Color Me Mine

Let’s be honest, every now and then we really need to get away from the kids and just spend some time for ourselves. One great deal I found is at Color Me Mine. On Saturdays after 6:00 pm, studio fees are 2 for the price of 1. That means you can take a spouse, date, or friend and pay half the price as usual.

Color Me Mine has other special nights as well. Monday nights are family nights from 5:00 – 9:00 pm. Studio Fees are $3 per person. There are other great specials including Mommy & Me and Service Day.

Color Me Mine is a great place to create your own dishes, cups, and other decorative things. A studio fee (like an entrance fee) is charged, then you choose the piece you would like to paint, paint it, decorate it, and then leave it with them so they can glaze and fire the piece. Once it’s done, you can pick it up and take it home!

Family Night: Service

0

With the first day fast approaching, if not already here for some, it seems as though we’re all trying to get in a lot of things before the 9 months of school takes up most of our time again. Swimming, games, activity centers, and sleepovers are some of the top things kids try to squeeze in before the first day of school but I was impressed with one family I saw last week who were doing a unique family night activity – service.

There is a long chain-link fence that spans the width of about a half of a block on a near-by street. It has weeds growing all around it, collects lots of trash that is blowing around, and in general, just doesn’t look good. Last week, one family of four were outside with gloves and trash bags, cleaning up the side of the fence. I don’t think it was their yard, as their car was parked along the side of the road and one girl didn’t look enthused at all to be there, but they were making a bit of our city look a little better. They were only there for about an hour or two and when they were done, I couldn’t believe it. It looked completely different than it had earlier that day and made the side of the street look one thousand times better.

My suggestion for family night isn’t to necessarily go out and clean up someone else’s trash but just to keep in mind that there are a lot of people out there that could use our help. Christmas time is usually the time when we think of others; however, I challenge you to think of those who may be starting school with no new clothes and no school supplies or those who may be eating bread every day for every meal because that’s as much as their budget allows for food. Because I can promise, by helping others, you will feel a million times better.

White Noise

0

White noise apparently helps a lot of babies out there.  For my daughter, well, she doesn’t like it so much.  We never really used any with her.  I was a strong believer in quite a bit of noise during her naps so she would get used to loud noises.  And for the most part, she does really well.  She slept for 2 1/2 hours one time while lava rock was being torn out of our basement living room.  It was bothering me – I couldn’t nap – but she slept right through it.

A few weeks ago, however, I had had it with her crying so I found this awesome white noise maker on the internet and left the laptop in her room with her.  I don’t know whether it worked or not but I loved the whole idea of this free white noise.  I could adjust the volume and change the type of white noise.

If you are in need of white noise, I would definitely suggest Simply Noise.

Family Night: Planet Play

0

The family and I went to Planet Play in Draper a while back and although I am no longer a kid, my husband and I were running around like we were, excited about everything.

Planet Play is a large building with many activities and includes a Pizza Pie Cafe – a pizza, salad, and pasta buffet. Some of the activities include laser tag, mini golf, go-karts, bumper cars, and mini bowling.

I didn’t actually do any of the activities since my husband and I were a bit obsessed with earning as many tickets as possible on the Deal or No Deal arcade game but other people we were with had a lot of fun playing laser tag and mini bowling. I was a little disappointed in their go-karts because they had a very small track and I would have been motion sick if I had ridden on them, but other than that, the activities looked like a lot of fun.

I also enjoyed the way the buffet was set up, although the food was not my favorite. When you pay, you pay for the buffet and you can also buy money cards with the buffet, but as far as I know, you can’t get in unless you pay for food. But it’s perfect because although the games and food are very separate, you can walk between both areas any time you would like. It seemed perfect because the kids were able to eat a couple of slices of pizza, play some games, and go back and finish eating dinner. Not only that, but you are able to get drinks any time as well which was really refreshing after working up quite a sweat with some of those activities.

On the flip side, I don’t necessarily enjoy the prices, especially compared to the Pizza Pie Cafe I’ve been to in Provo and the deals I’ve been able to receive there. I feel like they are a bit high for just the buffet, but if you plan to buy the buffet and game card all in one, then you start to get a better deal. Game cards are really nice, however, because they act sort of like a debit card – you put an amount of money onto the card and swipe it each time you want to play something. Then the amount of the activity is automatically taken from the card. There’s no worry about lost cards or tickets – the number of tickets are even kept on your card.

Each weekday, Planet Play also has some fun deals. I think the $7 Tuesday that includes the buffet and a $5 money card is my favorite.

Photography Giveaway – Closed

*10/20 – Missed this giveaway?  That’s okay.  Mention this post anyway and receive 50-75% off of any session.  Please inquire for exact pricing!  Session must be booked by 03/31/2012.

Although while growing up, my family never did family photos, I always have this great desire to have family photos done around this time of year.  I start searching through all the lists of local photographers, trying to decide which one would best suit our needs and price range.  And the other catch?  I love trying new photographers so whether I enjoyed the one from the previous year or not, I will still spend hours looking through different photographer’s websites.

If you’re like me and love when photographers do session giveaways, then you’re in luck.  Corrigan Photography is giving away a one-hour photo session to one lucky UCM reader.  The winner may choose which sort of session they would like and may choose the date (given availability).

There are a few ways you can enter to win.  The mandatory entry is to tell us about a favorite location of yours that you love to have pictures taken of you at or tell us where you would want your pictures taken.  My favorite places are fields – there is just something so serene and beautiful about a huge field.  When I was young and would walk through my Grandma’s field, I used to dream of owning a farm with acres and acres of land with lots of yummy fruits, vegetables, and perhaps just a huge field so I could chase my dog around.

Other ways to enter:

  • “Like” Corrigan Photography on Facebook
  • Blog, Facebook, and/or Tweet about this giveaway and include the link to this giveaway (https://utahvalleymoms.com/2011/08/photography-giveaway/)
  • “Like” UCM on Facebook

Prizes:

  • Free one-hour photo session for one winner
  • Free 30-minute photo session for one winner
  • $75 off one photo session for all who enter

Corrigan Photography is offering a 10% discount to any sessions for all booked sessions made before August 31, 2011.  And of course, if a session has already been booked and you win, your session will be free.  Please mention this post to receive the discount.

Giveaway ends on Friday, August 19 at 11:59 pm MST.  Winner will be chosen via random.org and will be notified by email and announced on Monday, August 22, 2011.  Photography location must be in Salt Lake or Utah County; additional fees will apply for other areas.  See the Contest Disclosure for the complete rules.  And sorry family, you may not enter.

No compensation was received from Corrigan Photography.

Spotlight: Harmon’s Grocery

0

Until I recently moved, I had never been a fan of Harmon’s. It was always too expensive and I never thought it was worth it. Now that I live a short 5-minute walk away from Harmon’s, I go there all the time to pick up items for lunch or dinner, or even if I want to go for a walk, but I don’t want to have to walk outside.

The prices for some things are still expensive but there are two main pros that I like about Harmon’s:
1. Bag credit: I don’t know how many other stores do this, but Harmon’s gives you 5 cents for every reusable bag that you take in to use for your bought goods. It’s not much but it usually covers the price I paid for tax and sometimes a little more. Besides, something is better than nothing.
2. Produce: Before Harmon’s, I always bought my produce at Smith’s or Winco where I could find good deals, however, my produce would go bad quickly and sometimes I wasn’t even sure if I really liked the quality of my purchases. Sadly, I had no idea that there was better food out there … until now. Harmon’s seems to be pretty good at purchasing quality produce and quite often they have locally grown produce as well. For example, this morning I was able to purchase cantaloupe grown in Hurricane. And it is wonderful! Not only that, but my lettuce lasts for a couple of weeks – I’ve had lettuce in the fridge that I bought 15 days ago and it is still crisp! It’s amazing!

Employees of Harmon’s are also extremely friendly. Almost all of them always say hi to me and the ones working in the produce section are more than willing to help you find some good-tasting fruit if needed, too!

*All thoughts are my own. I received no compensation.
