Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus XTREME – Last Chance

This is a sponsored post. Please refer to our disclosure statement.

Utah Valley Moms had the opportunity to attend the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus XTREME last night on opening night.

I enjoyed the fast pace of the event and I enjoyed the music. My kids were up dancing or bouncing around in their seats almost the entire time. … Or maybe that was me.

In general, I have a pretty low blood pressure level. However, during the circus, guaranteed that for at least 50% of the event, my blood pressure is very high. The tigers are obviously one of the most interesting and terrifying parts but we also really loved the dogs, camels, elephants, and acrobats.

If there is one circus you’re going to see in your life, I’d highly recommend this one!

Ava Anderson Products

Recently we had the opportunity to try some Ava Anderson products. We worked with Rebekah Ritchie who is an independent consultant.

Of these products, Rebekah says:

“We do not share the message of toxic chemicals in products to sell products, we created the products to share the message-Ava Anderson

“What I love about Ava Anderson is her desire to educate. When Ava was 14, she saw a news program about harmful chemicals in personal and home care products and began to look into the products being used in her own home. Much to her surprise, many of the products she and her family were using on a daily basis contained at least 1, if not multiple harmful chemicals that are connected to health issues such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, and infertility to name a few. While Europe bans more then 1,300 harmful chemicals from personal care products and the U.S. only bans 11 allowing manufactures a lot of freedom as to what they put in their products. Even products that are “organic”, “natural”, “pure” often contain these harmful chemicals but consumers don’t realize it- based on the label they think they are getting safe products for their families. Ava Anderson Non Toxic consultants such as myself focus on helping consumers know their backside so they can make the best decision for their families. I would encourage you to look at the products you use and see if any of them contain ingredients from Ava’s Ingredients to Avoid List. If you are interested in ordering products or have any questions, you can contact me through my facebook page at www.facebook.com/fortheloveofmylittle which also includes a link to my shop or through my email [email protected]. The best way to get products into your home is to host an avaHOUR. Not only is hosting free, you earn free products as well as discounted prices for hosting and every month features a new special for our hosts.I am passionate about this message and would love to share it with you.”

These were some of the products that I was able to try below. I have no complaints about them and the kids shampoo/body wash smells so delicious! And sugar body scrubs are always something I can use. Plus it smells so good. It’s nice that all the products are natural or organic. It makes me feel good knowing I’m using good products.

Soldier Hollow Sheepdog Classic Championship Review

0

As part of running the Sheepdog Classic giveaways on our blog, we were also able to attend the Soldier Hollow Sheepdog Classic Championship. It was held at Soldier Hollow this year over Labor Day weekend.

image

image

image

Obviously the best part was the sheepdog championship part. My family and I held her breath as we watch the dogs carefully maneuver the sheep through gates and around trees. It was devastating when a sheep would go the wrong way or at the end when the sheep need to be split into two groups, when one sheep would run away into the wrong group. I took my two little kids and they absolutely loved it.

The other part of the Soldier Hollow classic that we watched a lot of was the splash dogs. The splash dogs had the opportunity to run and jump into a pool of water, trying to gain the most distance. The funniest part about that one was when a dog would run really fast and just before they would jump off the platform, they would get scared and end up not jumping into the water all. We were very impressed with some of the larger dogs who were able to gain so much distance.

There were constantly other activities going on that the kids and I could participate in and there were a lot of great food vendors.

If you are looking for a great activity next year, make sure to put this on the list of places to visit.

Also, just a huge shout out to the Soldier Hollow Sheepdog Classic Championship for putting on a great Labor Day weekend up near Midway.

Family Culture Night

Family Culture Night – Chile

Author: Alyssa Craig

Did you know Chilean Independence Day is coming up on September 18? What better way to celebrate, eat good food, enjoy quality family time, and learn about a different culture than to have a family culture night centered on Chile. Take some time to learn some fun facts about the country, rules of etiquette, and then plan a fun dinner night filled with delicious food and fun games. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

World map with magnified Chile

Fun Facts

When learning about a culture, it is a good idea to know a little bit about the country it comes from. Here are some facts to know about Chile that you can teach your family and guests who come for your cultural night.

Capital: Santiago
Population: Over 17 million as of 2013
Official Language: Spanish
Religion: 89% Roman Catholic (This means many holidays are religiously centered and many of the older generation still celebrate their saint’s day as much as their own birthday.)

Money: Pesos (Fun Fact: One side of each coin has a prominent historical figure. Learn more here.)

Etiquette

Teach your family proper greeting and dining etiquette to implement throughout the night.

Greeting

The manner in which you greet someone depends on your familiarity with them. For formal greetings with someone you do not know well, men shake hands and women pat each other on the right forearm or shoulder. For more informal greetings with someone you are already comfortable with (such as family members and close friends), hugs and kisses on the cheek are acceptable.

It may also be fun to learn a few Spanish greetings for your culture night. Here are some basics based on the time of day:

buenos dias – good morning
buenas tardes – good afternoon
buenas noches – good evening

Dining

  • Wait to be shown to your place when sitting.
  • Women sit before men. Chivalry is not dead.
  • Wait until the hostess invites you to eat before digging into your delicious food.
  • Always use utensils. This is not a time to eat with your hands.
  • Keep wrists at the edge of the table and hands showing at all times. This is when mom’s rule of no elbows on the table definitely applies.
  • Avoid speaking while holding utensils. Set them down before addressing someone or answering a question.
  • It is polite to finish everything on your plate. So make sure you only take as much as you are able and willing to eat.
  • Toast with a “Salud!” but make sure the host makes the first toast!

Chilean cazuela soup served in traditional clay plate

Dining

No culture night is complete without sampling the traditional cuisine of the country. As you assemble your menu for the night, be sure to include some of these delicious entrees and desserts.

  • beef empanadas
  • porotos con riendas: spaghetti and beans
  • corn humitas
  • charquican stew
  • Chilean style stuffed potatoes: filled with beef, chili pepper, raisins, cilantro, olives, hard-boiled eggs
  • bistec a lo pobre: beefsteak, french fries, fried onion, topped with some fried eggs
  • prietas: blood sausages
  • cocada: cookies with crunchy coconut on the outside and soft on the inside
  • alfajor pastry
  • arroz con leche: rice pudding

Activities

Finally, finish out your night in Chile with some fun activities that are enjoyed by our southern friends. Though the two activities below may not be unfamiliar to you, it may surprise your family that these things are very traditional in other countries, as well as our own.

  • Kite Flying: La volantin as the Chileans call it. Chileans make their own kites from balsa wood and tissue paper. For an activity, you can make your own kite too or simply buy one and go kite flying in your local park.

  • Soccer: This should come as no surprise for any South American country. Soccer is incredibly popular from the pickup games in the street to the professional level. Get your family and friends together to play some soccer in honor of Chile.

Experiencing a new culture does not always have to include hours of travel, expensive tickets, and unfamiliar cities. You can put together a fun culture night at home and get a taste for the way others live and what they enjoy in their day to day lives. In doing so, you open up your own world and make room for new family traditions and fun experiences you won’t soon forget.
