Love this little cardigan – love that it could go with anything!
And a cute little girly necklace and bracelet to help accent any outfit.

The thing I love about Zulily is there are clothes for all sorts of styles and this just happens to be my favorite style to dress my little girl in – something in style, something simple, and something that just screams she’s a girl, because after all, she is. (And she loves everything “girl.”)

Cardio Barre Quarry Bend

1

I stole this photo from Instagram:

… because we went to Cardio Barre Quarry Bend in Sandy for a Bloggers’ Night where we worked our little buns off with a cardio barre workout.

I had never been to any sort of barre workout but as my blogging friend had, and is a dancer, well, she rocked it. I, on the other hand, spent 25% of the time staring at the instructors thinking, “Wait, what are they doing and how are they doing that?”

And this is one of the few reasons why I was anxious before arriving and felt like I was going to throw up the ice cream I had just eaten … or maybe I felt sick because I ate ice cream right before exercising … it’s a tough call.

However, our cute instructor was energetic, helpful (helped correct us when we weren’t quite doing it right or helped to stretch us out just a little bit further), and made us feel excited about our cardio barre workout we were doing.

The workout was just as I had expected it to be. Hard. We used many ballet techniques and incorporated them into a workout to help strengthen and lengthen our muscles. There were squats, lifts, and lots of times when our arms and/or legs were up in the air, however, it was so fun and so much more interesting because of the ballet spin it has to it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone, no matter what age, size, gender, and intensity workout level they are currently enjoying. It’s unique, it’s fun, and it works out the body well!

My favorite part was the beginning when I looked around the room and all of us looked like ballet dancers with our arms up over our heads, our legs out, and everyone was still smiling. The toughest part for me was all of the leg workouts because of my bad hips (wow, I sound old). In fact, I’m pretty sure that we exercised muscles in my thighs that never get worked out. So the leg workouts were tough but we did a lot with weights while working our arms and those two seemed to be the times when we were all really feeling the burn. I chose the three-pound weights because I figured I work out with 10 pound weights at home, so three shouldn’t be too bad, but trust me, by the end, it was bad. At the end of the workout, I still was having a hard time holding my phone.

Both my friend and I commented on how much we loved the actual building. It looks so chic and I was impressed with how clean it was inside. The location is great, too. It’s in Quarry Bend in Sandy, 9125 S. Village Shop Drive in the shopping area with all of the other restaurants and businesses. (Fun fact, I lived just minutes away from that area for 18 years of my life while growing up and it used to be called the Gravel Pit because the place was completely empty of everything except gravel, weeds, and the occasional tractor or whatever was “working” in the pit. And now look at this place! It’s booming!)

And as a mom, my absolute favorite part of the whole studio is their kids’ room because they offer childcare while you exercise! I feel like one of the main reasons I can’t attend classes like these is because I have children and especially now that school is in session, who will watch my kids? But at Cardio Barre Quarry Bend, you can just take your kids with you to the classes, exercise, and have the comfort in knowing that your children are in the room next door being entertained.

Because this was a blogger event, there was a lot of Instagramming going on, so here are a few from our session (I stole them once again from Instagram, but really I just made it easier for you to follow these great local bloggers):

Utah Brazilian Festival 2013

0

On September 7th, Brazil will be in downtown Salt Lake City. It might be geographically impossible, but the best of the Brazilian Arts, Culture, Music and Cuisine will be at the 9th Annual Utah Brazilian Festival, a free event to the public.

Brought to you by the Viva Brazil Cultural Center and sponsors. The Festival holds lots of fun and laughter for the whole family. The “Samba Carnaval Parade” is the kick-off event beginning at 1pm. Drummers and dancers will be performing the original Brazilian Carnaval along with members of the community. They will catch everyone’s eye with their unique colorful costumes. Directed by Caio Castro, an artistic producer coming from Atlanta, the Samba Parade is always one of the highlights of the Utah Brazilian Festival.

The Festival will also feature two bands this year. A variety of Brazilian Music styles will be brought to you by “Batuke Brazil Band.” Coming from Florida, the band will be playing everything from Forró to Sertanejo to Axe to Brazilian Rock. One of the most famous rhythms known worldwide, the Bossa Nova, will be presented by “Evening in Brazil Band”, a local band composed of musicians and professors from Utah State University. Also on the stage, MC Magno Tubertine will keep the crowd excited presenting our special guests and connecting with the public.

Art Exhibits, Live Concerts, Inflatables, Face Painting, Parade, Capoeira, and other non-stop attractions. The Festival also holds an “Animal Show” featuring animals from the Rain Forest and South America. It includes a huge Anaconda and a Bird Show.
Joga Futebol LLC will get the public warmed up to the World Cup 2014 in Brazil. The organization is the sponsor for our mini soccer arena where kids and adults will be able to show off their soccer skills.

Taste of Brazil

The food court is always the most anticipated area in the Festival. Churrasco (Brazilian Barbecue), Feijoada (Traditional Black Beans Dish), Pão de Queijo (Cheese Bread), Coxinha (Chicken Filled Dumplings), Brigadeiros (Brazilian Fudge), Sonhos (Brazilian Doughnuts) and much more. The names are as popular as the flavors and most people know exactly what they want when it comes to Brazilian Food. Don’t miss this opportunity to taste delicious traditional dishes and desserts.

Arts

The Arts Exhibition will take place at the Cultural Hall (Gallivan Hall) where works from local Brazilian artists will be displayed. They will bring color and show different aspects of Brazilian art showcased through art and talent.

Workshops

The workshops are another interactive option to get to know the Brazilian Culture. Here are the available workshops during the event:

Capoeira – Once again Master Jamaika presents his Capoeira, the Brazilian Martial Art that began in the 16th Century. Known for quick and complex moves, using power, speed, and leverage for leg sweeps, Capoeira combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music.

Drumming and Samba – The “Batucada and Drumming” will be brought by Samba Fogo, a hands on project for kids and adults. Samba and afro Brazilian rhythms thru dance and movement will be taught by Lorin Hansen and other skilled dancers in our community.

Cantigas de Roda (Brazilian Traditional Folklore Songs, Rhymes and Games) – as part of the “Oral History Preservation Program” sponsored by Utah Arts and Museums, this workshop has the objective to expose children and their families to traditional Folklore songs, rhymes and games. They will be motivated to recover music and traditions that were once part of their parents and grandparents roots. Everyone is welcome to join us at “Ciranda Cirandinha” (Merry go round) and have lots of fun singing and learning.

“If you can’t go to Brazil, come to the Utah Brazilian Festival”

The 9th Annual Utah Brazilian Festival is presented by Viva Brazil Cultural Center and Tucano’s Brazilian Grill. The event this year is also sponsored by Joga Futebol LLC, Wells Fargo, Wilner & O’Reilly Law Firm, Zions Bank, Utah Division of Arts & Museums, Art Works, Salt Lake City Corporation, Zoo, Arts & Parks, Internexus and Adobe. It’s also supported by the Brazilian General Consulate of Los Angeles and several members of the community.

Thank you Enjoy Utah

·      Best Presentation
·      Best Hospitality

For more information or to buy tickets call the Chamber at 801.851.2555.

The best part of these tastings is that there is so much food that it might be a good idea to plan to take some home. There will be everything from appetizers to parts of main dishes to desserts. We found that going to all of the places that offered cold foods that would not last the heat of the day while we stood in line were the best places to go to first, but how you taste each company and in what order is completely up to you!

Freecycle

0

Have you heard of Freecycle before?

I had never tried it before until I desperately needed some hangers, so I thought I’d give it a shot and now I’m hooked.

Freecycle is a place where you can go to the website and find things within your community to give away or to receive … all for free. For example, I recently have given away books and clothes that are not worth trying to sell and that other people have found useful. I have received an amazing ceiling fan to keep us cool and a little food processor … I’m not really sure what you do with it, but I’m ready to learn and see if a larger one would be useful for my family. Currently, I have a post up looking for a double stroller.

And it’s that simple. You post, you reply, you give away, and you receive.

Isn’t that fantastic?!

So I suggest you sign up today to see what others in your area are getting rid of and maybe you can do some cleaning up too and get rid of some unwanted things. And when you really need something, a neighbor just might have it! You never know!

This show is a Utah favorite, and you’re going to have a ball. If you can think of it, chances are someone has it here at the Expo for a great deal. So grab your friends and make a day of it. It’s two days with hundreds of awesome businesses, good food, giveaways, cool things to buy, fun and more.

Color Me Rad 5K 2013, Utah Valley

0

Utah County, I am SO excited about this Color Me Rad 5K that is happening here in Utah Valley on Saturday, September 28 at Utah Valley University.  First, here’s a little information about the Color Me Rad 5K:

The Race

Color Me Rad is coming to a town near you with a tsunami of color that’ll make colored tears of joy run down your cheeks and will renew your will to live.

Color Me Rad is a 5K that fires off in a blaze of color bombs, color cannons, color mortars, and multi-toned courses that guarantee your outlook will be brighter, your boyfriend will be more affectionate, your boss will finally remember your name, the hair on your head will grow back and the hair on your back will fall out, and your gray outlook will turn green like a spring morning.

Historically, running has only been acceptable when trying to escape the law, personal responsibility, the truth, and grizzly bears.

Instead of running FROM something, get ready to run FOR something at this year’s Color Me Rad.

How it works

You’ll start off with a shirt as pure and white as your granddaddy’s dentures, and throughout the run, we’ll coat your chaffing thighs with Color Bombs of blue, green, pink, purple, and yellow until you come out like a tie-dyed hippy on the other side.

Each section of the run adds a new explosion of color to your clean, painter’s palate until you cross the finish line into a final blitzkrieg of color.

The color

You’re probably asking yourselves, “Is this really color being thrown at us or are the rainbows we’re seeing just God’s signal that it’ll never flood again?”

Glad you aksed. This isn’t just smoke and mirrors.  This is non-toxic, non-rash-inducing, Kroger branded, colored cornstarch.* With corn subsidized by the government and processed in the good o’l US of A, these blasts of starch will change your color and your demeanor but never your safety or health.

Ingredients: Corn starch and FD&C and/or D&C colors. Color safety information: Approved for use in foods, cosmetics and/or drugs. These products are not considered hazardous, 29 CFR 1910-1200.

One of my concerns was about children running in the race. Here’s what they have to say about it:  Everyone, young, small, old, foreign or domestic are welcome to participate. Those under 18 must bring a waiver signed by a parent or guardian to packet pick-up or race day and here’s the kicker…7 and under run for free! They won’t receive a race bib or t-shirt but they will be covered in color head to toe!  Also, those ages 7 and under run free with a paying adult!  However, they won’t get a t-shirt, racing bib, or sunglasses.  If you have other questions or concerns, their FAQ page has it all.

Color Me Rad also donates a portion of the proceeds to a charity – this time it just happens to be to scholarships for students attending Utah Valley University.

Now that you know about the Color Me Rad 5K, it’s time to sign up to register! Regular registration is open until September 6, 2013, so hurry and reserve your spot now. The race is Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Utah Valley University and the first wave of runners begin at 10 am.
