Fall Style with Zulily

0

When the seasons change, I’m ready for new clothes and knowing that this year, we don’t have a lot of money for me to splurge on clothes is making me even more excited for new, warm clothes.

I’m the kind of person who likes to wear anything but jeans. Jeans are so restricting.

Actually, at one staff training a few years ago, my boss gave us a lecture on how we should only wear jeans to our job. By wearing skirts, dresses, and nice pants, we were making ourselves seem better than the people we worked with and that was bad (as I worked with low-income people). I’m pretty sure that whole speech was for me. So I forced myself to wear jeans and hated every single minute of it.

However, I no longer work for that organization and just work for myself and my family so I wear dresses and skirts all the time.

I did a little online window shopping and here were some looks that I loved for my Fall Style:

Love the purple and black and the maxi length for the cold winter months here in Utah.
Boots, a necessity for winter.
In cold Utah weather, a jacket is a must. I love white/cream because it goes with everything I own. Although, with two young kids, it also means that they get messy very, very quickly.

You can find fall essentials for women at zulily! and more! I love shopping there for my little girl and boy and they have some adorable maternity clothes. It almost makes me wish I was pregnant just so I could buy some of the clothes … almost.

Superior Water & Air Review

0

I recently had Superior Water & Air come to my mother-in-law’s home to clean her air ducts and do a radon test.

First, I need to talk about the house. She has lived in the home for about two and a half years. It was messy when we moved in (and smelled like dog) and a neighbor had once told me that the house actually looked a lot worse before the bank took over and they must have repainted it. She is still working on making the house nicer but cleaning the air ducts was not something she had done yet so I was pretty nervous about what might happen when Superior Water & Air would come to clean.

superior water & air

Rex and Ian of Superior Water & Air came to her house to do the cleaning, but not before Kally had called the night before, verifying that it was okay that they come. I love that. I knew that they knew we had an appointment and in return, they knew that we would be there when they arrived. So Rex and Ian called before they came to let me know that they were on their way. Another little thing that was nice – I didn’t have to stay at home all morning wondering when they would arrive. Instead, I was free to do whatever I needed to that morning and knew exactly when they’d be arriving.

When Rex and Ian arrived, Rex completely explained to me what they would be doing as well as answered a lot of the questions I had. After showing them where all of the vents were, they began their work.

superior water & air

Rex and Ian hooked up a huge vacuum, essentially, to our furnace in the basement and went upstairs to start cleaning them out. I recommend not sitting under vents in the basement when they are cleaning. For our house, at least, it was so dusty and things were falling out of our vents. I made the mistake of being under one once but I learned quickly to not be in the same room in the basement that was was below the one they were working in.

Rex and Ian found a rock about the size of my palm, two tennis balls, crayons, and a whole mess of all sorts of things in our air ducts. I feel positive that the air ducts had never been cleaned before which is absolutely disgusting, seeing as we use those ducts all of the time for air as it is pushed around our house.

This is Rex with the basement bathroom air vent. He took it down and this is what it looked like.

After they were done, a lot of our things had a layer of dust and dirt on them, and our carpets needed a bit of vacuuming, however, thinking about how much the cleaned out of our air ducts and the fact that there was dirt that now needed to be cleaned up off of our floors and other things made me so glad they came because what we were seeing was just a small portion of what was actually in our air ducts and what we were breathing!

If you look really closely, you can see a lot of dirt on the floor from them cleaning the air ducts. They also cleaned it all up right after they finished the upstairs.
If you look really closely, you can see a lot of dirt on the floor from them cleaning the air ducts. They also cleaned it all up right after they finished the upstairs.

Having dirty air ducts can worsen Asthma and other breathing problems. Our air ducts and furnace were so messy that it can not only hurt us, but it can also damage the furnace. Keeping it clean can allow the furnace to have a longer life and keeps it in better condition. Rex and Ian also sanitized our vents which will at least one year so that means all of the bacteria and other things that were living on those vents that my children love playing with so much are now gone. I’m really hoping that these clean air ducts and vents will keep us feeling better this Winter. This may just be me and my brain, but I feel like it even smells better when the furnace comes on now.

Superior Water & Air also provided a Radon Test to the home. Radon is a natural occurring gas however, in large amounts, it can be very dangerous. If there are cracks and leaks in the foundation of your home, you are likely to have higher amounts of Radon. Too much Radon can lead to lung cancer and other problems. It is very serious and I recommend getting your home tested for Radon. The actual testing device will need to sit in your home for two nights, however, it’s tucked away in a corner in the basement and it only took about 10 minutes as they picked it up and printed out the report.

Things I loved about Superior Water & Air

This is probably a small deal to most people, but as we are a no-shoe household, the first thing I noticed when they walked in was that they took off their shoes! It had been raining outside when they came so I was a little stressed about the amount of water and mud they would track through our house as they worked but it ended up not being a problem! I thought that Rex and Ian taking off their shoes was a huge sign of respect and I was very impressed (and not just because I’m Asian).

Yes, I had to have a picture of this. I was just so impressed.
Yes, I had to have a picture of this. I was just so impressed.

As I mentioned before, they called me to verify and notify me of their arrival. I thought it was great that I received a call the night before to remind me and verify that Superior Water & Air was planning to be at my house the next day. I was notified that they would arrive 8 am – 12 pm the next day (which was actually scheduled a couple of weeks prior), but because I knew that the technician would be calling me, I was able to run errands and get things done that I needed to because I knew someone would be calling. I liked that I didn’t have to wait at home from 8 am – 10:30 am, 10:30 am being the time they actually arrived.

Rex, Ian, and Rob (who came to pick up our Radon test) were all very nice and more than willing to explain everything and answer all questions that we had about the cleaning and Radon test. I was very impressed with how professional they are and how friendly they were.

Rex and Ian had laid down tarps of some sort to protect our carpets and floors as they moved their equipment around the house. They also seemed to be very gentle if they needed to move furniture which I appreciated.

Our ducts were so messy that all sorts of dirt and garbage fell out of our vents in our basement but Rex and Ian used a vacuum to clean up the mess so if it hadn’t been for dusting, I would not have had to have done a thing to our house after they left.  I really appreciated that they cleaned up after themselves and that the floors were all left clean when they left.

Rex and Ian working hard ... well, Rex is. Ian was waving to my husband.

Fresh Baby & Correct Portions

0

Before the last few months, and excluding while I was pregnant, I felt like I had a good sense of portions. At the same time, however, I could eat a whole 10″ pizza like it was nothing. So that is why I am so excited about Fresh Baby’s campaign with the USDA .

Fresh Baby supports parents with simple and natural solutions to reducing a child’s risk of obesity by promoting the development of healthy eating habits from the first bite of solid foods. The recipes included in the books, newsletter and online were developed to be convenient for anyone, no matter their income or location. With research concluding that children’s eating preferences are established by age 3, it is clear that parents play a crucial role in getting their children off to the right start. Fresh Baby was founded, and continues to operate, on the belief that all parents want to raise healthy children, but when it comes to healthy eating habits, they often lack the tools, skills, and knowledge needed to be effective.

The interesting thing that I have found is that my children are very good at managing their portions if we allow them to do so. Although there may be a yummy, sugary treat in front of them, they will only eat a small portion of it because they know their limits. We try hard to make sure that they have eaten enough healthy food before the yummy, sugary treat so that they feel satisfied before they eat their treat and also try never to make them eat more than they want. I remember as a young kid feeling full but I had to eat my broccoli or whatever vegetable that was there that I didn’t want. To make sure that doesn’t happen with our kids, we try to give them more fruits and vegetables and smaller portions of the main meal, without denying them the good nutrients of it, until they have eaten their fruits and vegetables.

I have two children and from the beginning, the way I handled feeding them solid foods was very different. With my three-year old girl, I tended to feed her more grains and cheese because at that time of my life, I wasn’t eating as many fruits and vegetables as I should have been eating. And whether it is because of her or because of how I fed her from the beginning, it is still evident that she enjoys her grains and dairy products more than her vegetables. Sometimes she really likes fruits but it just varies on the day. So making sure she gets the good food that she needs each day is a struggle.

With my one-year old son, by the time I had him, my diet was completely different and fresh fruits and vegetables became essential to our eating habits and to our refrigerator. Again, I don’t know if it’s just his taste buds or if it’s because of how I fed him from the beginning, but he loves fresh fruits and vegetables. He will often eat those over anything else on his plate.

fresh baby plate

Although my two children enjoy different foods, one thing has remained constant: we allow them to choose when they have had enough food. With our daughter, some nights she has three carrots and claims she’s done with dinner. Although we try to encourage her to eat more, we also may recognize that she had a large breakfast and lunch with a couple of snacks during the day so she may not be hungry for dinner. Or she may be feeling sick and doesn’t feel like eating. Or perhaps she really just does not feel too hungry and might eat more the following day. I mean, we’ve all been in those situations, right? And for us, it is important to not override her internal instincts and change her ability to distinguish when she feels satiated.

My son, on the other hand, rarely has a meal where he hardly touches his food. Although he’s young, I can already see our future food budget for each month draining because of the quantity of food he can consume. In fact, he often will eat more than our three-year old. However the case, we make sure that he allows us to tell us when he is done and he is so good at it. I have been impressed with his ability to monitor how much sugar he consumes. With the way he eats, I always expect him to down slices of cake at a time, however, he is perfectly fine with a few bites of a sugary treat before he says he’s all done.

fresh baby water bottle & plate

I feel like as a grown adult, I could learn quite a few lessons from my children on finding correct portions and listening to my body. We received sectioned plates from Fresh Baby and I have been using the adult sectioned plate for some of my meals and have been somewhat shocked to see how bad I am at determining portions and making sure I eat enough food from the four food groups that are on the plate. My kids love their sectioned plates and have learned a lot about food and the food groups from using them. It worries them when the “meat and beans” section is not filled or when they feel like I haven’t put enough food in a section to complete the portion.

portions & drink lots of water

Drinking enough water is a major concern for my family. As with most little kids, my children love their milk. Every morning and afternoon, you can find them on our kitchen floor, sitting down with their blanket and milk cup, just sucking down the milk. I take water bottles with us almost every where we go, even if it’s just to a friend’s house down the street, but milk is usually what is asked for every time. My son is better at drinking water than my daughter, as she is willing to sacrifice her hydration and wait for milk. Although when it’s hot outside and she’s looking flushed, we do basically force her to drink at least a little bit of water, whether she thinks she needs to or not. Because water is very important for the body and is, after all, what most of our body is comprised of. As for my husband and I, well, our days get busy and our minds are elsewhere, and water is not something we drink all of the time. My goal is to encourage the whole family to drink more water. Not only does our body need it, but it helps our bodies be more healthy, and that’s important.

Our family rarely drinks sugary drinks. Our kids hardly ever drink a sugary drink (it’s considered a treat if they do) and my husband and I rarely ever taste a sugary drink. I used to love Mt. Dew and drank it regularly with friends. However, that soon came to an end and even if I’m offered a free sugary drink, I usually pass. In fact, I have a Mt. Dew from an event I went to a few nights ago and it is still unopened, sitting in my refrigerator. They’re not good for the body or the teeth and so our family chooses to stay away from them.

usda healthy portions

I love being outside in good weather and it is a great place for children.  Being outside keeps our entire family active and gives the children a place to explore (which is so much better than exploring our kitchen cabinets for the tenth time in one day).  We love going on walks, on bike rides, especially up the nearby canyon, playing tennis, playing on playgrounds, and just being outside in general.  During the cold winter months, you can often find us running circles around the house and having races back and forth in our living room.  We play tag and hide and go seek.  Although I was very active before children, now having young kids has shown me how to have a lot more fun while “getting my energy out.”

So what can you do and get to help your family with understanding portion sizes better? First of all, Fresh Baby has some great products.

Also, sit down and talk with your family about what you all can do to help improve your eating habits and exercise habits. It is important to have a plan and to work together. I know without my family’s support, I could have never made the changes in our eating habits.

5 Tips for Traveling with Young Kids

1

From going to Hawaii to Oregon, Park City, Utah to Omaha, Nebraska to Mexico to San Diego, California, and to Italy, we have quite enjoyed our vacations, even in bringing our young children. That’s why I have put together a list of 5 tips for traveling with young kids.

utah county moms
I’m Kim, this is my husband, Mike. I blog for UtahCountyMoms.com and love to do anything outside, especially with my family.

My husband and I love to travel. We don’t always have the time or money to go, but we try to make it happen as often as we can, even if that means that we’re only traveling an hour away to a nearby city. He needs the break from work and the kids and I need a break from the same routine that we seem to get wrapped up in. Plus, our family loves to explore new places and new things.

However, for me, traveling can become very stressful really fast. We currently have an 18-month old and a three-year old so between remembering everything to bring and making sure the kids are entertained on an airplane or car and making sure everyone is enjoying our vacation, I can get pretty overwhelmed.

Here are my 5 tips for traveling with young kids:

1. Make a list and check it twice, or even three times, before you leave your house. I am a very organized person so lists are important to me, however, they’re just common sense when trying to pack for yourself and two kids. I don’t know if your house is like mine, but I pack for everyone and verify we have everything while my husband only has to pack for himself. However, even then, I’m still making sure he has everything because he always forgets something. Items that are on my list for traveling with young kids and for myself other than clothes include games, snacks, favorite blankets and toys, tickets that we’ll need to get into places, hotel and car confirmations, sunscreen, and favorite books for everyone. Before we leave, we try to make sure we have everything we need and if they don’t seem to fit into our suitcases (especially while flying), we plan on buying it when we get there.  Lists, for me, really help me feel calm about our upcoming vacation.

park city, utah
We went to visit Park City, Utah once. It was absolutely beautiful and a great, relaxing vacation.

2. Don’t plan to do everything that you want to do and don’t plan to see everything you want to see. Just know that with young children, something will happen and your plan won’t go as planned. For each vacation we take, I generally like to make a list of things I’d like to visit before we leave and then I will mention what day I think it would be best to go visit that place, depending on location and how much time we have. However, I also make a note as to how important it is to go visit that location. If it’s low priority, I know that I’ll be okay with never visiting that place because you never know when naps will last longer than expected, the family will be more hungry than usual, or as you’re driving/walking by somewhere, it might catch your eye and you’ll go visit that place instead. For us, plans are not plans, they’re just guidelines and suggestions.

park city, utah
Although I had planned for everyone to wake up early so that we could go exploring the city before we left, two family members were still asleep so I took my daughter on a trail to explore a barn and fields.

3. Plan activities for the kids. We recently went on vacation to a nearby city that took us one hour to get to and it was amazing. However, there weren’t lots of activities and events for the kids like the cities we normally go to, so we made sure we provided a lot of swimming time in the pool (we stayed in condos so the community had its own pool) and we made sure there was plenty of time for playing outside. Even though I had areas I wanted to go visit that weren’t as interesting to kids, I tried to balance that time out with making sure the kids enjoyed themselves, because let’s be honest. If the kids are angry and sad, everyone seems to become angry and sad. Plus, these vacations are for the children too, so I always want to make sure they are enjoying themselves as well.

park city, utah
This was a fun little walk/hike we found for the kids. They had fun running around.

4. Find a family-friendly place to stay. I know that finding a vacation rental is not always possible, however, my family personally loves vacation rentals. I think that it is perfect for kids because it gives them an environment similar to their actual home and it allows for space for them to run around. Our last vacation rental condo that we stayed in had very steep stairs from the kids’ bedroom down to the main floor. Yes, I fell down them and no one else did, but I think that is something I’ll stay clear of in the future. An injured child is the last thing I want and that was just too dangerous. However, in general, we have loved our past vacation rentals, especially when they have outdoor space so that we can let the kids enjoy playing outside when we’re at the rental, versus when staying at a hotel, there’s little outdoor space to play in and I feel like young children need to be closely monitored. I also enjoy that the children can have their own bedroom with the vacation rentals we’ve stayed in. That means that when the children go to bed early, my husband and I can stay up to watch movies and eat all of the goodies that we made or bought without having to share. And on top of all of the positives, my number one love about vacation rentals is the kitchens. We can make whatever we’d like for ourselves and the kids. Instead of buying a $5 grilled cheese kids’ meal everyday for lunch, we can spend $5 once on bread, cheese, and potatoes at the local grocery store and feed them that same grilled cheese lunch everyday. For us, vacation rentals are family-friendly, however, really, any safe, clean place is great – finding one will really help relieve some of the stress that comes with traveling with young kids.

Enjoying our vacation rental balcony. We ate almost every meal out on the balcony.

5. Cherish and enjoy every single moment. Going on vacation is one of the things that really strengthens our family. So even though on our last vacation, my kids missed naps and were grumpy, even though we were eating lunch an hour later than I had planned so everyone was hungry and mad, and even though my daughter refused to stay in her room at nights, the most important thing about every single vacation is that we are spending time together as a family. I personally enjoy taking a lot of photos so that we can remember how much fun we had and all of the new places we were able to explore. I love taking advantage of those little moments on vacation when we’re not really doing anything except for lounging around because that doesn’t often happen at home. At home it seems we’re always heading somewhere or trying to do something but that’s what is great about vacations. They are a time to relax and I love that. I love when my kids are fascinated by the new scenery, when they just want to sit on the couch with us and join our conversation, when we’re all in the car excited about going somewhere new, and when we’re all out enjoying ourselves. I don’t even mind when they’re crying and upset because we’re together and that’s what matters most.

family time
I love moments like these – we were waiting to go to the pool and there was some extra time to just relax and take a bunch of pictures, until the boy was over it and moved on.
