The Leonard “Body Worlds” Review

0

Body Worlds & The Cycle of Life will be on display at The Leonardo in Salt Lake City until March 8, 2015.

This exhibit actually holds a special place in my heart.  Back in 2007, my husband, then boyfriend, proposed to me shortly after going to the Body Worlds exhibit that was on display at The Leonardo.  Unfortunately, Body Worlds also reminds me of how many anatomy exams I failed but that’s beside the point.

Utah Valley Moms was given tickets in exchange for this post. All opinions are 100% our own.

BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life is the latest exhibition from physician and pioneering anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens.  As we age, we experience the body in different ways. At each stage of life, we seek new answers. This exhibit celebrates the wonders of the body in childhood, adulthood and across the arc of aging. More than 200 plastinates—real human specimens preserved through Dr. von Hagens’ invention, the remarkable process of Plastination—reveal the human body in all its stages and in all its conditions, from health to distress to disease.

At this exhibit guests get an up-close and personal viewing of what the human body actually looks like under all of that skin and hair.  We took my children and they were fascinated by the heart, the muscles, the bones, and the lungs.

The Leonardo recommends giving yourself about 60-90 minutes to view the exhibit.  My family and I walked through in about 20 minutes which left plenty of time for us to view some of the activities that are also in the museum.

The Leonardo + Discount

Leonardo da Vinci was an artist, an engineer, a scientist, an architect, a musician and a humanitarian, among many other things. One of his most important skills was learning how to learn. Leonardo’s famous curiosity was a more important tool than his paintbrush. By experimenting, questioning, and exploring the world around him, he asked questions nobody had ever asked before. And he found answers nobody found before him. He made no distinction between art and science and saw the interconnectedness of all things.

UVM was given tickets in exchange for this post.  All opinions are 100% our own.

The Leonardo was created to honor and embody the spirit of this Renaissance Man. We see the world as he saw it: full of wonders to be uncovered, always asking why? Our museum is a place where you can freely wander and wonder. Come and discover your inner genius, just like Leonardo did. Look around. Ask the big questions. Have fun. Get your hands busy. Welcome.

Mission Statement: We live in a rapidly-changing, highly connected world that asks each citizen to be more curious, more informed and more engaged. The Leonardo seeks to reflect and respond to this new world by creating an innovative, dynamic space that builds fluency and knowledge, ignites the creative imagination of visitors of all ages, and inspires them to see and act in new and powerful ways.

The Leonardo is a non-profit community-powered museum which opened in 2011.

Currently Body Worlds & The Cycle of Life is the main exhibit at The Leonardo.  You can get 50% off of the ticket price with the code “ARCHES.”  But hurry.  This exhibit closes on March 8, 2015!

How No Toys Strengthened Our Family

4

It was a Friday night and I had promised the kids a date night including pizza and a movie, however before starting the movie, my husband and I realized that toys were everywhere downstairs.

See, last year we moved into an amazing home – bedrooms upstairs, kitchen, dining rooms, and living areas on the main floor, and three bedrooms plus a craft room and storage in the basement.  Because of all of our extra space (we had just come from a five-room apartment), we basically gave the kids the basement including a room just for their toys, but that didn’t mean they kept all of their toys in that room.  It just meant they had three rooms for playing and they used them well, especially when friends would come over.  The first time the kids had a large amount of friends over, the girls claimed a room, the boys claimed a room, and the youngest kids could be found roaming between the three rooms.  Coming from an apartment that had no toy area at all, this home was like a mansion.

Well, that fateful Friday night when I went downstairs to check on the toy situation, it was like a tornado had literally run through the basement.  After giving them 10 minutes to clean up the toys, I ended up finding all of the toys stuffed under a play tent and in closets.  I found toys behind doors.  Toys were shoved into boxes but the boxes were over-spilling.  It was a mess.

So we gave the kids an ultimatum.  The kids could choose to watch the movie for family date night but their toys would go away for a long time or they could keep their toys but no movie that night, maybe we could watch it the following evening.  Well, of course they chose the right-now option and chose movie now, no toys for a long time.  After watching the kids put the toys away more orderly than before, we closed up the doors to the toy room and locked them – including string to remind them it’s off limits.

toys locked up

The kids didn’t ask for the toys for about a week and then I found this:

no toys strengthens family

I asked them about it later and they said they just sat next to the door and looked at the toys but then went back upstairs.

I’ll be honest.  The first day was the hardest … for me!  I don’t think the kids ever thought twice about their toys that were locked up but I worried about it all day to the point I shed a few tears in the afternoon but as more days went by, I realized there were some seriously great gems in having no toys around the house!

no toys helped our family

How no toys strengthened our family:

First, the obvious occurred which is that there are never any toys that needed cleaning up.  Normally before we leave the house, the kids need to clean up the house so we can come home to a clean house.  I also like them to only have a few different toy options out – so if the cars bucket and play kitchen foods & utensils are out and they also want to paint, I like them to clean up the toys first before they start painting.  I know, we run a tight shift around here.  But it helps keep our house clean (stay tuned for a post about that soon).

Second, the children became a lot more artistic.  The kids do a lot of coloring, painting, cutting up papers with scissors, and other crafty things.  The downside to this though is the fact that we’ve been through about a ream of paper in less than a month.

Third, the kids spend a lot more time together and get along almost all of the time.  With the toys, it seemed as though they were fighting constantly over toys (like we didn’t have more than one) and they were getting hurt more than necessary.  Now, I hear and watch them running around the house, giggling and squealing at their new game.  I find them rolling around on the ground together, laughing like crazy.  They just seem happier.

took away kids toys

Fourth, their imagination has expanded.  They are constantly coming up with new games and using the few things around the house they have to create new situations.  There’s a lot more random singing with a lot more made-up words.

Fifth, as I already briefly touched on, there’s less crying!  I am still shocked by this result but it is the best.  The lack of toys has stopped them from fighting so much and they seemingly enjoy their time together more.  And with less crying, there’s less stress for me which means everyone is happier.  There’s less time outs.  There’s less hurt feelings.  And there is just a lot more happiness.

Lastly, and most important in my opinion, our family has been strengthened because I have felt more of a need to spend more quality time together.  Without toys to entertain the kids, it’s just me most of the day.  We read a lot.  We pretend a lot.  We spend time outside on walks and playing at the park.  We exercise more.  We enjoy running errands together.  We visit neighbors more.  And honestly, our family has never been happier.

It was a big deal in the beginning to take away all of the toys, however, I don’t ever want to go back.  I love our cleaner, happier house.

Sweet Amish Bread Recipe (With Flaxseed)

0

My husband has a sweet tooth – something that I can’t even comprehend because if I’m given the option to eat lots of candy and treats or eat anything else available, I’ll almost always choose the something else (I’m a sucker for Lindor chocolates and cheesecake).  I’ll eat pastas, sandwiches, Hot Pockets, plain rice … all before choosing the treats.

So when I found this Sweet Amish Bread recipe many years ago, I found that it’s sort of a win-win situation for my husband and I.  For my husband, he still gets the sugar and for me, well, I get all the carbs.

This bread is amazing for whatever bread thing you need – sandwiches, French toast, regular toast, or a plain slice of bread.  My favorite with it is just a plain old grilled cheese sandwich.

Sweet Amish Bread

Sweet Amish Bread Ingredients

2 cups warm water (110 degrees F, 45 degrees C)
2/3 cup white sugar*
1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
6 cups bread flour**
Flaxseed (optional)

Sweet Amish Bread Instructions

In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water and stir in yeast.  Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam.

With a Kitchen Aid (or similar product) at level 1 or 2, mix salt and oil into the yeast.  Add in flaxseed if desired (I usually pour in about 1/4 cup to help myself feel better about the large amount of sugar I also poured in).  Then mix in flour one cup at a time.  Allow to knead for 5 minutes.  Place in a well-oiled bowl, turn to cover in oil, place a damp cloth over the bowl, and allow to rise until doubled in bulk for about 1 hour.

Once it has risen, punch dough down and divide dough in half.  Shape into loaves and place into two well-oiled 9×5 inch loaf pans.  Allow to rise for 30 minutes or until dough has risen 1 inch above pans.

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 minutes.

Cool on a wire rack.

*With the sugar, you can really add in anything from 1 tablespoon up to 2/3 cup. If I’m making it for a neighbor, I’ll usually reduce the amount of sugar and it still tastes like a great bread. When it’s for my family, unless it’s around the holidays, I’ll always dump in that 2/3 cup of sugar.
**I always use all-purpose flour.
