Review: Asphalt Materials

0

Utah Valley Moms was provided materials from Asphalt Materials, however, all opinions are our own.

When we moved into our home we had very little landscaping and what we did have had to be ripped out and replaced.  So over the years we have, little by little, been landscaping our yard.  Most of what we have done we have done ourselves and Asphalt Materials is a great company for people who want to landscape themselves.  They have so many products: mulch, top soil, compost, and rocks, among other things.  Check out all of their products and services here.  I was able to try out some of their garden box mix for some raised beds I just built. The dirt is great. It is a great blend and works perfect for raised beds. They have so many different options for things. I can’t wait to go back and get some of their beautiful rocks for other landscaping projects I have planned. One other very nice thing about Asphalt Materials is that they will load into pick up trucks which is great for DIY landscapers that don’t have access to dump trucks or trailers. Many landscaping places won’t load into pickup trucks so for me having them load into a pickup truck was a huge benefit. (Since that is all I had access to.) They have lots of different options for landscaping and their prices are very good.

Asphalt Materials also hosts FREE classes every spring.  These sort of classes are awesome and Asphalt Materials has tons of different class options to choose from. This year they had lots of classes from landscaping to raised bed gardens. You can see a full list of the classes they had this year here.  Although their classes are already over for this year Asphalt Materials is already starting to plan next years classes.  They would like to know what free classes people would like to attend so leave us a comment letting us know what classes would interest you.  Then check out Asphalt Materials class schedule in January so you’ll know what classes they have scheduled.

Customer Value Package: $30 for only $15 at Taylor Maid + More + Giveaway

utah valley momsCustomer Value Package has a great deal for Taylor Maid.  For only $15, you get $30 to spend at Taylor Maid plus a whole lot of other coupons.

I recently acquired a Customer Value Taylor Maid Package and went to the Pleasant Grove Taylor Maid (200 E. State Street).  I have walked past the Taylor Maid in Provo and have only seen costumes in the windows so when I walked into Pleasant Grove’s Taylor Maid and saw how chic it was with absolutely no costumes, I was confused.  The ladies at the front desk asked me if they could help me find something and embarrassingly, I turned around, said I was at the wrong place, and walked out the front door.  Confused, I called my husband and realized that I was indeed at the correct place so now I had to turn around and walk back in the front door and confess I was wrong.  I did and one lady, Kirstin, helped me find my way around the store.  The costumes were there, they were just downstairs.  The whole top floor was full of beauty products and one customer was even getting her hair done!

The thing I love about Customer Value Package’s Taylor Maid package is that for only $15, you have $30 to spend which basically means everything is 50% off up to $30.  I was able to get a shampoo apron for my husband and for my kid’s for when I cut their hair and some transparent tape to keep my dresses where I want them.  My kids went crazy getting little products like stickers for nails, scrubbers, and lip gloss.utah valley moms

I absolutely love this package.  My kids had a blast choosing a few random things and I was able to get a few things I’ve needed for a while for half the price!  There are also plenty of salon discounts in the package that will be fun to take advantage of soon!

A Tremendous Opportunity for Utah Veterans

0

Author: Whitney Hollingshead

If you have ever known someone personally who has served in a war, you know how difficult life can be for any soldier who returns home.  Or maybe you even know children in a military family that have lost a parent.  The consequences of war are far reaching and often touch very close to home.

Many veterans are diagnosed with PTSD.  So what is PTSD?  According to the National Institute of Mental Health, PTSD is the abbreviation for post-traumatic stress disorder.  Post-traumatic stress disorder is characterized as an anxiety disorder that occurs after an individual has gone through an emotional trauma of an extreme nature.  Many individuals suffering from PTSD experience the traumatic events over and over again through nightmares, flashbacks, or even disturbing thoughts.  Other symptoms and challenges are also closely connected to PTSD.  As a result, the individual’s daily routine can be greatly disrupted and they may have a difficult time participating in “normal life”.

One of the best ways to help those with PTSD is to involve them in activities that by nature are the exact opposite of situations that produce anxiety.  One of the activities that is rising in popularity as a way to help those with PTSD is fishing.

Have you ever heard of piscatorial therapy?  In everyday terms, piscatorial therapy is using fishing as a form of therapy.  Fishing integrates social camaraderie, mental relaxation, and low-impact exercise.  As a result, many consider fishing an anxiolytic, or an intervention method that suppresses anxiety.  After all, fisherman are known for enjoying the serenity and solitude found on a lake, river, or pond.  An “anxious fisherman” is very hard to picture in real life.

Fishing by nature, is a very relaxing activity; however, if you ask any fisherman if fishing is boring, they will be quick to answer that fishing is not boring.  Perhaps this is because every once and a while a fisherman will get a fish to bite which leads to a surge of adrenaline, which is then followed by a sense of accomplishment when a fish finally gets reeled in.

As mentioned above, another benefit of fishing is the opportunity for social interaction.  Spending time in a stress-free environment with others who have experienced similar hardships is really therapeutic.  For veterans, being on a boat with other veterans is a great way to be reminded that they are not alone in the challenges they face, while enjoying the other natural benefits that fishing has to offer.

Several individuals, groups, and organizations across the country are taking notice of the tremendous benefits that fishing excursions can have for veterans.  In fact, both the University of Utah and the Salt Lake City Veteran’s Affairs office were involved in a 2009 study that concluded that veterans who participated in a two-day three-night fly fishing residential retreat showed significant improvement in relation to their PTSD symptoms.  While this study focused on a specific program, the overall benefits associated with veterans who are able to go fishing for any length of time are worth noting.

The great news is you don’t have to look very far to find an incredible fishing opportunity for veterans in Utah.

Hand in Hand Outdoors - Image #1

Steve Henline has spent most of his life on the water in a fishing vessel.  He spent his career as a guide on many fishing excursions.  Steve has a passion for teaching others to fish and loves to spend time on the water with others.  After a lot of time, thought, and help from others, Steve Henline started an organization that would make it possible for veteran’s and individuals with disabilities to go fishing.

SONY DSCWhat makes Hand in Hand Outdoors so unique is that their fishing vessel is a custom pontoon boat that can accommodate multiple wheelchairs, in addition to other passengers.  Now veterans or individuals with disabilities can have the opportunity to go fishing on the lake.  This is a dream come true for those who once loved to fish, but have since been confined to a wheelchair for many years.  And the opportunity is also extended to children with disabilities, as well as children who have lost a parent to war.  How cool is that?

The boat heads to the lake multiple times a week all summer long and there is never a shortage of passengers.  Last year 550 people boarded Freedom’s Dream for their own fishing adventure.  Hand in Hand Outdoors works closely with the Veteran’s Hospital and makes sure there is a licensed psychiatrist on board if needed.

Check out this cool video that shares more about Hand in Hand Outdoors.  You can also visit their website for more information, to find out how you can help, or to get additional information for those who can directly benefit from an excursion on Freedom’s Dream.

Review: EcoCarpet Cleaning

0

EcoCarpet is a local Utah Valley carpet cleaning company who travels to various areas around Northern Utah.  We had heard good things about them and were excited to hear that they were going to be able to clean our carpets.

My family and I recently adopted a dog.  For those who know me and know how crazy I am about cleanliness you may find it weird that I allowed a very messy, furry dog into our house.  To be honest, I’m still a little in shock myself.  But it happened and the floors haven’t been the same since.  I vacuum a few times a week, mop the floors a few times a week, and sweep a few times a day.  (I know, I’m out of control.)  So I was excited to finally have some professionals come do some of the hard work.

As Utah Carpet Cleaners, they were able to visit my home in Orem (which is actually where they are based out of) and clean the carpets of my house.  We bought a little carpet cleaner about two years ago but it has never had a professional carpet cleaning so I was excited to have it done.

Jason from EcoCarpet visited our place and was great!  He was friendly and was more than willing to answer all of the questions we had about the service and about the company.  He explained to us that EcoCarpet does carpet cleaning in Utah and will not upsale people on services.  In fact, Jason has talked customers out of services and products that he does not believe they need which is saving the customer money!

My worries were that after the carpet had dried, there would be a residue from the carpet cleaning.  However, after the carpet dried, the carpets felt so clean and better than I had ever felt them before.  Plus, they smelled clean!  There was a slight smell of carpet cleaning but I have smelled worst before and so the smell of clean carpets and the feeling of clean carpets was perfect!

I enjoyed having EcoCarpet clean our carpet.  They were friendly and their cleaning was effective.  EcoCarpet will be our carpet cleaning company from now on!
