Chick-fil-A Grand Opening, Provo

0

We’ve been awaiting the Provo Chick-fil-A Grand Opening for months now and it’s finally happening January 9, 2014. This Chick-fil-A is at the corner of 500 West and Bulldog Avenue in Provo, by Macey’s. And as usual, the first 100 customers will get free food for a year from Chick-fil-A, but make sure you read their rules because this is not a normal stand-in-line-and-be-the-first-100. Instead, it’s a type of raffle and it seems pretty interesting.

Despite the fact that we won’t be there trying to get free food for a year (unless you all aren’t), we’ll definitely be there often this upcoming year and may even post some of our visits to Instagram.

And stop by on Wednesday, January 8, and donate some non-perishable items for free Chick-fil-A!

Discount Movie Passes in Utah County

1

We did a little research on where to find discount movie passes in Utah County and were suprised that we only found Harmon’s in Orem to have discount movie passes.  Macey’s in Orem used to carry them many years ago, however, I guess they have discountinued carrying discount movie passes or tickets.  Harmon’s in Orem had the discount movie passes but occassionally sell out of them as they order them in large quantities and don’t reorder until they are getting low.

You can use discount movie passes at Cinemarks for any movie regardless of when it came out, but you cannot use them online. With discount movie passes, you will need to go in person to the Box Office to purchase tickets.

Harmon’s North Orem Service Desk 9 AM – 8 PM, Cinemark Discount Passes Only, $7 per pass/ticket

Macey’s Lehi Service Desk – more information to come soon

(We happened to be in South Jordan last weekend so we checked the Harmon’s while we were there, as the Harmon’s is in the same parking lot/shopping area as Megaplex 20.)

Harmon’s South Jordan 9 AM – 8 PM, Megaplex Tickets $7.75 (cannot be used for New Relases – 2 week waiting period)
Cinemark Tickets (Jordan Landing / Century) $7.00 (2 weeks wait for new movies)

Macey’s North Orem – No Discount Tickets
Ridleys North Orem – No Discount Tickets
Smiths Orem – No Discount Tickets
Costco Orem – No Discount Tickets

Other stores may carry them so make sure you call or stop in to find out if they do. It may vary. We will try to keep this updated to bring you the latest information.

Thanks to Ellyse, a UCM reader, who helped us with our list!

I Am A Good Mom

0

I didn’t believe I was that great of a mom until last week.  Being a “good mom” has always been a struggle for me becasue I didn’t really know how to qualify it.  Am I a good mom if I teach my kids something new everyday?  Because I don’t.  Am I a good mom if I make sure my kids get reading time in everyday?  Because that never happens.  Am I good mom if my kids eat fruits and vegetables everday?  Because I’m lucky if I can get my daughter to eat one serving of fruits or vegetables each day.

When I think of a “good mom,” it’s someone who is willing to drop everything to play with her kids.  A good mom takes her kids out on special outings and to special mommy & me meals and activities.  If I was a good mom, I would spend as much time playing with my kids as possible.

Unfortunately, I don’t.  I make breakfast almost every single morning for the kids – I can’t stand cold cereal for breakfast so I have to make something.  I get them ready for the day.  Sometimes I take some extra time to get myself prepared to walk out the door.  Then we’ve got errands to run or story time to go to.  Whatever the case, we’re gone somewhere … not necessarily spending quality time together playing and laughing … we’re just … together.  Right after that, it’s lunch time, then quiet time or nap time or preschool.  Following that, I’ve got to make dinner, we eat dinner, and then if there’s time, we’ll go out and do something together as a family.  But I never get long periods of time where I can sit down with the kids, have an hour-long tea party, sing songs for a half hour, or just play and be silly because I always need to be doing something for someone it seems.

And so I honestly believed I was a bad mom until just recently.

I mentioned to my sister-in-law that ADHD Gift has changed my relationship with my husband for the better and she mentioned that the Five Languages of Love has changed hers because she and her husband understand each other just like I understand my husband better.  She talked about how she shows love by doing things for others – she’s a service-oriented person.  Her husband needs quality time which happens to be just like me!  And as I thought through this new concept I had just been exposed to, I felt a huge sense of relief!  I am a good mom – I just had to change my thinking!

After talking to my husband about it, he confirmed what I was thinking.  I am a good mom because I make sure that the children get meals everyday.  They have clean clothes … or at some point recently were clean.  They have been taken to various places to increase their social and listening skills.  They get their naps and quiet time everyday.  Even though I thought I could only be a good mom by spending quality time with them, many moms believe that they are good moms if they help and serve their family and that’s exactly what I do every single day!

The past week, I have been retraining my thought process.  At the end of the day, instead of remembering how much I did not get done, how many times my children cried, or how awful the house looked at the end of the day, I am instead crossing off things on a checklist in my head:

  • Are the kids still alive and healthy because I gave them food, water, and exercise?
  • Did the children smile at least once today?
  • Did I give the children time to learn and explore, even if I was busy in the kitchen?
  • Do my kids love me?

These are simple questions but I have been able to say yes to them every single night, verifying to myself that I am a good mom.  I have taken care of my children and they are healthy and happy, partly because of me.

So I challenge all of you great moms out there to find your strengths.  What are you good at doing as a mom?  Are you really good at playing with your children?  Are you really good at making sure your children eat everyday?  What makes you an excellent mom?  And then focus on that.  Remember that not everday is going to go as planned and it probably won’t be anywhere near perfect.  But as long as you are trying your best, that’s all that really matters.

Giveaway: On a Personal Note …

4

Happy Holidays!  It’s Kim here, and I wanted to mention a couple of things.

One, we’re doing giveaways through Facebook this week because of the holidays and because I wanted to somehow show you how much I appreciate you.  Yes, you.

Without you, there would be absolutely no reason for me to do what I do.

I first began this a few years ago because I wanted to know more about what was going on in Utah County because I found this place completely boring.  Everything “cool” was happening in Salt Lake.  Turns out, if you go looking for things to do, you can find them here, too!  And so it began.  I’ve spent hundreds of hours putting effort into this blog and this year, I’ve finally felt like ti was all worth it.  You readers are so great to me and assure me that what I’m doing is worth it.  So I just wanted to let you know that you are worth it.

Many other bloggers blog because they have some great creativity product to show you or some fantastic life to tell you about but I just want to show you the goodness that is out there in Utah County and beyond.  Time with your children, your family, your loved ones, your friends, and anyone else you spend time with is so precious and I, like many of you, find some of my most favorite moments when we’re out as a family exploring new things and attending (free) events.

So this is why I’m here.  This is why I work so hard most weeks.  It’s because of you.  It has very little to do with businesses and other sponsors.  Those are sometimes just a small perk.  This blog is for all of you out there just wanting to know what else to do other than going to a movie and going bowling.

Thank you for making Utah Valley Moms what it is and I look forward to this upcoming year with you!

So now, if you haven’t yet, jump over to Facebook where we’ll be giving away things all week.  I know it’s a busy week with family, friends, and all, but I just want to show you how much I appreciate you!

Shari’s Berries & Pro Flowers

0

Utah Valley Moms was given flowers and chocolate-covered strawberries with the possibility that we might write about their product.  All opinions are our own.

Some other local bloggers and I recently got together for a blogger breakfast and it was fantastic.  If you have Instagram, search “#bloggerbreakfast” and you can see a bit of what we did.  But the highlight of my day was the Shari’s Berries I received.  I took them home and then indulged.  They were amazing!

DSC_0113

DSC_0118

They look amazing, right?! And trust me, they tasted a million times better than they looked. My husband’s friend who I would have not expected to eat any chocolate-covered strawberries because of how healthy he eats ended up eating two. I even let my kids eat a couple for breakfast because they’re somewhat healthy, right? I mean, the main part is a strawberry and that is definitely a breakfast food.

But what we didn’t realize is this evening, after I fed my family chocolate-covered strawberries from Shari’s Berries for breakfast, we’d actually receive another package of not only Shari’s Berries but some flowers from Pro Flowers as well!

When I found out that some blogger friends were receiving their packages and it was flowers and berries, I waited and waited and waited until I finally found something on my porch!

DSC_0159

DSC_0161

So I opened it immediately and my family were already trying to get to the berries.

DSC_0166

I just wanted the flowers but they had to stay wrapped up for at least 8-12 hours so I kept them in their little sleeve.

And then the next morning I unwrapped them and this is what they look like now. And yes, I know, I’m not supposed to keep them on a windowsill to get direct light but in my defense, this window doesn’t usually get direct light and you know it’s been snowy outside so it’s been cloudy so they’ve been okay. But I do take them down if it gets too light and yes, they sit next to our knives.

These flowers were absolutely gorgeous and reminded me of the days when my husband used to always get me lilies from Pro Flowers for Valentine’s Day, which, by the way, is soon approaching.  This might be a good time to start planting those seeds in your significant other’s heads about sending you some flowers!

In case you’re wanting to know more about their products, here’s some great ones to view.  These are mostly for the holidays but I wouldn’t mind getting these at any time through the year.

Shari’s Berries:

  • Handmade Christmas Cake Pops
  • Swizzled Strawberries – The first picture is of the Full Dozen Gourmet Dipped Fancy Strawberries and they were my favorite – worth every penny!
  • Christmas Strawberries

Pro Flowers:

Playdate with Salt Lake City + Discount

0

I was recently at the UCCU Family Fest and a man handed me a flier about Playdate with Salt Lake City.  I was intrigued and am just the type of person who is always curious about what people are offering on fliers (so yes, they do work!) and so I looked up Playdate with Salt Lake City.  The first thing I noticed was that they were covering a lot ground.  They are absolutely right when they say Provo to Ogden and Daybreak to Park City.  This book has obviously taken these two great mothers many, many hours to research all of these places and then put this book together!

Playdate with Salt Lake City is a book with 200 different activities to enjoy with your children.  It has parks, museums, and other fun places to visit.  If you live in Salt Lake, this is definitely a great book for you, however, like I mentioned, they have covered other areas including some activities in Utah County!

The book is separated into 20 different sections and each activity has the hours, admission, and other relevant information you may want to know.  It also has a little “Just Around the Corner” section at the bottom so if you’re already at the activity and want to go to another one, you can quickly know what is nearby!

In the back of the book, there is an Appendix with more resources and other ways to look up your favorite places or to see what else you can do with your kids.

If you’re like me, always looking for a good activity to do with my kid, or like me in that I travel up to Salt Lake all of the time and then am not quite sure where anything is when the kids need to get out and play at a playground, then this book is for you.

Discount:  Use the code “utahmoms20” to receive a 20% discount on the book.  You can only get this book online currently.  This code is good through January 15, 2014.

Utah Valley Moms was provided with a book in exchange for a review and to encourage readers to buy the book.  All opinions are our own.

The Cat’s Pajamas & Honey Bunches of Oats

0

Utah Valley Moms was invited to a blogger event and received gifts. All opinions are our own.

A few other local bloggers and I attended a blogger breakfast where we played games, ate some food, and danced … all in our new The Cat’s Pajamas jammy jams (that’s what we sometimes call pajamas at our house). The Cat’s Pajamas is a company who obviously makes pajamas, but these are no ordinary pajamas. No. These pajamas are all made in the USA, are comfy cozy, and have some very unique and fun designs on them.

I believe that all of us bloggers received different pajamas. I had a couple of favorites. Mine, of course. I was sporting some dogs. I also liked a flowery one a fellow blogger was wearing. But honestly, one blogger had sushi pajamas. Um, yeah. Fantastic.

We lounged around in our jammer jams (another term we call our pajamas) and they were so comfortable! On a side note, I only got about 3 hours of sleep the night before this event and so I was exhausted. Putting on these jammy jams was like rolling into my blanket. I could have taken a nap right then and there if I wasn’t so paranoid about other bloggers putting stickers on me … it was just a game we were playing, don’t even worry about it.

We played other games, as well. It reminded me of sleepovers when I was younger. Getting into jammy jams and just playing games with the girls. And laughing. A lot.

The bloggers and I ate some yummy breakfast as well. Thank goodness, too, because all I had was one-third of a banana as I rushed out the door. We enjoyed some common breakfast foods including Honey Bunches of Oats. So yummy!

Then it came time for dancing. As many who know me know, I love dancing like I’m dancing in the mirror and nobody is watching. It’s that crazy and random. But when I heard we were dancing for a camera, something that could make that moment last forever, I was pretty hesitant. I mean, haven’t my friends and family been punished enough by my dancing?! Now we’re going to enter the Honey Bunches of Oats “Smile While You Shake It” contest. This contest is giving out $500 Visa gift cards every week until June 16, 2014 and you can reenter every week! So without further ado, here’s Jessie‘s video (I’m in the first part holding both boxes of cereal):

So, now that you’re wishing you had our sweet dance moves and could wear pajamas like us, here’s the info so you can buy some of your own and enter the contest:
The Cat’s Pajamas
Smile While You Shake It

Discount: Use the code “HONEY” to get 10% off of full-priced sleepwear items purchased at The Cat’s Pajamas. This offer is good through June 2014, just long enough for you to get some and smile while you shake it for the camera!

Winner of Blu-Ray Giveaway

Congrats to Kayla T. on winning one blu-ray!

By the way, random story, Kayla actually married a guy who I grew up with in my neighborhood. Well, not really “grew up with” but knew as I was getting older. It’s fun when I randomly find people I know who are Utah Valley Moms followers!

If you’re here for the giveaways, expect some more great ones this upcoming year!
