UVU Woodbury Museum – Latin America Exhibit

0

I had the great opportunity to visit the Woodbury Art Museum a couple of weeks ago.  I had never been before but was quite impressed that there was a beautiful museum hidden away in University Mall (Orem) on the upper level next to Nordstrom’s.

Their new “Sensing Brazil” and “Dichos: Words to Live, Love and Laugh by in Latin America” is currently open to the public and it is fantastic. It will remain open until November 30, 2011.

Being a person who wants to see the world, but by no means has the funds to support my dream, this was a great opportunity to get a small taste of Brazil and Latin America.

The “Dichos: Words to Live, Love and Laugh by in Latin America” was a fun exhibit.  It included photos of phrases on vehicles with corresponding bumpers next to the pictures with the actual words on them.  It’s very colorful and some of the expressions are really funny.

Saturday, November 5, the museum is hosting a family night!  It will include fun activities for all ages focused on Latin American traditions, including carnival masks, pipe cleaner skeletons, tissue paper flowers, and Romero Britto inspired pop art from 11 am – 2 pm.

click on the picture to take you to their website and turn the baby's frown upside down

Everyday at Timpanogos Regional Hospital, we’ve got front row seats to the miracle of birth. It’s miraculous and inspiring, but it can also be difficult when considering just how many babies are born into families where basic necessities are missing. That’s why, during the month of November, Timpanogos Regional Hospital has teamed up with local agencies to help families in need by providing them with diapers.

Each day that you click on the Diaper Donation Drive button to the right, we’ll donate diapers to agencies that help local families, up to a maximum of 40,000 diapers. With just that small gesture, you can make a huge difference for a local family! Be sure to tell your friends and family, too!

Love For Livi

0

Livi is a beautiful little girl.  On love4livi.blogspot.com, one of the blog authors, Lauren, describes Livi’s situation as this (scroll to the bottom for the fundraiser info):

“I had the privilege of getting to know Julie during the short time she spent in New Jersey. I always admired her and thought she was an incredible person in so many ways. In truth I wished I could be more like her. She has an amazing spirit, and is just a wonderful person to be around. So while Julie and I were never the closest of friends, I know she has friends much closer than me who are probably more qualified to write this… I can’t help but feel drawn to her, and an overwhelming desire to help her in anyway I can. This page has been set up by Julie’s friends to help raise funds for all the many expenses that come along with having a baby with special health needs.

This might be a good time to tell you about Julie’s sweet two year old daughter Olivia. Olivia is just the most beautiful precious little girl you could ever lay eyes on. And unfortunately I’ve only ever been able to do so via pictures! But even through pictures this little angel’s sweet spirit shines through. This is my version, pieced together from Julie’s blogs, of Olivia’s story. So sit back, grab a tissue and read away…

When Olivia was first born she was absolutely beautiful, and breathtaking, and squeaky. She had trouble with eating, rabid breathing, and this adorable, yet troublesome, squeaking. She was diagnosed with Laryngomalacia. It was manageable and would likely resolve on it’s own. It posed some problems, but we managed. After 11 months of RSV, multiple ear infections, and hospital stays they were going to have tubes put in Olivia’s ears. It was at this point someone noticed that something more may be going on with sweet Olivia. This doctor recommended seeing a geneticist. Scary words for any mother to hear. In Julie’s words here is what she found out from the geneticist: “Olivia has a very, very rare chromosomal disorder called 13q Deletion. As I understand it, at her 13th chromosome, there are breakpoints. Within those breakpoints are about 102 genes. That missing material of those genes is what is causing many of her problems. There are learning disabilities and developmental delays in addition to the various health problems. We aren’t sure to what degree this will affect her, although she has already been in various therapies for several months already addressing these issues. Most notable, Olivia is missing the RB1 gene. Because of this specific deletion, Olivia is at an incredibly hi risk of retinoblastoma (eye cancer) bone tumors, and other related tumors. While the 13q deletion syndrome is not fatal, complications from it can be. We are being sent to see special teams in Seattle at an urgent status to start doing these scans. She will have to have these scans every 3 months for several years.”

Not what any mother ever wants to hear. But in May Olivia had her first eye scan and all seemed well. I cheered silently in front of my computer when I read Julie’s update. And then my heart sank this week when I saw postings on Julie’s facebook that things were not well with Olivia. As it turns out, that while Livi was tumor free, just a few short months ago – that is no longer so. She recently took a spill while playing at the pool, that caused some unusual reactions. What appeared at first to be a bump and nothing more soon alarmed Julie that not all was well. Livi’s once blue eye now appeared brown, and a glimpse of white under her left pupil. Alarmed Julie took Livi to the local hospital. Here they never heard of Livi’s condition, assured Julie she’d be fine, and sent her on her way. Could you just imagine the mama bear instinct kicking in here? It must have been heart wrenching to have to wait until Monday to get in to see their specialist in Seattle. And then the day came where they got their answer…. and I can’t imagine ever hearing these words… but Julie’s worries and suspicions were confirmed, Olivia had developed a retinoblastoma. Considering she was tumor free just a few months ago, and now has a sizable eye tumor that was confirmed cancerous is quite alarming. As of now, it appears she will lose her left eye and start chemotherapy. With a two year old daughter of my own, my heart just shatters imagining what it would be like to hear those words about my own daughter. Cancer. Chemotherapy. Removing an eye. It’s just too much for any mother to bear.”

On October 29, a fundraiser will be held in Lindon.

Chevron to Donate Money to Schools

0

When I first read the article, I was bummed that this isn’t going to happen in Utah County for our schools but I’m grateful that Chevron is helping out Utahns at all!

From October 1 through October 31, Chevron and Texaco gas stations will donate $1 to Salt Lake and Davis County schools each time a consumer buys eight gallons of gasoline or more. This is part of their Fuel Your School program, donating up to $500,000 during this time frame.

Participating districts are Canyons, Davis, Granite, Jordan, Murray and Salt Lake, including the charter schools associated with those districts.

For participating gas stations, check out Fuel Your School.

The Future of Downtown Provo

0

I’ve always loved Downtown Provo. I love that it’s old and rundown and when I first moved down to Provo from Salt Lake, I loved that old feel with no new buildings interfering. Since I’ve been here, a few new buildings have been built around Center Street and I’ve been sad to see it change.

Apparently, they’re changing Provo a lot more than I expected but by the drawing, it looks like Provo will look amazing when they’re finished. There is a workshop tonight in Provo about the upcoming changes. Join them or at least take the survey.

Willy, the Wolverine, Corn Maze

A giant corn maze of Utah Valley University mascot Willy the Wolverine will be visible from high in the air and explored by many on the ground on Sept. 2 as Payson and Elk Ridge residents combine with UVU alumni to celebrate UVU Day in kicking off the communities’ Onion Days.

Willy the Wolverine, UVU cheerleaders, multicultural dancers, an airplane display and an alumni booth where UVU alumni can sign up for free alumni cards are a few of the activities scheduled for the festivities on Sept. 2 beginning at 5 p.m. The first 100 people to arrive will receive a UVU Willy the Wolverine backpack full of free giveaways and those who sign up for a UVU alumni card will be entered into a prize drawing.

“We are very excited to celebrate UVU Day with Payson and Elk Ridge and to participate in Onion Days festivities,” said Carol Walker, UVU community alumni program manager. “These communities have been incredible to work with, and we encourage UVU alumni to come out to the fun activities.”

Payson Mayor Rick Moore and Elk Ridge Mayor Ed Christensen will join UVU officials and Willy the Wolverine to kick off the event. A portion of the funds raised from the corn maze will go to a UVU scholarship for a Payson or Elk Ridge resident in order to give back to the community.

“UVU is excited to connect with residents and alumni in Payson and Elk Ridge while helping celebrate this community’s long-standing Onion Days festival,” Walker said.

The corn maze, a first in south Utah County that will be open through Halloween, will take participants through the UVU letters and then through the head of Willy the Wolverine

“Payson mapped the design for the corn maze and farmers Guy and Greg Larsen planted the corn,” said Walker. “Two weeks after the corn grew out of the ground, the GPS coordinates were used by Mayor Moore to plow it into the UVU design.”

The maze will be open from Sept. 2 through Oct. 31 on Monday, Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $5 per person or $4 with a UVU identification or alumni card. Admission is also $4 per person for groups of 10 or more. Parking is free and there will be a concession stand with hot dogs, drinks and other goodies at the corn maze. To get there, take the south Payson exit (Exit 248) from Interstate 15 and head west. Directional signs will be posted along the way.
