

Fraíche: Fraiche at Brick Canvas serves a variety of quick and delicious fare. From fruit smoothies and granola snacks to tasty sandwiches and soups, the menu features fresh and healthy options that are sure to please. Start the day with a nourishing breakfast, grab a snack on the run, or sit and enjoy a leisurely lunch on the beautiful patio. I have already tried the Love Bomb smoothie and it was probably the most delicious smoothie I have ever tasted.

Giveaway: Brick Canvas is offering one person one 30-minute massage and one month free of either Lyceum or Bikram Yoga. The winner may upgrade their massage and just pay the difference.

For those who do not win, we would like you to offer a unique discount to everything at Brick Canvas! During your first visit to Brick Canvas you will receive a 30% discount on anything you purchase. This special discount will be good for any products or services purchased that day in any studio. However, this offer only extends until the end of October.  Just let them know you are a reader of Utah Valley Moms!

The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back

0

“The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back,” which is FREE through Monday, September 23, 2013 on Amazon. It currently has 466 reviews, averaging a 4.6 rating. It is a sweet, clean, funny, contemporary YA romance that as of right now, is #1 on the Top Free 100 Teen Romances.

The book normally sells for $5.99!

Here’s the blurb from the back of the book:

Everyone knows how all those fairy tales go. The princess gets beautiful, nabs her prince, falls instantly in love, lives happily ever after and leaves her evil stepsisters in the dust.

But what happens when you’re the ugly stepsister and your obnoxiously perfect—read pretty, smart, and, worst of all, sickeningly nice—stepsister is dating the charming, tall, devastatingly handsome guy you’ve had a thing for since you were nine years old?

Quirky, artistic and snarky Mattie Lowe does not lead a charmed life. Her mother is constantly belittling her on Skype. Mercedes, the school mean girl, has made it her personal mission to torment Mattie. But worst of all? Her stepsister Ella is the most beautiful, popular girl in school and is dating Mattie’s secret longtime crush, Jake Kingston.

Tired of being left out and done with waiting for her own stupid fairy godmother to show up, Mattie decides to change her life. She’ll start by running for senior class president against wildly popular Jake.

Ella can keep her Prince Annoying. Mattie’s going to rule the school.

And no one, not even a cute and suddenly flirty Jake, is going to stop her.

New Mom Essentials

I don’t know how moms used to do it in the “old” days but there are a few things that I feel like are essential for new moms.

I used one of these all the time while pregnant until I could button my normal pants again. It was so useful and helped me stay modest.

Tops that are made with nursing in mind are essential for me. It makes it easy while out in public to nurse or pump and not have to lift the whole shirt up and expose my back (and who knows what else!)

Comfy, nursing pajamas are a must after coming home from the hospital. The first night home with one of my children, I basically spent without a shirt on because I didn’t have a comfortable night time shirt to wear. Just trust me, you’re going to want something light and easy to move.

Nursing cover is essential if you will be nursing or pumping for all of those times when you are out and need to feed or pump. I’ve used mine in the car, in waiting rooms, and at the fair, along with almost every other place imaginable.

I need these to use with my next newborn. They’re so self explanatory … I just hope my oldest can read by the next time I have a newborn in the house!

If you are expecting or know someone who is, you can find must-have essentials for mom and baby at zulily!

  • The Trampoline Tower Tumblers, a troupe of ten competitive aerial athletes from the Ukraine who launch themselves from trampolines to scale, repel and pass through a three-story high translucent tower
  • The popular King Charles Troupe hailing from New York City brings one-wheeled excitement to the ring with a spirited and comedic basketball competition featuring ten whirling unicyclists
  • In addition, the show features the electrifying high-wire acrobats, daredevil stunts on The Steel Vortex, the youngest female Human Cannonball, remarkable hand-balancing duos, the always hilarious Clown Alley…and of course no Ringling Bros. circus experience would be complete without our four-legged star performers including the majestic Bengal tigers presented by the charismatic “Taba” and a fun-filled Asian elephant dance party
