Zulily Christmas Wish List

I was just “window shopping” zulily this morning and found some really fun toys. Okay, I admit, I didn’t know zulily sold toys, but now I do and now my three-year old daughter and 18-month old son may just have a fun Christmas from zulily. Although they’re asleep (or supposed to be) as I’m writing this, I think I might know what would be on their Christmas wish list.

I love these little things and I know my kids do, too. They always play with them at friends’ houses. I may have tried one a few times as well.

This is a “green” doll house that I know my kids would love. I might even be tempted to play with it every now and then … with the kids, of course.

Is this little train and road adventure set not fun, or what?

This little washing machine is adorable! I never think to about washing machines when playing house. But by the way, zulily also has refrigerators, dishwashers, stove/ovens, and even a kitchen counter which I am in love with:

I’m positive my son would love this fire engine!

And for all of those doll lovers out there, zulily has an amazing collection of the Queen’s Treasures doll accessories. They’ve got outfits for different weather conditions, bakery, desk, and outdoor sets, pets, a trunk and bed, beautiful Victorian dressers and amoires, and even a shaved ice set. I would post all of the photos here, but I don’t think you’re going to want to scroll through all of their pictures here when you can just see for yourself on zulily (click the picture).

Okay, really, I wish I could post all of the photos of toys because they are all so fun and perfect for kids, but I think you’ll just have to shop for toys, books and more at zulily this Holiday Season yourself!

Craftsy Free Classes & Sale

This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for supporting UCM!

I am not crafty, but I wish I was.  So that’s why these classes are great.  Plus, Craftsy is offering Free Craftsy Classes.

What is Craftsy?
Craftsy is a worldwide craft community offering online classes. It also has a patterns marketplace where independent designers can sell their patterns; a supplies shop with great deals on yarn, fabric, and class kits; and a projects section where members share pictures of their latest craft successes. With over two million members and counting, Craftsy has something for just about everyone, in categories ranging from quilting, sewing, knitting, painting, photography, cooking, and more.

Why should I take a class online?
Online education isn’t just for schools and universities anymore. Craftsy courses provide you the convenience of a world-class instructor in your home, whenever you want to learn. Online education, no matter what subject, is a great alternative to in-person classes for a number of reasons.

With many online learning opportunities being on-demand, you are able to learn at your own pace, anytime. Online learning is a fantastic alternative to in-store craft classes for people with busy schedules or who have difficulty leaving the house. It also allows you to watch a troubling section over-and-over again, so you can see exactly how a technique is carried out, or refer back to your class for relevant concepts before beginning any new projects.

The semi-annual All About Baby Expo in Provo will be held November 9 at the Utah Valley Convention Center.

For free tickets to this expo, you can register – although the whole event is free, those with tickets will be entered to win prizes and make sure to take your ticket to the event.  The first 1000 people will receive gift bags!

Here is more information:

Provo, Utah – October 21, 2013 – Utah is the highest state in the nation when it comes to birth rate with 88 births per 1,000 women ages 15 – 44, according to data from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Therefore, the semi-annual All About Baby Expo continues in Provo, Utah.

“Our mission is simple: We encourage parents and guardians to become informed on options for their baby’s physical, spiritual, and emotional health and happiness from pregnancy to delivery and through the tender, new years of life. With education, parents can be empowered with information, inspired to make the right decisions for their family,” explains event producer, Melynda Fanene.

The All About Baby Expo will be held on Saturday, November 9th from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at the Utah Valley Convention Center, 220 West Center Street in Provo.  The event is free to the public and will provide a full day of information, activities, and exhibitors offering products for mom, baby, and the family. An updated schedule can be found at http://www.AllAboutBabyExpo.com.

Businesses and organizations involved are required to support the mission of All About Baby.  “We want to offer a platform for “baby” businesses to present their products and services to moms and dads so they can provide the very best.  With so many alternatives available, we want to place as many in one spot, in front of new parents, to help save a little time and possibly give them an option they never considered.”

Though the event is free admission, attendees are encouraged to donate their Change4Change to help build care packages for babies in the local Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

5 iPhone Tips

0

The iPhone continues to be one of the most popular smartphones on the market and with its simple powerful interface that popularity is much deserved. But, even with a simple design, the iPhone packs a powerful camera that delivers quality images in an easy to use interface. Here are a few tips to help you get the best looking photos out of the camera you always have with you.

1. The Rule of Thirds – Don’t put your subject smack dab in the middle of your shot. It’s boring. If you’re shooting your son playing soccer, for example, don’t have him running right on the far right side of the picture leaving dead space behind him. Instead, place him on the left side of the image and have him run through the frame.

2. HDR – High Dynamic Range is essentially allowing your camera to shoot and combine two images which helps lighten shadows and reduce overexposure. Usually this works out nicely giving you a natural looking image but occasionally especially with fast moving subjects it can produce less than desirable results.

3.Post Processing – Fixing images after shooting is normal for modern digital photographers and even traditional film photographers will fix problems in their photos. iPhone photos are no different. The app store is saturated with photo editing apps but the most useful one I have found is Snapseed. In Snapseed you can adjust exposure, white balance, crop, spot adjust, and add filters. It’s basically what the Photoshop iOS app should be. Just be careful, don’t overdo it.

4. Digital Zoom – The best zoom is your feet. Digital zoom is the same as cropping the image after you have already taken the picture so avoid it at all costs. It is better to take the full resolution image and then crop than to have a low quality photo that you can’t do anything with.

5. Clean the lens! Protect it. If your iPhone is like mine it’s in my pocket, in my workout armband, in the kitchen, and basically everywhere. Having a case that protects the lens can make a world of difference in how your photos turn out. Those small scratches, dirt particles, and smudges all degrade image quality so it’s best to clean the lens occasionally to get the most out of your camera. If you can, use a microfiber cloth, if you don’t have one use something lint free that will not smudge your lens. A soft shirt or works nicely.

Bonus Tip: Challenge yourself to take photos everyday. Even if you have no desire to be a professional photographer you can improve your photo taking abilities by actively looking for shots. Your Instagram followers will thank you. 🙂
