It’s that time of year again when hundreds of women head to Provo for BYU’s annual Education Week.  The following press release will explain what it is, when it is, and how you can be involved.

Annual BYU Campus Education Week to run August 1822

Elder David A. Bednar to give Devotional address on Tuesday, August 19

Thursday, July 17, 2014

PROVO, Utah

BYU’s Campus Education Week, one of the largest continuing education programs in the country, will be held August 1822, 2014, at the university’s campus in Provo, Utah. Based on the theme, “Seek Learning, Even by Study and Also by Faith” (Doctrine and Covenants 88:118), Education Week will feature more than 1,000 classes taught by more than 200 presenters, teaching on a wide variety of topics. The Tuesday Devotional address will be given by Elder David A. Bednar, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The schedule, registration and all the details for BYU Campus Education Week can be found at educationweek.byu.edu.

“We are confident that those who attend the program, which is designed for both women and men, single or married and youth ages 14 and older, will benefit from the resources and atmosphere of Brigham Young University,” said H. Bruce Payne, Campus Education Week program administrator. “Attendees will have a rewarding, uplifting and motivating experience attending classes taught by skilled presenters on a great variety of subjects from gospel principles to the arts, family and marriage relationships to finance, self-improvement, technology and more.”

Classes
Campus Education Week classes are taught by faculty from Brigham Young University, instructors from Seminaries and Institutes of Religion of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other experts in their field. The week will feature classes that address topics such as education, family and marriage relations, finance, health, religion and self-improvement.

Devotional
A highlight of the program is the campus Devotional on Tuesday morning. This year, Elder David A. Bednar, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be the featured speaker at the Devotional on Tuesday, August 19, at 11:10 a.m., in the Marriott Center. The devotional is free and open to the public. The devotional will be broadcast live on BYUTV, and archived on BYUtv.org and speeches.byu.edu.

Classes and Activities for Youth
During the week, more than 80 classes are offered specifically for youth ages 14-18. On Thursday evening, teens participating in Education Week can attend a youth dance (admission: $5, paid in advance).

Registration
There are a variety of registration options including: full week, just Tuesday through Friday, just mornings, just afternoons, just evenings, just one day of the week and more. Sign up online (http://ce.byu.edu/edweek/register.php), over the phone (877-221-6716) or in person at the Harman Continuing Education Building at BYU. At-the-door registration is available during the program.

Continuing Legal Education Credit
Several classes in the Education Week schedule are eligible for continuing legal education credit. While primarily designed for attorneys, any registered participant may attend. In addition to the Campus Education Week tuition, attorneys seeking Continuing Legal Education credit are required to pay a $35 fee for the week. Participants should check with their respective state bars for verification that the classes will be accepted as CLE credit.

Evening Performances
Spend Education Week evenings with the arts. Each night, from Tuesday through Friday, three different productions will be presented at the Harris Fine Arts Center at BYU.

Tickets are $12 for each performance and are on sale now at the BYU Ticket Office at 801-422-2981 or online at byutickets.com. Registration for Education Week is not required to purchase tickets for these performances.

• Seven Brides for Seven Brothers – “Goin’ courtin” has never been as much fun as in this rip-roaring stage version of the popular MGM movie. Set in the Oregon wilderness in the 1850s, Seven Brides tells the story of Millie, a young bride who plans to civilize and marry off her six rowdy brothers-in-law to ensure the success of her own marriage. Bursting with rambunctious energy and some of the best dancing scenes in musical theatre, Seven Brides is a fun romance that will take you back to the glory days of the movie musical.

• An Evening of Music and Inspiration – Be entertained and inspired with a concert featuring favorite LDS performing artists including Peter Breinholt, Cherie Call, Daniel Beck, Jessie Clark Funk and Sam Payne. Relax and enjoy the beautiful vocals and amazing instrumentals of this talented ensemble.

• William Joseph in Concert – Captivating pianist and composer William Joseph is known for the passion and virtuosity of his performances. In 2003, collaboration with music icon David Foster fueled William’s promising career and resulted in his first two albums, Beyond and Within, on the Warner Bros. label. William’s brilliance has led to tours with well-known stars Josh Groben and Il Divo and opened the door for special appearances with world-class artists such as John Mayer, Natalie Cole, Barbra Streisand, Kenny G, Alecia Keys, Beyoncé and Michael Bublé.

Volunteers Needed
Get a complimentary Monday through Friday registration when you volunteer to serve as hosting staff (http://ce.byu.edu/edweek/volunteer.php) during Campus Education Week. Volunteers serve a three hour and 45 minute shift each day from Tuesday to Friday, in an assigned room and building.

More information about Education Week, including class schedules, registration and fees, housing, parking and shuttles is available at educationweek.byu.edu or 801-422-6214.

Helpful Tips for Selling Items Online

0

Author: Whitney Hollingshead

Selling items online can be a great way to get rid of unnecessary stuff and earn some extra cash. The tips below will help you get the most out of your selling experience and keep you safe in the process:

1. Create an email address to use just for selling items online. The more generic this email address is, the better; however, make sure you keep the address professional. For example, [email protected] is not a professional email address.

2. Look at posts of similar items being sold by others on KSL and Craigslist. Consider how you can make your item stand out. Scoping out the competition will help you find a way to win the sale.

3. Get your item ready in the best shape possible. Sure, it may take you a little bit of time to clean or fix a few things, but these improvements can earn you a bigger payoff in the end. For example, if you are selling a wedding dress, make sure the dress has been cleaned.

4. Write a creative and honest description of your item. Keep the description brief, but provide more than basic information. Think about the questions you would ask someone when purchasing a similar item and include answers to those questions in your description. Figure out a catchy, yet professional way to grab a potential buyer’s attention, but make sure you are honest in all statements. If the item has flaws, is missing parts, or shows the signs of wear and tear, include these factors in your post.

5. Always post pictures and do your best to post a variety of really good pictures. If you are snapping pictures in your home, make sure the area visible in the photo is neat and tidy. Do not give away any clues to your location. In other words, don’t take a picture next to your mailbox with the address printed on the side. Do not post pictures of your children or your pets. If you use pictures of the item found online instead of posting your own photos, make sure you clearly state this in your post.

6. Do some research on pricing. When possible, find out how much the brand new version of your item is currently selling for online. Mention this number in your post as a comparison. Use the pricing of other similar items online to help you set the price. Try to set your price at least 10% higher than the amount you are hoping to make. Buyers will attempt to bargain with you so you want to have some room to bargain. Make sure you determine your rock bottom price before posting any information online and keep this number to yourself.

7. Post your item on more than one site, but make sure to post on the local page for each site. If out of state buyers find your item online you may receive a lot of extra attention that will not translate to an actual sale.

8. Choose a meeting place that is in a public area. If you do not have your own business, ask a friend or family member who owns a business if you can use their location as a place to meet with potential buyers. Do not meet in the parking lot. Rather, choose a safe public location indoors. This may prove challenging if you are selling furniture or larger items. If you cannot find any alternative to having the buyer come to your home or storage unit, arrange for a group of adults you trust to be at the meeting with you. Never transact a sale with a child visible to the buyer.

9. Make sure the financial terms are agreed upon before you meet with a prospective buyer. You should consider a cash only transaction. If the buyer writes you a check that doesn’t clear the bank, you may have a hard time getting the bounced check resolved. Do not give the buyer access to the item until you have received the payment in full.

10. Follow your gut. As you are contacted by potential buyers be wary of anything that seems fishy. Serious buyers will ask serious questions. Don’t waste your time responding to general inquiries. For example, serious buyers should include the name of the item instead of generic phrases like, “Is it still available?”. If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable, don’t talk yourself into continuing the transaction. No amount of money is worth your safety and peace of mind.

Bonus Tip: Posting rental properties on KSL and Craigslist is becoming very popular. If you are planning on posting rental properties online, make sure you have additional security measures in place. Ask for references, contact the references provided, and ask a lot of questions. Have an attorney examine your rental contract. You will also want to put extra effort into making your property stand out in a good way. Here are some additional tips to help you in preparing your rental.

By following these 10 tips above, you can successfully and safely sell your items via an online marketplace.
