Utah County Fireworks Displays 2014

1

Utah Valley has a few locations to view fireworks this 4th of July.  The Utah County fireworks displays are as follows:

Thanksgiving Point Fireworks: July 4th, Gates at Electric Park open by 5:30pm. Fireworks start at approximately 10:00pm. Bring a blanket and enjoy some food and fun, as there will be concessions and vendors present. Guests are invited to bring their own picnics, however, no dogs are allowed.

America’s Freedom Festival, Stadium of Fire, at the LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on July 4th. There will be the concert in the stadium and following the concert, usually sometime around 10:30 pm, the fireworks will begin. You will want to reserve some seating to see the firework display early because room to sit and enjoy the fireworks fills up fast!

Where can you see the fireworks from the Stadium of Fire? A favorite location is on the hill in front of the Provo LDS Temple (900 E. and Temple View Drive). The grass in front of the Marriott Center on BYU campus is also a great place to see them. Other locations include Rock Canyon Park, grassy areas near Seven Peaks, the grass in front of Glenwood apartments (University Avenue and University Parkway), and hiking up to the Y on the mountain. Locations we’re not sure about include a school near 2320 N and 650 E. and on BYU campus. Remember, to find a good location, you must stake out your spot early. Many people arrive during the afternoon and early evening and will stay. Also, traffic gets congested after the fireworks so plan in time to possibly sit in a lot of traffic. Know of other good locations? Let us know!

Modkini Review

0

Utah Valley Moms was provided with samples of the ModKini to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

The weather has been  up and down here in Utah but it seems like it’s finally hit a point to where it’s just hot!  For us, that means it’s time to break out the swimsuits and get into the water as much as possible!

The one thing about swimming however, is that I am not a fan of swimsuit shopping.  I’m not one who likes to show my tummy so I either need to go with these overpriced tankinis or one-piece swimsuits which I’ve worn most of my life but when it comes time to go to the bathroom, well, I’m not a fan of the one-pieces.  I’ve always loved so many of the designs of bikinis but if I bought them, I probably would never wear them.

That, however, was until I was introduced to Modkini.  Modkini is a piece of fabric that attaches to the top of the bikini to make it a tankini.  Here is what Melissa, the founder, has to say about the new product:

-A more Custom fit. Find the best supportive Bikini and Pair it with a Modkini to create a Tankini.

-More Coverage. Flattering. Different size up top than in the middle

-Bikinis have more style options, different fits and different Patterns. A Modkini allows you to take advantage of nearly all of them while still providing the coverage of a Tankini.

-Bikini tops allow you to accentuate your “Assets” considerably better than a Tankini or Onepiece. Just add the Modkini to get the coverage you want

-Transfers from one Bikini to another. Not permanently attached to Bikini. Use your Bikini for some events. Add the ModKini for others.

-Cost effective. Bikinis can be found cheaper.

Empress Theatre: The Addams Family Review

0

This article is written by Christa, a contributor for Utah Valley Moms.

Before a few weeks ago, when Kim asked me if I’d like to review a play on behalf of UVM, I’d never heard of The Empress Theatre in Magna. It’s a bit of a drive for those of us in Utah County. However, if that doesn’t bother you, you’ll be charmed by the character of the building and by the obvious love of the theater displayed by the crew and cast.

I viewed The Addams Family, a musical fresh off its recent national tour. The Empress is the first playhouse in Utah to perform this play.
Being familiar with The Addams Family films, I imagined they would take the plot of one of the movies and put it to song. Luckily, I was wrong. The show revolves around a love story between Wednesday Addams and an Ohio-raised, extremely normal Lucas Beineke. Lucas and Wednesday arrange a dinner for their families, who could not be more different, and hilarity ensues.

The Addams Family is a very witty musical that supplies good laughs. The only thing that would have made it more funny would have been to arrange more scenes with Grandma Addams, played by Rossy Thrall. She was hilarious and stole the show for me.
Be warned that there is a little language and innuendo. This one if probably better suited for a date night without the kids The tickets are also reasonably priced at $10. If you love community theater and are interested in checking out a new musical, this is one I’d recommend.

Christa had the opportunity to view this play sponsored by the Empress Theatre. All opinions are her own.

Save or Splurge? When It’s OK to Treat Yourself

0

Author: Mary Kremer

Are you having trouble reigning in your spending? Or maybe you’re like many of us and just have no set monthly budget. You don’t know if you have a spending problem because, frankly, you don’t pay much attention.

Most people aren’t shopaholics. They don’t drop a couple hundred dollars without thinking about the consequences. However, many of us will spend ten dollars here and twenty dollars there and not realize how quickly our splurges add up. Thankfully, keeping your spending habits in check is as simple as becoming more aware of how you spend.

Here are some tips to help you create a simple budget, set some savings goals, and still have money for fun this summer:

When to Save or Splurge Image 2
Take a Look at Your Current Situation

Before you make any changes, you need to know what your current spending habits look like. Go through your bank statements for the last month and ask yourself:

  • What charges are recurring? Do I have monthly subscriptions? How much do they add up to?
  • How much money did I spend on fun (and secondary) activities? (i.e. restaurants, shopping, movies, coffee breaks, etc.)
  • How much money did I spend on unexpected expenses? (i.e. car troubles, necessary clothing, medical expenses, etc.)

Now, add all of these charges up. If you can, go through the past several months so you can get an idea of the average amount of money you spend on non-necessities every month. Currently, what percentage of your income is spent on these kinds of expenses?

When to Save or Splurge Image #3
Create a Simple Budget

Now that you know what your situation looks like, it’s time to create a basic budget. Though there is always a little flux in every monthly budget, you can create a framework to give you an idea of how much you should be saving/spending. Sit down with your bills and pay stubs and:

  • Deduct your primary expenses (rent/mortgage, utilities, car payment, medical expenses, gas and groceries, daycare, etc.) from your monthly income
  • Deduct 10-15% of your income and put it into savings
  • Take 3-5% of your income (if you have that much left over), and devote it to “fun money” and miscellaneous expenses

If you have excess money after this point, consider putting a little more money every month toward paying off any debts you currently have. Or, you could take a portion of the money and create a second savings account specifically for unexpected expenses, or even vacations.

Know How Much You Can Spend

Once you’ve got a basic idea of how much you should be spending every month on little splurges, compare it to what you’ve spent in the past. If there’s a significant difference between the two, you’ll need to pay extra attention to cutting down where you can. To help you out:

  • Cut down on unnecessary expenses. Take a look at your current subscriptions and memberships. Do you need Netflix and Hulu and Amazon Prime? Though cheap, those costs can quickly add up every month. Pick one or cancel them all.
  • Divide up your monthly “fun money” into weekly allowances. Take this money out in cash and carry it with you instead of using a credit card. This will help you keep track of your expenses.
  • Let your friends know about your goals. If you have a weekly lunch date with your friends and your budget only allows for a monthly lunch date, tell them that. You’ll likely be able to find another activity that will cost less and still bring you all together. It pays to have a little social support when you’re changing your habits.
  • Decide if you’d like to have a big goal to work toward (like an end-of-the-summer vacation), or if you’d rather have a monthly amount you’re allowed to spend on yourself.

When to Save or Splurge Image #1
Set Some Goals

Make a summer’s saving plan. Looking at your proposed budget, decide how much you would like to save every month. Set some goals (they don’t all have to be boring) on how you’d like to use any excess money. Think about a few of these options…

  • Do you have credit card debt or student loans? Create a payment plan to make some headway with that debt this summer.
  • Is there somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit? Create a vacation savings plan and work toward going somewhere great at the end of the summer.
  • Would you like to move into a house by the end of the year? Or maybe it’s a newer car you’d like. Start saving for a downpayment.
  • Are you in over your head? Meet with a professional like Rulon T. Burton to discuss your options for financial recovery and set some goals together.

Once you’ve decided on a few goals, set a monthly amount you’d like to achieve. Then, reward yourself every month if you’ve reached your savings goal. This can be as simple as eating out or doing some shopping, or you could be frugal and rent a movie or give yourself a pedicure. The key is to make your savings fun.

Have Fun

Setting and achieving goals (especially financial ones) can be extremely liberating and, dare I say, fun? When you know where your money is going, you don’t have to feel guilty for spending money on yourself. So, take a little time to sort things out this summer and have some fun doing it. You’ll thank yourself and your checkbook will thank you, too.

Favorite Feature of the Honda Pilot

0

Ken Garff of Orem has let me try out a 2014 Honda Pilot and it has been a pretty good experience!  Although there are a lot of good things about the Pilot like the seat warmers, backup camera, and great screen that tells you all about what you’re listening to, gas mileage, etc, my favorite part is how easy it is to get car seats in and out of the Pilot.  It’s sort of a silly thing, but when you have two young children who need these huge bulky car seats, it’s a pain when cars don’t make it easy to get them in and out.  It literally takes us about 15 seconds to put in a car seat or take it out which is great when you have an 8-seater and want the grandparents to join you for dinner.  Everyone can pile into one car, car seats can be moved quickly, and there is plenty of room for everyone!

Fun at the Local Pool

0

Author: Whitney Hollingshead

Spending time at the local pool is a must-do for most American families. Before we present some really fun pool games, let’s go over some safety basics that every parent needs to enforce when heading to the pool this summer:
imsis586-049
Pool Safety Tips

1. Lifeguards are not babysitters. Children should always have adult supervision when they are near any body of water.

2. If you are going to the pool in a group, at least one adult must be the designated supervisor to watch all of the children in the water without any other distractions present.

3. Children should never push other children at the pool, hold them under water, or jump on top of them.

4. Keep sick children home from the pool. Make sure your children always wash their hands after using the bathroom (especially before entering the pool).

5. Do some research to determine the best flotation device for each of your non-swimmers. Click here for a comprehensive list to help get you started.

AA051771

Now that we’ve covered some important safety tips, check out these fun games to play in the pool:

Flamingo Dosey Doe Chain

In order to play this game, all children need to be in the shallow end of the pool where their feet can touch and they can still keep their heads above water. One child is chosen to be the flamingo dancer. All of the other children become flamingoes. All flamingoes must stand on one foot in the water and hold both hands on their hips. The flamingo dancer must stand on one foot, but is free to move their arms around.

The flamingo dancer moves toward another flamingo and tries to link their arm through the arm of a flamingo. The flamingo can try to move away, but must stay on one foot and keep their arms on their hips. If the flamingo dancer is successful, the caught flamingo must stay linked to the dancer; however, the other arm is now free to move. The pair then moves to link up to another flamingo.

If any player falls off of one foot or uses the other foot, then the player is out. If any player, other than the flamingo dancer, uses their arms to move, then that player is out.

Play continues until all of the flamingoes are caught on the same chain, the flamingo dancer fails to stay on one foot, or all players not connected to the chain are already out of the game.

Hot Beach Ball

You’ve probably played some version of the game hot potato. This game is very similar. Give your kids a beach ball or balloon once they are all in the pool. The object of the game is to work as a team to keep the ball in the air and out of the water. The children pretend that the ball is also too hot to hold and must keep the ball moving quickly.

If a child holds on to the ball or knocks the ball into the water, then that child is out. Play continues until one child remains.

Steamboat Races

In order to play this game, each child will need some passengers for their boat. You can use rubber duckies, dolls, or action figures. You will need multiple passengers available for each child.

The first race uses only one passenger per child. Each child holds one of their passengers against their belly as they move to a floating position on their back. A judge yells “Go!” and each child must remain on their back and kick their feet to propel their body as a steamboat across the pool. The children cannot use their arms while crossing the pool. They also cannot hold on to the passenger in any way. The passenger must stay balanced on their belly. If the passenger falls off, the child must retrieve the passenger and travel from the retrieval point to the end of the course according to the normal rules.

The first child to steamboat across the pool on their back while carrying their passenger to the other side is the winner.

If one passenger becomes easy to manage for all of the children, increase the difficulty by adding an additional passenger for each child. You can continue to increase the number of passengers until it becomes too difficult.

Keep a close eye on your kids at the pool this summer and encourage them to try new games in the water. Hours of fun await your family at the local pool!

Utah UPSTART: Additional Openings for this FREE In-Home Preschool Program

0

UPSTART, a free in-home preschool program for families in Utah, has successfully prepared more than 7,000 children for kindergarten. It’s been extremely successful: participating children often enter kindergarten already above grade level! Not to mention, 99.8% of parents say they felt participating in UPSTART was beneficial.

This program is unique in that it uses award-winning Waterford Institute learning software to teach preschool-aged children reading, math and science, for just 15 minutes a day, five days a week.

Recently, legislators approved a five-year extension for UPSTART and even expanded the program’s funding to allow for 5,000 children annually—that’s more than three times UPSTART’s previous annual headcount of about 1,500 children! The additional funding and extension starts late summer to kick off the 2014-15 preschool year.

And there’s great news– UPSTART has more opening available!

To see if your family qualifies, be sure to fill out the pre-registration information form now!
